In Falaise II she depicts the extraordinary white cliffs and rock formations formed over thousands of years in the English Channel at Normandy, France. Rising up and jutting into the English Chanel, the stunning natural rock formations reveal the beautiful effects of erosion. Like the impressionist painters, for whom Normandy was a favourite subject, Burko explores the changing effects of lights throughout the day. The subtle differences reveal the changing blue of the sky, the receding tide, and the soft shadows on the rocks. Note 3: An accomplished photographer and painter, Burko records her travels and experiences with nature in both mediums. Since flying over the Grand Canyon in 1977, the artist has focused on aerial photography. Since 2006 her work has directly addressed issues of climate change. She now visits locations such as the Arctic or the Great Barrier Reef to collect data and record the effects of global warming. Born in Brooklyn, Burko earned a BS in art history and painting from Skidmore College and an MFA in painting from the University of Pennsylvania. She was a professor at Community College of Philadelphia from 1969 to 2000, also teaching at Princeton University and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. From 1976 to 2012 she was represented by the Locks Gallery in Philadelphia. She is now represented by LewAllen Galleries in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Cindy Lisica Gallery in Houston. Her work is in numerous public and private collections, including the Delaware Art Museum, the Denver Art Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Woodmere.
