19THC BRACKET CLOCK - RAILWAY INTEREST, HIGHLAND RAILWAY a late 19thc bracket clock, presented to David Jones of the Highland Railway in 1896. An ebonised bracket clock with a 5 1/2" silvered chapter ring, beneath a subsidiery fast/slow dial. With pierced spandrels on a brass 8 day twin train movement, striking half hourly and on two gongs. With gilt metal mounts and paw feet. With a an inscribed brass plaque, 'Presented to David Jones Esq Locomotive Engineer, by the Employees of the Locomotive Carriage Wagon Departments, Highland Railway, 31st October 1896. 17ins (43cms) high *David Jones (1834-1906) was born in Manchester where his father was an engineer. He became Locomotive Superintendent for the Highland Railway in Scotland, and was credited with the design of the first British 4-6-0, an arrangement that had it's origins in the United States. 15 of the Jones Goods Class Locomotives were built, and one survived and is now housed at the Riverside Museum In Glasgow. He retired in 1896 after a scalding experienced during tests, which robbed him of use of his left leg. This clock was obviously given to him on his retirement by the employees, as a mark of respect for his time served with them.

IllustratedThe original model from the workshop of André-Charles Boulle and his sons is after a design by Jean Bérain and Gilles-Marie Oppenordt.The reference to the 1893 sale on the paper label on the reverse is most likely that of a similar, though smaller, one bought shortly after the French Revolution by George Capel-Conigsby, 5th Earl of Essex (d. 1839) and sold at Christie's in 1893. A pair with its matching clock sold Sothebys, London 29th June 2005, lot 234,COMPARATIVE LITERATURE:Hans Ottomeyer & Peter Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Vol. II, Munich, 1896, p. 48, fig. 1.5.2, illustrates the original model for this barometer by Boulle with the dial signed Ciceri and Toricelli, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (Jones Collection 1122-1882). IllustratedCharles Goode is recorded as working in the Strand. He was admitted to the Clockmakers' Company in 1686 and died in 1730.The appearance of the cypher CW or CWP on work by Goode has been debated over the last thirty years with a number of opinions offered.

IllustratedJohn Dwerrihouse had premises in Charles Street, which leads off Berkeley Street. He was admitted to the Clockmakers' Company in 1781. He entered into partnership with Carter around 1802.

IllustratedJohn Marshall's love of clockmaking began in the early 1960s. Recalling the Golden age of clockmaking, he crafted a number of clocks and won a silver medal from the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1994. Working in the traditional manner, he crafted every component, bar the main springs. He was a cabinet-maker and worked at Arthur Brett's in Norwich.
