Chance R.N. (4) . Wolseley helmet in good structural condition, with slight staining around the top of the pugarree and spots of soiling to the exterior. The flap is mounted with a gilt metal crowned reverse ER Cypher. The edge of the flap is with deep engraved floral decoration, the box is of red leather with two gold bullion lines and complete with silver hallmarked belt loops. Clean condition.

West Somerset Yeomanry Victorian Officer Sabretache. A scarce post 1881 example. The face with scarlet backing cloth, edged in silver lace of regimental oak leaf and acorn pattern. To the centre a bullion embroidered entwined crowned VR cypher with three part padded title scroll. Complete with gilt D rings for the slings and pocket. Age wear and moth, silver lace poorly enhanced and stitching faults to the leather backing. In 1881 the Yeomanry became Hussars and adopted the scarlet facing to the sabretache.

Full dress sword belt with gilt buckle sword slings and two lines of bullion indicating a junior Officer .... Full dress bullion epaulettes with silver bullion foul anchor and no twist tassels indicating a Sub Lieutenant. Housed in the original black tin transit/storage box. The lid with painted name of H.G. Grace RN. Clean condition near VGC bullion bright. Lt Cdr Grace served during WW2 his ships included HMS Varnoc Norway 1940 St.Nazaire 1941 HMS Quail Salerno Landings, he remained in the Royal Navy after the end of the war.

The interior with wide cream leather sweatband, bearing ink initials SED, and crimson silk pleated lining printed with crowned logo of Moore & Co. 14, St. James St, London. Complete with white over red droop feather plume. Housed in its shaped tin bearing brass retail plate and brass name plate engraved J.S. Drax Esqr M.P.

Complete with silvered buttons of a Victorian crown within a wreath and to the left arm an black morning armband possibly marking the death of Queen Victoria. Each richly embroidered with thistle pattern gold embroidery, the latter also with gilt buttons, which are repeated to the double line of 17 buttons to the front (one absent). The tails again with velvet turn backs, thistle pattern gold embroidery skirt ornaments and gold embroidery thistle tail ornaments. .... Complete with impressive box pattern green velvet epaulettes each with bullion gilt wire crescent encircling a padded cushion embroidered with a Scottish thistle and title. The thistle embroidery is repeated to the strap of the epaulette and incorporated three arrows. Both complete with original fire gilt mounted button and with fine twist wire tassels ... Together with dark green Melton overalls with 2 inch wide gold thistle pattern lace down the seams. Bullion remains fresh and bright. Minor age wear. The gilt hilt of regulation pattern with stepped pommel and black shagreen grip. Housed in black leather and gilt mounted scabbard, complete with bullion sword knot. The sword with some age wear, dark spots and pitting to the blade, chape to scabbard loose.

