David Wynne (British, 1926-2014) Boy with a Dolphin Limited edition sterling silver sculpture hallmarked by Mappin & Webb, London, 1980, on marble base etched and gilt tooled MAPPIN & WEBB to one side, the other DAVID WYNNE 87/250, with Mappin & Webb Certificate, in fitted case, in good condition, only wear and tarnishing. Provenance: Purchased by vendor's father directly from Mappin & Webb, circa 1980/1 thence by descent The boy holding onto the dorsal fin was modelled on the artist's son Roland David Amadeus Wynne (1964-1999) who was 9 years old in 1973 when the original bronze was conceived. This silver piece, one of 250, produced by Mappin & Webb after the original bronze. The Boy with a Dolphin was unveiled in 1975 at the corner of Chelsea's Albert Bridge and Embankment and went on to become one of London's most famous landmarks. Without the restraints of formal training Wynne used a double cantilever structure incorporating the boy's arm and tail of the dolphin to unwittingly create a masterpiece of engineering and design. Wynne's determination to convey the unbridled freedom of the boy and dolphin was achieved not through photographs but hours of observing live dolphins at the London Dolphinarium located at 65 Oxford Street open from 1971-1973 and when in the wild in California. Of the piece he said: “the boy is being shown that if you trust the world, the thrills and great happiness are yours… if one meets a dolphin in the sea, he is the genial host, you the honoured guest.”

Antoine Louis Barye, 1796 – 1875JAGUAR ERLEGT EINEN HASENHöhe: 40 cm.Breite: 102 cm.Tiefe: 38 cm.Frankreich, 19. Jahrhundert.Bronze, gegossen, dunkel patiniert. (1410573) (19)Antoine-Louis Barye,1796 – 1875JAGUAR DEVOURING A RABBIT Height: 40 cm. Width: 102 cm. A bronze version was immediately ordered by the French Minister of Home Affairs on 8 October 1851 and exhibited at the Salon in 1852 (no. 1295). Rory Breslin (b.1963) The Thames Mask Bronze, 73cm high x 43cm wide x 29cm deep (28¾ x 17 x 11½'') Edition 3/3The Thames Mask is an evocation of the River-God keystone on the North Wing of Somerset House on the Strand in London. The countenance apparently pensive though his slightly furrowed brow also gives a slightly quizzical look to his visage, which is emphasised further by the asymmetrical curls emanating from the traditional leather watchman's cap. Either side of his brow and cap are adorned the fruits, flowers and staples of the Thames' river banks. Barley, apples, wildflowers and the English rose express the fecundity and abundance of the river's hinterland. Framing the floral luxuriance and bringing the eye back in to the centre of the mask are two mute swans, perhaps a reference to one of Elizabeth II's lesser-known titles; the Seigneur of the Swans, a holdover from an era centuries ago when the regal avians denoted class, wealth and status. The strange and ancient relationship between the swan and the British crown manifests itself to this day in a tradition known as the “Swan Upping". The lower portion of the sculpture from the ringlets either side of the eyes to the tips at the base of the beard evoke the meandering bends of the Thames, with its gentle whirls and eddies. Somerset House was designed by Sir William Chambers in 1776. The keystone heads were originally carved by either Joseph Wilton or Agostino Carlini, founding members of the Royal Academy; according to Joseph Baretti in his Guide through the Royal Academy (1780), "the whole of the carvings in the various fronts of Somerset Place — excepting Bacon's bronze figures — were carved from finished drawings made by [Giovanni Battista] Cipriani."

SHEREE HOVSEPIAN (IRANIAN/AMERICAN B. 1974) UNTITLED (COLUMN) Bronze with black patina Height: 40cm (15½in.)Executed in 2012. This work is unique. A photographer by training, the Iranian-American artist Sheree Hovsepian is fascinated with the human body. Hovsepian has exhibited at Rachel Uffner Gallery, the Israel Museum, and Parrish Art Museum; her work can be found in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago. Hovsepian's œuvre is largely comprised of collages that frame a monochromatic photograph with found objects and everyday materials. Her columnal bronzes are equally unique, as their lost-wax casting process ensures that each iteration is different from the last. Indeed, she subverts the classical use of the medium - polished, refined figurative sculptures - by allowing conspicuous traces of her hand to texture the surface, as in Bronze Sculpture on Wooden Plinth. This sculpture may engage only indirectly with Hovsepian's characteristic focus on the body, but it is no less concerned with materiality and form.
ANTHONY PEARSON (AMERICAN B. 1969) UNTITLED (POUR ARRANGEMENT) 2008 Bronze sculpture with silver nitrate patina, base, pedestal, two framed solarized silver gelatin photographs Height inc. pedestal, base and bronze 144cm (56½in.), dimensions of framed photographs, each 42 x 35.5cm (16.5 x 14in.)Provenance: Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York Acquired from the above in 2008Working in his native Los Angeles, Anthony Pearson's contemplative, understated practice traverses several media. He has been the subject of solo shows at Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis, and Midway Contemporary Art, Minneapolis; his work is in the permanent collections of the Hammer Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago. Allowing him to combine various techniques and materials, Pearson's 'arrangements' make for engaging juxtapositions of forms. Several such works share the specific hybrid configuration at hand - a sculpture flanked by two photographs - forming a contemporary garniture of sorts. Pearson calls attention to the materiality of his creation: the unyielding lines of the picture frames throw the uneven, oozing metal sculpture into sharp relief. Like the poured bronze, the solarised photographs toe the line between controlled and arbitrary processes, such as Pearson's carefully incised lines which are subjected to overexposure naturally creating a random pattern and effect Condition Report: Mould to one of the silver gelatin photographs, mount and backboard. Surface dirt throughout bronze, base and pedestal. Condition Report Disclaimer
