ROBERT CLATWORTHY R.A. [1928-2015]. Cat, 1955. bronze, edition of 8, 8/8; signed RC. 48 cm long. Provenance: The artist; ; private collection, UK; private collection, Canada. Literature: 'Robert Clatworthy', 2012, Sansom, p. 94, pl. RC32. The Royal Academy of Art's collection includes this sculpture - one of Clatworthy's best Cats. Clatworthy is one of the UK's finest sculptors [often associated with the 'Geometry of Fear' group] who also painted - he was a Henry Moore assistant in the early 1950s whilst studying at the Chelsea and Slade Schools of Art. He was snapped up when still at the Slade by the Hanover Gallery [one of Europe's greatest galleries] and often exhibited there alongside Francis Bacon, Picasso and Giacometti. In 1964 he moved to the Waddington Galleries and held a very successful one man exhibition in 1965.. He became one of the youngest [at the time] Royal Academicians in 1968 [ARA] at the age of 40. Museum collections include the Tate Gallery, Arts Council, Royal Academy and V&A. A book on his work, including a catalogue raisonne of the sculpture was published by Sansom in 2012. Note: In 1954 the director of the Hanover Gallery, Erica Brausen, could have chosen to represent Frink [she studied with Clatworthy], but considered Clatworthy far more talented, which of course he was.. In the 1950s, the great art criric David Sylvester described Clatworthy as the best young British sculptor since Henry Moore.[very good condition - a bit of dust in the crevices]. Buyers premium of 20% + VAT is payable. ARR 4%.
Sir JACOB EPSTEIN [1880-1959]. Sir Muirhead Bone, 1916. bronze, edition of 6 [an early cast and most likely cast in 1916]. 26 cm high - excluding the wood base. Provenance: Leicester Galleries, c. 1917; M. Paez-Vilano collection, USA; Sothebys auction, New York, 3 June 1970, lot 90; private collection, USA; Roy Davids collection [£12000]; private collection, UK. Literature: 'The Sculpture of Epstein', E. Silber, 1986, Phaidon, catalogue raisonne, p. 40, no. 75 [Silber records this as cast no.4 - she only records 4 casts - so the final 2 may never have been cast]; 'Jacob Epstein - Adventures of the Soul', Dr Justine Hopkins, 2018, plate 3 [this cast illustrated]. Sir Muirhead Bone [1876-1953] was a celebrated UK artist who became the first official war artist in 1916 during WW1 and Epstein modelled this head of his friend shortly afterwards. Bone was an Imperial War Museum [IWM] trustee and helped establish it in 1917. He was also a trustee of the Tate and National Galleries. Neither the IWM nor National Portrait Gallery own a cast of Bone - quite surprising? Jacob Epstein is one of the greatest sculptors of all time - any artist who created 'Rock Drill' in 1913, could pretty much live on that acclaim for the rest of their lives, but he went on to create many great sculptures - his modelled bronze heads and busts are unsurpassed.. Two of his contemporaries, Frank Dobson and Eric Gill, are currently rated more highly even though they are inferior sculptors. Eric Gill [1882-1940] was a good craftsman, but a repulsive human being - a paedophile etc. - if he had been a musician, actor or writer, many people these days would want him erased from the history - but because he was a visual artist he is celebrated far beyond his artistic merits - why? [see Fiona MacCarthy's 'Eric Gill' biography for the full horrific details - all covered up during his lifetime, as he was 'religious' - where have we heard that before?].. [very good condition - the wood base has some marks and slight chips and supports to tilt the head upwards]. Buyers premium 20% + VAT - ARR 4%
CESAR [Cesar Baldaccini] [1921-98]. Nude [Femme Nue Debout], 1947. bronze, edition of 8, 7/8 [there was no original iron version of this, it was cast by the artist from his original plaster sculpture]. signed. 45 cm high. Provenance: Private collection, France; Artcurial auction, Paris, 22 March 2011, lot 372; private collection, UK. Literature: 'Cesar', catalogue raisonne, Durand-Ruel, p. 25 - one of Cesar's earliest sculptures - this is the only cast we have ever seen appear in auction. Cesar is the greatest modern sculptor, in our opinion, surpassing even Giacometti - his larger bronzes can sell for £millions.[very good condition - some dust in crevices - a few oxidation spots, as expected]. Buyers premium of 20% + VAT is payable. ARR 4%.

A large Chinese polished bronze censer, six character Xuande mark, with loop handles and three tapering stile feet, on a carved wood stand, height 23cm, diameter 28cm.From the Estates of June Barrington Ward & Maggie Cameron Fraser‘Two Remarkable Ladies’June Barrington-Ward 1922-2002& Maggie Cameron Fraser 1923-2021 For several decades, two remarkable ladies lived contentedly in the remote farmhouse near Lanreath in Cornwall that they had restored and shared since the 1970s.June Barrington-Ward was a sculptor. She trained at Chelsea School of Art and exhibited widely during the 1960s & 70s. Her work featured in group shows in prestigious galleries and locations like the Royal Academy alongside artists such as Denis Mitchell, John Milne & Kim Lim. June was the daughter of Lancelot Barrington-Ward KCVO, a royal surgeon to King George VI and his family. He also played rugby for England. Her grandfather was the vicar of Duloe in Cornwall. Although her work was applauded by contemporary critics, she never pursued recognition. In the words of a family member “she didn’t seek fame and I believe she was simply happy to be left alone to make things.”Maggie Cameron Fraser was an academic who specialised in antique glass, a subject on which she wrote extensively and lectured at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Some of the very fine pieces in this sale were part of her treasured collection. They met during the Second World War. June, in the WRNS, drove ambulances in London and Maggie worked at Bletchley Park. For many years they shared a large property in Chiswick with a studio, until making the move to Cornwall.Maggie bought their magical house in North East Cornwall from the Carlyon Family in 1978. After renovating their home, they settled happily into retirement, Maggie astutely playing the stock market and June continuing to create sculpture. June died in 2002 and Maggie followed her last year. The home they left, and their wonderful collection of art and antiques, stand as a celebration and testament to their happy life together.Condition report: There are two dents to the side of the censer, a couple of blemishes caused by the forging of the piece, and two of the legs on the stand have been repaired. Extra photos have been uploaded to our website. The censor weighs 5.45kg, the stand weighs 0.8kg, with a combined weight of 6.25kg