The Earl of Listowel KP, JP, DL, ( 1833-1924), fine Victorian Irish deputy Lord Lieutenants dress uniform by Henry Poole, comprising scarlet tunic with silver bullion shamrock decorated collar and cuffs and silvered crown buttons, trousers with broad shamrock silver lace, pair leather boots, silver bullion dress belt with sword slings, a bicorn hat with silver lace and feather plume, a fine silk sash for the Order of Saint Patrick all contained in a japanned tin trunk with brass plaque 'Earl of Listowel'. The Earl was an Anglo-Irish Peer, Soldier and liberal politician. A Great War O.B.E. group of four awarded to Engineer Commander T. A. Graham, Royal Naval Reserve and Mercantile Marine The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, O.B.E. (Military) Officer’s 1st type breast badge, silver-gilt, hallmarks for 1918, in Garrard, London, case of issue; 1914-15 Star (Ch. Eng., T. A. Graham, R.N.R.); British War and Victory Medals (Eng. Commr. T. A. Graham R.N.R.) with original named card boxes of issue; together with the related miniature awards mounted as worn, nearly extremely fine (4) £300-£400 --- O.B.E. London Gazette 24 May 1919: ‘For valuable services as Engineering Officer of H.M.S. Orbita, whilst employed on ocean escort duties.’ The original Recommendation, submitted by Captain Ballard of the Orbita, states: ‘This officer was 63 years of age and at all times set a fine example of devotion to duty, untiring zeal and cheeriness.’ Thomas Alexander Graham was born at Tillicoultry, Clackmannan, Scotland in 1856. In 1881 he joined the Pacific Steam Navigation Company serving in several merchant vessels rising through the Engineering ranks, and as well as seagoing became an engineering inspector for ship construction. In 1914 he was the Chief Engineer of the S.S. Oronsa and in March 1915 he was appointed Chief Engineer of the S.S. Orbita at the Harland and Wolff shipyard, Belfast. On the requisitioning of S.S. Orbita he was Commissioned as Engineering Commander, Royal Naval Reserve, and stayed with her for the duration of the Great War. The Royal Mail Steam Packet Orbita was commissioned by the Admiralty in 1915, and was fitted out with heavy guns and converted to an Auxiliary Cruiser in which capacity she served continually for four years of the Great War. Orbita carried the members of the British Political and Commercial Mission to the Republics of South America. On one voyage she carried millions of pounds worth of gold bullion from South Africa to Halifax, Nova Scotia for New York and Ottawa. In 1918 she was the only convoy escort for a convoy of 40 vessels from Newport News to Europe, only two ships of the convoy being lost. For his services in the S.S. Orbita Graham was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, and was invested with his insignia by H.M. The King on 31 July 1919. His Royal Naval Reserve Commission was cancelled in October 1919, and he returned to the Merchant Navy, serving until his retirement in 1921. Sold together with a large quantity of original documents, including the recipient’s Board of Trade Certificate of Competency as First Class Engineer, dated 24 October 1885; four Captain’s personal conduct reports from the Captain of Orbita; letter from the Offices of the Pacific Steam Navigation Company congratulating Graham on the award of the O.B.E.; Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood enclosure slip for the Warrant of Appointment of the O.B.E.; the recipient’s own typed narrative of the record long voyage of Orbita in 1915; a photograph of the officers of Orbita from September 1916; the recipient’s typed note of ‘items of interest regarding the R.M.S.P. Orbita’; the recipient’s record of his Merchant Navy and Royal Naval Reserve service from 1881, when he joined the Pacific Steam Navigation Company, to his retirement in 1921; 21 original letters home to his daughters during the war, manly written from Orbita, with transcribed typed copies; and copied research.

Robinson, D.C.M., 74th (Yeomanry) Divisional Signals Company, Royal Engineers, late Denbighshire Hussars Princess Mary Christmas 1914 Gift Tin, empty apart from Princess Mary Christmas Card; two single riband bars with the riband of the Distinguished Conduct Medal; Royal Engineers brass cap badge; aluminium identity disc ‘D.H.Y. 5226 Robinson L., C.o.E.’; two card identity discs ‘208903 Robinson L., C. of E., R.E.’; brass signallers qualification crossed flags arm badge with four lugs; and bullion and silk embroidered sleeve signallers qualification arm badge, reasonable condition (lot) £60-£100 --- D.C.M. London Gazette 1 January 1919, citation published 3 September 1919 and corrected 27 September 1920: ‘For coolness and resourcefulness during operations in the month of September, including those east of Longavesnes and Villers Faucon. He has throughout shown marked ability in the field, grasping difficult situations accurately, and by his conduct setting an example to all ranks under fire. He succeeded in establishing Report Centres for the brigade as the advanced proceeded, keeping in constant touch with attacking battalions and the supporting artillery. This was entirely due to his initiative and energy under difficult conditions.’ Lionel Robinson attested for the Denbighshire Hussars, and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front, subsequently transferring to the 74th Divisional Signal Company, Royal Engineers, and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal with the latter unit. In addition to the D.C.M. Sergeant Robinson was also entitled to the British War and Victory Medals and the Territorial Force War Medal.
