Zeppelin Hindenburg and her sister ship Graf-Zeppelin publicity photographs. This lot consists of six gelatin-silver German-titled photographs taken for the Deutsche Zepplin-Reederei company. The DZR is a German-based commercial airline that operated Zeppelin airships in regular transatlantic revenue service, including the famous LZ129 Hindenburg before her fateful journey to North America. The six photographs relate to early tours Zeppelin (Hindenburg) took from Friedrichshafen which consist of interior photographs; including that of the gondola with three figures at the instruments; a chef in the galley kitchen, the radio control room with operator seated at his desk; passenger cabin and the dining area. Each photograph mounted on board with titles, approx 25.5 x 42.5 cms. The lot comprises of another four promotional gelatin-silver photographs of The Hindenburg's sister ship 'Graf Zepplin' LZ 127 including a photograph of the passenger quarters; a photograph of figures playing cards; passenger quarters, the kitchen and the dining room approx 30 x 22.5 cms, each photograph mounted to board. Included is a rare circa 1935 Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederei Company linen bonnet flag with eagle, zeppelin and swatztika motif, possibly used on the vehicle of a high-ranking member of the DZR during their short-lived association with the Nazi Party. Furthermore a rare circa 1935/6 Leipziger Schulbildverlag von F.E. Wachsmuth scholastic wall chart depicting the Zeppelin LZ129 Hindenburg, with vital statistics and a striking image of the airship together with a three-dimensional drawing and an image of the gondola cockpit with figures at the helm, approx 115 x 80 cms. A sepia-toned advertising poster of the Graf Zepplin (Zeppelin LZ 127), with the Olympic Games symbol inviting the public to experience the airship, open daily from 8am to 5pm, group rates apply, with the necessary contact details, approx 45w x 65 h cms. The photographs and poster are contained in the original brown paper addressed to Captain Sinclair J.A; an English pilot, airship enthusiast and author of two books on the subject of airships including Famous Airships of the World and Airships in Peace and War publ. Rich & Cowan. The brown paper contains the original Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederei baggage label to: Captain J.A Sinclair London with another label that refers to the Berlin Anhalter Bahnhof (former railway terminal in Berlin opened in 1841- closed in 1952). The following provenance has been shared by the vendor: My father, the late Sir John Trelawny 12th Bt; was a keen pilot in the mid-1930's, he owned a Puss Moth and attended air-rallies at Brooklands and in Europe. He was a Flight Lieutenant with the RAF Volunteer Reserve and had a very keen interest in the development of airships. I discovered the contents of the above lot after his demise in 1956, I believe that it was passed to him by Captain James Sinclair; as well as being acquainted they shared a common interest in flying and airships.
