Mounted on Connemara marble, raised on mahogany plinth. The large original sculpture, which commemorates the 1916 Rising, is located in the G.P.O., Dublin. 6 x 5 x 5in. (15.24 x 12.70 x 12.70cm)
Southeast Asia, Khmer Empire (Angkor culture), ca. 12th century CE. A masterful lost-wax cast bronze figure of the Hindu goddess Lakshmi, wife of Vishnu, created by artisans at the Khmer court. She stands on a small square stand that was cast as part of the statue, wearing an ornate skirt and belt, wearing a variety of necklaces, bracelets, anklets, and earrings and a large headdress. She has four arms, holding a discus, a conch, a mango, and a closed lotus flower. Size: 3.75" W x 10" H (9.5 cm x 25.4 cm)The details are remarkable on this figure, especially of her ornament and clothing. In the Khmer style, these details are three-dimensional, suggesting that she was made to be viewed from all angles and perhaps placed in the center of a room. She has a rich appearance, doubtless based on what elite women at the Khmer court would have worn themselves. While this artwork was religious - priests supervised its execution - its realism is unmistakable and some scholars believe that gods and goddesses were portrayed with the features of individual members of the royal court. This sculpture and others like it would have both emphasized the power of the monarchy and given high ranking people joy - after all, who wouldn't want to see themselves portrayed by the finest artisans, compared to a goddess? Lakshmi was a fitting choice, as she is the goddess of wealth of all kinds - not just material wealth, but also the wealth of fame and family. Provenance: Ex- Private Az collection, ex San Francisco collection Condition: Light green, smooth patina overall; details are excellent All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Southeast Asia, Thailand, Ratanakosin period, ca. 19th century CE. This is a fine example of a hollow cast gilded bronze depiction of the Buddha wearing wonderfully elaborate clothing, seated atop a multi-tiered throne. Pottery from the casting process remains inside of the statue and is visible under the base. The back has two loops for suspension. Size: 3.1" L x 6.2" W x 9.35" H (7.9 cm x 15.7 cm x 23.7 cm)Shiny black lacquer remains, as does gilding. Siddhartha is depicted with serene features, including large eyes, and has an enormous, multi-tiered ushnisha. His ears are long, emphasizing his wealth - they have been stretched from wearing large earrings. Buddhas are always depicted in different mudras, or poses, that represent historical moments in the Buddha's life, forms of meditation, or a symbolic combination of both. His hands are in the Dhyana Mudra. This is a gesture of meditation, with the hands placed in the lap, right hand on left, with fingers full stretched out and palms facing upwards. This sculpture is a quintessential example of the Ratanakosin style with its flame-like motifs emerging from the shoulders and ears of the crown, beautiful robe with a floral design, and elaborately decorated pedestal. Provenance: Ex-Private Boulder, CO collection acquired at Indochine Gallery Condition: Wear to the gilt and lacquer as shown.
