An Indian 12 bore matchlock gun, torador, 70” overall, barrel 49” with thick tapered breech incorporating integral rearsight and pan with hinged cover, flared muzzle, and faint traces of decoration over its entire length; fullstocked, the plain fore end retained by two brass barrel bands (probably later replacements), the breech stop and butt end of dark wood inlaid with rosettes, circles and lozenges surrounded by borders of pellets; the action enclosed by steel plates retained by domed brass rivet heads. An Austrian cavalry trooper’s sword, d 1855, slightly curved, fullered blade 33½”, stamped with Austrian eagle, 1855, W/AD on one side at forte and maker’s name E S Jung on the other, brass reinforce into steel semi bowl guard with reinforced edges and pierced with 4 holes (right) and 3 holes (left) at forte, grooved cap shaped pommel, and backstrap with ears, ribbed leather grip, in its steel scabbard with 2 rings. GC (some dark rust/pitting to hilt and scabbard) an untouched example worthy of careful cleaning. Plate 9

A post 1902 RN officer’s sword, straight fullered blade 32”, etched with R Arms on one side and crowned fouled anchor on the other, in scrolls, regulation semi basket hilt incorporating crowned fouled anchor, and with turn down inner portion which locks to scabbard, lion’s head pommel and backstrap, wirebound sharkskin grip, with gilt knot in its brass mounted leather scabbard with 2 rings. GC, the hilt retaining a little gilt (blade some wear).
*A pair of Belgian DB 12 bore x 2½” top lever hammerless sidelock non ejector sporting guns, number 77715, 46” overall, barrels 30”, and number 77727, 44½” overall, barrels 28½”, with matted top ribs and doll’s head extensions, Liege and B’ham nitro proofs, with automatic top safeties, the locks engraved with rural scene of game dogs and rabbits, the frames engraved with simple scrolls and dog’s head, the walnut stocks with chequered fore ends and pistol grips, the barrels with leather covered hand grips. GWO & generally GC, retaining some original finish overall (one stock has been fractured and badly repaired); in their English brass bound leather covered fitted oak case, the lid with panel bearing owner’s name, containing pair of snap caps, cleaning rod and brushes, with carrying handle and leather securing straps. Basically GC (sound but worn, no key)

A well executed miniature oval oil painting of Napoleon, in full dress, seated in an armchair and talking to 2 standing aides, evidently as a prisoner on Elba or St Helena, 2½” x 3¼”, sealed in a rectangular tortoiseshell frame, 4½” x 5½”, with brass studs around the edges, and engraved flowers in the corners. A French Army cadet’s unique gladius style sword of the Ecole de Mars, 1794, DE shallow diamond section blade 21”, heavy cast brass hilt with panelled crossguard and langets, bearing cap of liberty, downward projecting steel arms and single upward knucklebow, “feathered” grip, plain pommel, in its brown fabric panelled brass scabbard with opposed hanging rings and large ornamental chape. GC (worn patches to scabbard fabric, large edge nick to cleaned blade). Plate 9 Note: This sword was designed by the artist Jaques Louis David for cadets of the short lived military academy, L’Ecole de Mars, founded on 1st June 1794 and then dissolved at the end of October the same year owing to the political unrest generated by its students.

A late 18th century continental cavalry trooper’s sword, curved shallow fullered blade 33”, heavy steel stirrup hilt, large quillon and slender langets to slotted crossguard with small stamp “B11” (? unclear) underneath, plain knucklebow, very slightly forward sloping cap shaped pommel and plain backstrap, brass wirebound grip (AF at top), in scabbard with single ring (throat mount missing). A good quality 10 bore late percussion export musket, by I Hollis & Sons, London (1861-1900), 52” overall, barrel 36” with 2 leaf folding rearsight and faint traces of ordnance inspector’s marks, the signed Enfield pattern lock bearing circular “IHS” logo surrounded by “Makers to Her Majesty’s War Department”, the pale walnut fullstock extending to the muzzle, the butt with cheekpiece and stamped “I Hollis & Sons, Gun Makers, London & Birmingham”, with brass military style mounts and muzzle band with integral fore sight. A small quantity of Third Reich and other items, including a relic SS dagger blade with traces of rare Himmler honour inscription (appears to have been in a fire and has scale and some deep pitting), together with an engraved brass plaque in similar condition with German inscription to SS Gruppenfuhrer Rediess, and bearing facsimile Himmler signature, which presumably relates to the dagger blade, 2 reels of coloured cotton with original paper wrappers and RZM/SS paper labels; a sports vest with large printed cloth eagle badge (very worn); 3 Elastolin SS figures and 3 others; an officers brown leather belt with beaded rectangular grey metal buckle, dated 1939; 2 soldiers leather belts lacking buckles (worn, one cut down); a leather map case, and a brass paper knife with runic symbols; also an Italian brass ring with bust of Mussolini; an Italian painted metal sew on shield badge to “X Flottiglia Mas”; 2 Italian War medals (1 AF); a WWI brass trench art brass cap with Canadian badge; 5 volumes of “Deeds that thrill the Empire” and several other small items. A similar sword, plated blade 32”, by Alcoso, Solingen, the lacquered brass hilt embossed with oak leaves and with lion’s head pommel having red glass eyes, one langet having eagle with outspread wings, the other with vacant oval cartouche, wire bound black plastic covered grip and leather portepee with silver and green acorn, in its black painted scabbard.
