Lot 75

EMILIO GRAU SALA (Barcelona, 1911 - 1977)."Pensive young woman", Paris, January 1937.Oil on canvas.Signed, dated and located in the lower right area and on the back. The frame is damaged.Size: 55 x 46 cm; 77 x 68 cm (frame). The feminine universe fascinated Grau Sala, and this fascination is translated into intimate scenes which, in spite of their familiarity, are located halfway between reality and reverie. Scenes such as the present one bear witness to this: the subdued colour dilutes lines and forms in a balanced, harmonious composition featuring a young woman waiting pensively at a bar counter. In this way an atmosphere of light and independent colour is constructed, nuanced by Grau Sala's highly personal textures, which play at confusing the space, awakening the viewer's imagination.Son of the draughtsman Juan Grau Miró, Grau Sala combined his attendance at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts with an essentially self-taught training. In 1930 he held his first exhibition at the Badriñas gallery in Barcelona. At the outbreak of the Civil War, in 1936, he moved to Paris, where he settled in the Montparnasse colony of Spanish artists. That same year he was awarded the first Carnegie Prize. During the twenty-five years he spent there he became closely acquainted with the avant-garde, although he always favoured a colourist figuration derived from Impressionism and Fauvism. It was a path already taken by the commercial circuit, surpassed in terms of novelty by Cubism and Surrealism, but which was kept alive at a high level thanks to masters such as Bonnard, Chagall and Dufy. In fact, he soon became known in Paris as the successor to the Impressionist spirit and values, directly related to Bonnard and Vuillard. Grau Sala's stylistic choice conditioned that of his wife, Ángeles Santos, who abandoned her singular surrealism for a more conventional landscape, a decision that critics did not hesitate to regret. The success of his style led Grau Sala to devote himself also to graphic work (engravings, lithographs, illustrations for novels, posters...), as well as theatre sets. The grace and finesse of his characters, the vivacity of the colours and the elegant atmosphere of the environments he depicted brought him great success and recognition all over the world. He held several solo exhibitions, mainly in Barcelona and Paris, but also in cities such as New York, Toulouse, London and Los Angeles. In 1963 he returned to Barcelona, when the stagnant figuration of Franco's Spain was beginning to be challenged by Oteiza, Chillida, Tàpies and the "El Paso" collective. However, he remained faithful to his style, and until his death in 1975 he worked in his own personal style, centred on his favourite themes, female figures, interiors and landscapes, in a vaguely classical, nostalgic 19th-century setting. After his death, and for more than a decade, Grau Sala was overshadowed by the many novelties that were emerging in democratic Spain, but from the 1990s onwards, the new boom in mid-level collecting revived Grau Sala, as he was seen as an interpreter of Impressionism in a Spanish key. Works by Emilio Grau Sala are kept in the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Esteban Vicente and the Instituto Óscar Domínguez de Arte y Cultura Contemporánea.

Some light creasing and a couple of minor stains to the mount, only very slightly affecting Chagall's signature, G La Queue des Sirenes was executed by Chagall in the last months of 1945, at the end of his American exile. One of a series of gouaches, described as being 'among the most marvellous works' that Chagall produced in America, they illustrate the classic of medieval Arabic literature, The 1001 Nights, and form the basis for the lithographs commissioned by the publisher Kurt Wolff, Chagall's first important book with original prints to be published since the 1920s.

André Lhote, 1885 Bordeaux – 1962 ParisBATEAU À ROUE À AUBES Öl auf Leinwand. 23 x 34 cm. Um 1920. Rechts unten signiert „A. Lhote“. A friendship formed, and it is clear from Gauguin’s letters that he was expecting the Irishman to accompany him on his return to the South Seas. Although O’Conor declined, the relationship had a far-reaching affect on his life and his art: “… Gauguin’s strength of character and convincing style of talk made a deep impression on the young, or youngish, Irishman…” (Clive Bell, Old Friends, 1956, p. 166).Further to Gauguin’s final departure from France in 1895, O’Conor embarked on a group of nocturnes inspired by the scenery around Le Pouldu on the southern coast of Brittany, and the riverside town of Pont-Aven, 25 kilometres inland. The theme first emerged in an etching, Full Moon on the Coast, and was then developed in several moonlit seascapes painted in gouache, as well as a handful of oil paintings including The Bull and the Moon and A Moonlit Breton Landscape (Benington 1992, p. 199, nos. 81 and 84). These artworks stood apart from O’Conor’s earlier Breton landscapes on account of their greater reliance on the imagination, as if conceived from memory rather than direct observation. In Marine au Clair de Lune we see a clifftop house with a light shining in its windows, overlooking a sailing ship caught in the reflected path of the full moon, a glowing orb half hidden by a cloud at the top of the composition. The close juxtaposition of land and sea, safety and uncertainty, may be a recollection of the house at St Julien, a hamlet of Le Pouldu situated at the mouth of the Laita river, where O’Conor had stayed with his friend Armand Seguin in 1893 and, two years later, the two of them watched as Gauguin spontaneously composed an etching. Writing to Seguin four years later, O’Conor revealed that he had plans for a picture of St Julien, perhaps identifiable with the present work. One of its most striking features is the way its dreamlike quality has been given substance through technical innovation: O’Conor has applied his colours very thickly, making extensive use of the palette knife in order to obtain a richly textured surface. The granular effect of this build-up of pigment is particularly suited to capturing the glimmer of light on the water surrounding the two-masted vessel. Like most of his other moonlit pictures, the present work was most probably begun during the years 1895-98 when O’Conor was living in comparative isolation at Rochefort-en-terre, a hilltop village in the heart of rural Brittany. Unable, or unwilling, to accompany Gauguin to Papeete, he may have chosen this location because it was less visited by artists and tourists than Pont-Aven, more authentically Breton in its preservation of time-honoured religious and cultural practices. Here he had the space and freedom to experiment with new ideas, notably Gauguin’s dictum that the remembered image was a more effective embodiment of ideas and emotions than the observed one. By relying to a greater extent on his memory and imagination, O’Conor arrived at a range of themes that were uniquely personal to him. The mystery of a work such as Marine au Clair de Lune lifts it onto a Symbolist plane, recalling O’Conor’s association with writers such as Alfred Jarry, Léon-Paul Fargue and Charles Morice. And like Wordsworth who defined poetry as emotion recollected in tranquillity, here O’Conor seems to evoke the experiences that had meant the most to him just a few years earlier – moonlit walks, the proximity of the sea and windswept cliffs, the stimulating company of fellow artists, and a warm house to return to at the end of the day.    Jonathan Benington, February 2022
