Co.., Fleet Str., London, 191mm x 114mm, corners pierced for attachment, very fineThis stall plate was produced between 1826 and 1838, during which time Hughes copper and steel plate makers was headquartered at Peterborough Court, Fleet Street.Edward Lowther Crofton was born on 24 November 1783, likely in County Roscommon, Ireland, the son of John Frederick Lowther Crofton and the grandson of Anglo-Irish politician Sir Marcus Lowther Crofton, 1st Baronet. Crofton embarked on a career in the Royal Navy, with whom he was commissioned Lieutenant in March 1804, Commander in February 1805 and was promoted Post Captain on 4 March 1811.Crofton was active during the War of 1812 and served as Post Captain in the Naval Brigade of Rear-Admiral Sir George Cockburn during the Battle of Baltimore in September 1814. Following the British burning of the enemy capital at Washington D.C., they returned to their ships and travelled up river towards Baltimore, Maryland and proceeded to bombard the harbour's Fort McHenry in an attempt to take the city. The fort was well-defended and stood up to the 25-hour bombardment after which the British fleet departed. The conflict notably inspired the American national anthem.Crofton's conduct during the engagement was praised by the Rear-Admiral in his public letter, in which he stated: '...the brigade of seamen with small arms, commanded by Captain Edward Crofton, assisted by Captains Sulivan, Money, and Ramsay, who commanded divisions under him, behaved with a gallantry and steadiness which would have done honour to the ablest troops, and which attracted the admiration of the army.'A year after the battle, Crofton was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath in June 1815. The following year he married Mary Leader on 23 April 1816 and the couple went on to have issue of at least one son and one daughter, who was born at Putney Hill in Surrey on 10 September 1818. Their son, also named Edward Lowther Crofton, was a Captain in the 77th Regiment of Foot who died of cholera in the Crimea on 27 September 1854 during the march from Alma to Balaclava.Crofton died just a few years after his award of the C.B. in September 1818; sold together with copied research. …

89cm curved blade retaining some original polish, some slight staining, British Liege inspector’s Acceptance stamp over S & K (Schnitzler & Kirschbaum) maker’s stamp, double broad arrow "Sold out of Stores" stamp on blade, the back edge stamped with Prussian Crown over FW over 50 (Friedrich Wilhelm IV, King of Prussia, issued 1850), contained in its heavy steel scabbard. This sword was originally produced as an experimental one and issued to only about one squadron of the Prussian Guard Hussar Regt, perhaps only about 160 or less of these swords were made. It was rejected, and sold to Britain as an emergency weapon for the Crimean War. 13inch tapering multi-stage barrel bearing proof marks and maker's stamp to the breech and the rack number T18, bevelled lock, full stock, teardrop carved about the tang, brass butt cap, later brass trigger guard, wooden ramrod. 20inch sighted barrel fitted with ramp and ladder rear sights, various Ordnance and Sold out of Service marks to the breech, the sliding receiver with hinged handle stamped with the serial no. 702, border engraved lock stamped 1860 over TOWER and with a crowned VR at the tail, full stocked with PIMLICO WD stamp to the right side, the sideplate area stamped W. BAGGS and fitted with a saddle bar, regulation steel mounts, the short butt plate tang stamped CMR 223. Originally issued to the 18th Hussars this carbine appears to have been issued to the Cape Mounted Rifles. See Roads The British Soldier's Firearm 1850-1864 pages 283-285. Cleaning rod lacking, some pitting to the barrel.

Her works are known for their distinct art deco style; the designs were modern yet functional, using high-quality woods and detailed joinery; examples can be found in the V&A and Geffrye museums in London. Her great-nephew Clive Stewart-Lockhart has published, this year (2025), a new biography on Joel to mark the 40th year of her passing - showcasing her design, vision and ever-lasting impact on British furniture design.

A pair Chinese red lacquered and gilt leather Trunks, of rectangular form and applied with tooled leather bats and shou symbols, the hinged top enclosed a lined interior with makers stamp, with carrying handles to either side, W 79 cm x H 33 cm x D 52 cm. Provenance; Vendors Parents worked for the British Embassy between 1938-42 during the war between China and Japan (Second Sino-Japanese War), these trunks were purchased as a set of four during this period, whilst feeling China their possessions were seized by the Japanese military, they were then returned approximately four years later.
