BARBARA HEPWORTH (1903-1975)The Aegean Suite The complete set of nine lithographs printed in colours, 1971, on wove paper, each signed and numbered 30/60 in pencil, printed by Curwen Studio, with their blindstamp, published by Marlborough Fine Art, London, the full sheets, with pale time and light-staining, the colours slightly attenuated but still good, in overall good condition, framedSheets 810 x 585mm. (31 7/8 x 23in.) (9)Footnotes:ProvenanceChristie's Contemporary Art, London, June 1976. Acquired directly from the above, thence by descent to the present owner. The Aegean Suite is one of only two major sets of lithographs completed by Barbara Hepworth during her lifetime. Although her graphic output was limited, she enjoyed printmaking as the intricacy of its layering process would allow her to develop ideas on space, abstraction, form and texture that she would later translate into her sculpture. Hepworth had started work on the suite in 1970 in St Ives, Cornwall, and completed it with master printer Stanley Jones at the Curwen Studio in London the following year. The apparent ease with which she combines the drawn line and the lithographic wash is a testament to her skills and dedication to the medium. The title and geometric forms choreographed across all nine works of the present set also convey the artist's fascination with the sites of antique Greece, while the abstracted suns and moons are reminiscent of her interest in the celestial; a theme she keenly explored in her graphic oeuvre. This complete set with all nine works presented in their original frames was purchased from Christie's Contemporary Art exhibition in June 1976 and are offered alongside the Christie's original Certificates of Authenticity, a brochure printed in colours about the prints, a typed letter by David Case introducing the June 1976 collection and the exhibition pricelists. The 1976 exhibition focused on Barbara Hepworth who had died the year before, presenting her alongside other contemporary printmakers, notably Julian Trevelyan and Dorothea Wight. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1949 Humber Super Snipe MkIICoachwork by Coachwork by TickfordRegistration no. GAK 687Chassis no. 8801844Odometer reading: TBCMOT: N/A*Rare survivor of Humber's top-of-the-range model*One of only 44 built*Restored in the early 2000sAlready the majority shareholder in the combined Hillman/Humber concern, Rootes completed its takeover in 1931. Under Rootes' guidance, Hillman concentrated on models with mass-market appeal while Humber was pitched at a wealthier clientele. The Super Snipe first appeared in the late 1930s, finding a ready market within the ranks of Civil Service officialdom and the middle class professions, and continued in mildly face-lifted form post-WW2. In 1948 the Super Snipe underwent a more extensive revision, emerging as the longer and wider MkII, though still with the 4.1-litre six-cylinder sidevalve engine producing 100bhp. Styled with the assistance of Raymond Loewy's design studio, the MkII featured a new front end, while, perhaps surprisingly, running boards were reinstated. A touring limousine and a drophead coupé were available alongside the standard four-door saloon. The car offered here is one of only 44 drophead coupés built on the Super Snipe MkII chassis, of which only seven (not all in roadworthy condition) are known to survive. The 36th of the series, 'GAK 687' was delivered new to J C France & Co of Dewsbury on 18th November 1949. The Humber was restored to its present condition in the early 2000s and acquired by the current owner from Justin Banks in June 2004. 'GAK 687' comes with a history file containing copies of numerous invoices for parts used in its restoration; four MoTs (most recent expired 2005); an old-style V5C Registration Certificate; and an original Tickford brochure. The Humberhas been on static display for a number of years and as such will require recommissioning prior to road use. 1930 Bentley 4½-Litre Vanden Plas-style TourerRegistration no. GC 7379Chassis no. PB 3544•Originally a saloon by Harrison•Present ownership since 1987•Carefully stored for the last 25 years•Requires re-commissioningFootnotes:W O Bentley proudly displayed the new 3-litre car bearing his name on Stand 126 at the 1919 Olympia Motor Exhibition, the prototype engine having fired up for the first time just a few weeks earlier. In only mildly developed form, this was the model which was to become a legend in motor racing history and which, with its leather-strapped bonnet, classical radiator design and British Racing Green livery has become the archetypal vintage sports car. Early success in the 1922 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, when Bentleys finished second, fourth and fifth to take the Team Prize, led to the introduction of the TT Replica (later known as the Speed Model). However, by the middle of the decade the 3-Litre's competitiveness was on the wane and this, together with the fact that too many customers had been tempted to fit unsuitably heavy coachwork to the excellent 3-Litre chassis rather than accept the expense and complexity of Bentley's 6½-Litre 'Silent Six', led to the introduction of the '4½'. The new 4½-Litre model effectively employed the chassis, transmission and brakes of the 3-Litre, combined with an engine that was in essence two-thirds of the six-cylinder 6½-litre unit. Thus the new four-cylinder motor retained the six's 100x140mm bore/stroke and Bentley's familiar four-valves-per-cylinder fixed-'head architecture, but reverted to the front-end vertical camshaft drive of the 3-Litre. Bentley Motors lost no time in race-proving its new car. It is believed that the first prototype engine went into the 3-Litre chassis of the 1927 Le Mans practice car. Subsequently this same engine was fitted to the first production 4½-Litre chassis for that year's Grand Prix d'Endurance at the Sarthe circuit. The original 4½-Litre car, nicknamed by the team 'Old Mother Gun' and driven by Frank Clement and Leslie Callingham, promptly set the fastest race lap of 73.41mph before being eliminated in the infamous 'White House Crash' multiple pile-up. The 4½-Litre was produced for four years, all but ten of the 667 cars being built on the 3-Litre's 'Long Standard', 10' 10'-wheelbase chassis. Purchasers of the 4½-Litre model were, in common with those of all Vintage-period Bentleys, free to specify their preferences from a very considerable range of mechanical and electrical equipment, in addition to whatever body style and coachbuilder might be required. This 4½-Litre Bentley is one of the 657 built on the long (10' 10') chassis and originally carried saloon coachwork by R Harrison & Son of Stanhope Street, London NW1, a relative stone's throw from Bentley's factory in Cricklewood. Its first owner was one E B Graham and the Bentley retains its original registration, 'GC 7379'. At an unknown date, the original body was removed and a Vanden Plas-style tourer body fitted.'GC 7379' was purchased by the vendor's deceased husband in 1987 (carbon-copy purchase invoice on file). The history file's contents show that various works were undertaken thereafter, including replacing the wheel hubs, rebuilding the wheels, and other mechanical refurbishment as detailed in sundry invoices. Its late owner used the Bentley to attend shows and rallies, and drove the car as often as he could; indeed, he attempted to use all his cars at least once a month. The vendor's husband died in 1996, and his collection of cars remained mostly unused thereafter. This car, together with others from the same vendor, has been standing for up to 25 years and like the others, was running and usable when laid-up. They were all stored in a purpose-built, heated and dehumidified building, which the deceased gentleman had commissioned solely for the purpose of housing his cars. Having been standing for that period of time, they will require careful re-commissioning and safety checks prior to use by a new owner. Presently on SORN, the Bentley is equipped with a full hood, hood cover, and tonneau cover. Accompanying documentation includes a current V5C; a copy old V5; a quantity of expired MoT certificates; some photographs; an original Bentley 4½-Litre sales brochure; miscellaneous papers; and the aforementioned assorted invoices, etc. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
