Er widmet sich der Malerei bei Professor Henrik Mayer und besucht die Bildhauerklasse von Henry Kreis. 1947 wechselt er an die Museum School, Boston. Hier arbeitet er u.a. bei Karl Zerbe. Dieser vermittelt die Malerei Heckels oder Beckmanns und lässt zudem seine Schüler den abstrakten Expressionismus der amerikanischen Schule mit Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Sam Francis nachvollziehen. 1948 kommt Shapiro nach New York an die Art Students League, sein Lehrer ist u.a. Reginald Marsh. 1950 kehrt Shapiro nach Boston zurück. An der freien Akademie, der Butera School of Art, belegt er Kurse, sein privater Mentor ist Hyman Bloom. 1955 reist er als Fulbright-Stipendiat glücklich nach Europa. Er arbeitet im Atelier 17 bei Stanley W. Hayter. Miró, Chagall und Giacometti lernt er erkennen. Corneille und de Nicolas Staël und viele andere werden seine Freunde. Er bezieht ein eigenes Atelier im Impasse Ronsin. Brancusi und Tinguely sind seine unmittelbaren Nachbarn.
