GC, the hilt retaining a little gilt (blade some wear).

GWO & generally GC, retaining some original finish overall (one stock has been fractured and badly repaired); in their English brass bound leather covered fitted oak case, the lid with panel bearing owner’s name, containing pair of snap caps, cleaning rod and brushes, with carrying handle and leather securing straps. Basically GC (sound but worn, no key)

A French Army cadet’s unique gladius style sword of the Ecole de Mars, 1794, DE shallow diamond section blade 21”, heavy cast brass hilt with panelled crossguard and langets, bearing cap of liberty, downward projecting steel arms and single upward knucklebow, “feathered” grip, plain pommel, in its brown fabric panelled brass scabbard with opposed hanging rings and large ornamental chape. GC (worn patches to scabbard fabric, large edge nick to cleaned blade). Plate 9 Note: This sword was designed by the artist Jaques Louis David for cadets of the short lived military academy, L’Ecole de Mars, founded on 1st June 1794 and then dissolved at the end of October the same year owing to the political unrest generated by its students.
