ANDRÉ LHOTE , BORDEAUX, 1885 - PARIS, 1962 Paddlewheel boat Oil on canvas 34 x 25 cm The mood is one of national celebration. Straight as an 'i', the mast erected at the front of this paddle wheel boat displays the French flag. It echoes the miniature flag of a boat that crosses it, in the foreground. We are in an estuary where the flow of brown water laden with alluvial deposits mingles with that of a blue sea whose expanse can be seen beyond the horizon. In the foreground, trees form a vegetal barrier, framing this naval scene with their branches. It is by the colours that we recognise the elements, for here the forms are refined, geometrised, reduced to their signifying role. The leaves of the trees are organised in zigzags, the smoke in discs, the current in lines. Reduced to simple parallelepipeds, the two boats advance their dark rectangular silhouettes that seem to slide on rails. André Lhote adheres to Cubist theories in constructing his painting, borrowing from Futurism his decomposition of movement, perceptible in the 'smoke rings' of the boat's chimney and in the foam of its paddle wheel. The pastel colour palette is indebted to Cézanne, of whom Lhote was a fervent admirer.. André Lhote (1885-1962) was a French painter and art theorist. After a ten-year apprenticeship in the Courbaterre cabinetmaking workshop, he attended decorative art classes at the Bordeaux School of Fine Arts until 1904. He then devoted himself to painting, discovering Gauguin (1848-1903) and Cézanne (1839-1906) but also African art. When he arrived in Paris in 1907, he took part in the Salon d'Automne and then, in 1910, organised his first exhibition at the Eugène Druet gallery. It was in 1912, with his painting French Landscape, that he joined the Cubist movement, although he rejected its abstract side, remaining attached to Romanesque frescoes and primitive art. Always seeking to maintain a link with classical painting, through the subjects or the composition, he wanted to be part of modernity, not through rupture, but through continuity. From 1918 onwards, he taught painting in various academies until he founded his own academy in Montparnasse in 1925, where many painters of the Paris School, as well as Hans Hartung (1904-1989) and Tamara de Lempicka (1898-1980), were trained. In 1919, he became an art critic for the Nouvelle Revue française. The period 1920-1930 was one of great activity for Lhote, who took part in numerous exhibitions in France and abroad and gave lectures. A major initiator of reflections on the evolution of art, he took part in the great polemics of the art scene between the two world wars. In particular, he wrote the Traité du paysage (1939) and Traité de la figure (1950). Lhote also organised summer courses for his students in his house in Mirmande in the Drôme from 1926 onwards. In 1938, he bought a house in Gordes where, during the Occupation, many artists found refuge, notably Marc Chagall (1887-1985). In 1950, he discovered Egypt and Pharaonic painting and published Masterpieces of Egyptian Painting (1954). 1958 was the year of the major retrospective of his work at the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris, followed by retrospective exhibitions scheduled over two years at the Juster Gallery in New York. He is determinedly figurative and non-conceptual maintaining a colourful, poetic, narrational and sometimes ironic stance.

Kisling, von dem aus dem gleichen Jahr gleich mehrere Gemälde bekannt sind, die sich der Landschaft um Saint Tropez widmen, zeigt uns von stark erhobenem Betrachterstandpunkt aus das absteigende Ufer mit seinen fruchtbaren Feldern und seiner typischen Bebauung, die zu den Besitzern der Felder gehört. In leuchtenden Farben, die uns an die Landschaftsbilder von Chagall erinnern, führt er den Blick des Betrachters über Bäume in variantenreichen Grüntönen hinab auf das lapislazuliblaue Band, das den Golf von Saint Tropez kennzeichnet. Kisling liebte die Farben und das Spiel der Formen. Ebenfalls aus dem Jahr 1918 etwa ist ein Landschaftsgemälde bekannt, das bei kleinerem Format die Oberflächenbeugung der Felder geometrisiert und als flächige Rechtecke darstellt (Inv.Nr. Kis01 Montclair, Kasser Art Foundation).Der Künstler war ein französischer Maler polnisch-jüdischer Herkunft. Er studierte zunächst an der Akademie der Schönen Künste Krakau, ehe er nach Paris ging und ab 1910 im Stadtteil Montmatre wohnte. Er war mit vielen seiner Zeitgenossen befreundet, u.a. mit seinem Nachbarn Amedeo Modigliani, der ihn malte. Nach der Besetzung Frankreichs im Zweiten Weltkrieg floh er in die USA.
