An archaistic cast gilt-bronze figurine of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara standing on a gussetted dais on a trapezoidal base; the Bodhisattva is shown with carefully modelled bands, the left hand holding a phial and the right raise. Property of a London Gentleman; acquired before 1975. Avalokiteshvara is the Bodhisattva of infinite compassion who put off entering Nirvana for the sake of helping all living creatures gain enlightenment. He is also known as Chenrezig, or in the female form of Kwan Yin. He is the most popular Buddhist deity after the Buddha himself and the Dalai Lama is considered to be the earthly manifestation of him. The vase that Avalokiteshvara holds contains the water of compassion which has the quality of removing suffering, purifying the defilements of the body, speech and mind, and lengthening life. 1.1 kg, 25 cm (9 3/4").
