Lot 187

A crank wound Swiss (Bells insight) cylinder music box, late 19th century, probably playing 8 airs, (air sheet) missing) on three bells with a distinctive gilt dove hammer, in an amboyna and tulipwood banded case. on bracket feet. 46 cm x 26 cm x 20 cm high The collection of the late Robert HicksonRobert was a noted London antique dealer for over 40 years. Robert started in the Silver departments in Garrards in London at the age of 15 and by the age of 20 he had risen to manage Brompton Gallery in Knightsbridge. Robert had a long and successful career within the antique trade and had a particular passion for Silver and antique Eccentricities, his passion and connoisseurship are reflected in his collection. The case is in good structural order but does have the usual slight bowing of the cover and some elements of minor veneer chips but on the whole, the damage is purely cosmetic., note: no cabinet key is present or paper Air sheet. The movement winds on the crank with moderate resistance, the cylinder runs with a little reluctance, I think a clean and re-oil would probably helpPlease note the box on investigation plays 8 Airs NOT 10 AirsThe Air indicator seems to index the corresponding tunes and all of the hammers seem to coordinate as expected, the comb has the 19th tooth tip from the left hand side missing, also the first tooth on the left seems to be a repair, and the movement has some slight surface corrosion and is evident below the silvering of the register of airs but this is again cosmetic. The above information is of course a guide because any mechanical device of this age will have slight faults and problems, but I have tried to cover them in my condition report.
