Etat II+. Bob Hammons Watch, Worn During the Battle of Stavelot This is a standard U.S. military watch, with the dial present but the glass missing, as well as the strap. The back is marked with ,Ord Dept USA OC-298169., The watch comes with a set of documents sent by Bob Hammons to historian W.C. Cavanaugh. One of these documents includes a typed and signed affidavit in which Hammons explains that he wore this watch, particularly on December 18, 1944, during the assault by Peiper s troops on the town of Stavelot, where he was with his comrades. As he writes, this watch survived the freezing waters of the Ambleve River, through which they escaped after his section was hit by an 88mm shell, killing four of his comrades. Included are a significant set of correspondence from Anthony Calvanese, COA 825th TD BN US ARMY, to William C. Cavanaugh, detailing his experiences during the Battle of the Bulge, as well as a photo reprint of Doug Neuwman, KIA on December 18, 1944, a reprint of Bob Hammons in Tank Destroyer uniform, a reprint of Hammons standing in front of his armored car at Stavelot, a reprint featuring LR Armstrong, Hammons, and Hauser, and a reprint of Ables, Hammons, and Richardson. In the night of December 17, 1944, soldiers of Kampfgruppe Peiper, 1st Panzer Division ,LSSAH,, halted before the town of Stavelot. On the morning of December 18, they charged down the hill towards the American troops positioned there. This item was given to historian William C. Cavanaugh by the veteran, who was a recognized specialist in the Battle of the Bulge and whose publications are highly regarded in the field. This is an important historical memento, coming directly from the veteran and providing his story, placing the item in the context of the events. It is extremely rare to recover objects that can be directly linked to the events they were part of. The items show some wear and patina. Condition, II+.

Notable wear and patina are visible on the piece. This item was recovered in La Gleize, a section of the Belgian municipality of Stoumont in the Walloon region of Liege province. The battles fought here were some of the most significant episodes of the Battle of the Bulge, as the outcome of these engagements marked the failure of the German offensive. From December 18 to 24, 1944, it pitted the LAH Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler against the tanks of the 3rd Armored Division, supporting infantry from the 30th Infantry Division 5, nicknamed ,Roosevelt s SS, by German radio, and later against paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division. This piece thus originates from one of the armored vehicles of Kampfgruppe Peiper, which included Panthers and Tiger IIs. This is a highly significant item from one of the key locations of the Battle of the Bulge. Condition I-.
