Siegfried Wichmann, Carl Spitzweg und die französischen Zeichner, Ausst.-Kat. Haus der Kunst München, 1985, S. 137, Nr. 101 (m. Abb.), S. 426. Siegfried Wichmann, Carl Spitzweg. Der Angler. Dokumentation, Starnberg-München, R.v.u.a.K. 1995, S. 24f., Bayerische Staatsbibliothek München, Inv.-Nr. Ana 656 SW 76. As a draughtsman, illustrator, engraver, painter, sculptor and, above all, caricaturist of politicians and more generally of his compatriots, Honoré Daumier changed our perception of political and social caricature, and took a humorous swipe at the monarchy in power. In 1831 and 1832, the publication of two lithographs stigmatising the vices of Louis-Philippe's monarchy, Gargantua and La Cour du roi Pétaud, led to him being imprisoned for six months. This experience marked a turning point in Daumier's life. From then on, he did few political caricatures, except for Le Ventre législatif, Rue Transnonain and the statuette of Ratapoil (1851-1852), based on the image of a regime that the artist despised. The law passed on the 29th of August 1835 against press freedom sounded the death knell for caricatures and political satire. The artist now had no choice but to depict contemporary society, its mores and attitudes, and made the most out of it. Charivari, the newspaper founded by Philipon in 1832, was his favourite playground and his best gallery. His desire to denounce and report on events in society stemmed from his family and personal experience, as he had the opportunity to observe the behaviour of lawyers, judges, bailiffs, cursed artists and the scum of society.... Honoré Daumier did not achieve the financial fame needed to make a living from his work, but art history and the market nevertheless consider him to be one of the greatest cartoonists and painters of his time. The Three spectators are three concentrated observers caught up in the spectacle before their eyes. Witnesses to a hearing? Taking part in a political debate? Watching a play or an opera? No one knows. In any case, the play of light and shadow on the faces, the theatrical setting, the expressions of the three spectators, the perfect balance of the composition, all testify of Daumier's genius as a caricaturist and of the confidence of his brushstrokes. It shows his extraordinary gift for bringing a character to life, with a tilt of the eyebrows or a few creases in the forehead. The different touches of watercolour add to the general contrast of light and shades. When technical mastery combines with the intensity, intelligence and accuracy of the message, we can call it genius. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a reduced rate of 5.5% on the hammer price and the prevailing rate on buyer's premium if the item remains in EU.TVA sur les objets importés à un taux réduit de 5.5% sur le prix d'adjudication et un taux en vigueur sur la prime d'achat dans le cas où l'objet reste dans l'Union Européenne. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Max Slevogt Herakles im Kampf mit der Hydra. Orig.-Tuschfederzeichnung, monogrammiert und datiert. Mit eigenhändiger Beschriftung in blauem Buntstift. 1900. - Heracles fights the Hydra of Lerna. Orig. ink drawing on thin smooth paper, monogrammed and dated. With handwritten inscription in blue colored pencil. Caricature on the Boxer Rebellion in China. - Mounted on cardboard at the left margin. Shaded with blue colored pencil and partially reworked with white pencil. James Gillray,  British 1757-1815- The works of James Gillray from the original plates, with the addition of many subjects not before collected; a volume of etchings, published London, 1851, printed for Henry G. Bohn by Charles Whiting, York Street, Covent Garden, each titled, numbered (upper right corner) and inscribed in the plate, most bearing annotations in pencil; the binding part Morocco with marbled paper, with gilding on the page edges and the spine, the sheets various sizes, the volume 64.9 x 50.6 cm. overall. Provenance:  Private Collection, UK. Note:  The present volume contains approximately 580 plates by the renowned political satirist James Gillray, many of which were first published between c.1791-1811 by Hannah Humphrey, Georgian London's leading seller of caricature prints.  After Hannah Humphrey's son and successor George Humphrey died in 1835, Gillray's original plates were offered at auction, for the price of the copper from which they were fashioned. Henry Bohn purchased the plates and began publishing new impressions for the Victorian collectors' market, bound in attractive volumes like the one presented here.

Richard Dighton,  British 1795-1880- The Squire of Hertford; pencil and watercolour on two sheets of paper, joined, signed and inscribed 'Richd Dighton [?] / 2 Sloane St. / Knightsbridge / London' verso, inscribed 'The "Squire" of Hertford.' (lower edge), bears 'Bristol Board' blindstamp (lower left), 30.7 x 21.8 cm. Provenance:  The Property of the Late Reverend John Watson. Note:  Dighton was the son of the caricaturist Robert Dighton (1752-1814), and his early works, in particular, reveal the influence of his father. These works are often seen as pre-cursors to the 'Vanity Fair' illustrations which were produced towards the end of the 19th century. Later in his career, however, Dighton's work signal a move away from caricature towards more formal and less exaggerated portraiture.  The present work is characteristic of Dighton's portraits of well-dressed and evidently wealthy figures, although the exact identity of this 'Squire of Hertford' is not clear.
