A camera lucida,c.1900, by Boucart of Paris, engraved 'Boucart, Coustrt, Quai de L'horologe, 35, Paris', in a fitted case similarly inscribed in gilt,case 26.5cm long (2)The camera lucida was patented by William Hyde Wollaston in 1806. The optical principles were established 200 years earlier by Johannes Kepler, but never developed. The term camera lucida, Latin for 'well-lit room', as opposed to camera obscura, 'dark room', is Wollaston's. The device is a drawing aid allowing optical superimposition of the subject viewed on the surface upon which the artist is drawing. It was used by the aeronautic and graphic departments of armies and museums.Condition report: All hinges, screws and joints working relatively smoothly and smells as if it has been lubricated relatively recently.Some dust to leaves, but seemingly free of scratches and chips, as hopefully illustrated in the photos.No obvious major faults.
