EDWARD VII: (1841-1910) King of the United Kingdom 1901-10. An intriguing, small collection of Ls.S. (2) and one A.L.S. by, and relating to, the future King Edward VII, comprising - (i) Baron Maurice de Hirsch (1831-1896) German Jewish financier and philanthropist; L.S., Moritz Hirsch, one page, 8vo, Rue de l'Elysee, Paris, 15th January 1894, to Sir George Lewis, stating, in full, 'I enclose my check (no longer present) for £110,000 (One hundred and Ten thousand Pounds) in exchange of which please send me the letter of H.R.H.' With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original registered envelope. (ii) King Edward VII - L.S., Albert Edward P, as Prince of Wales, one page, 8vo, Sandringham, Norfolk, 19th January 1894, to Sir George Lewis, stating, in full, 'Please pay the sum of £110,000 in your hands in such manner as I have personally directed you'. With blank integral leaf. (iii) King Edward VII - A.L.S., with his initials A. E., as Prince of Wales, three pages, 8vo, Pall Mall, London, 9th April n.y. (presumably 1894?), to Sir George Lewis ('My dear Lewis'), on the printed stationery of the Marlborough Club. The prince thanks his correspondent for their letter and 'for giving me a so full account of all the arrangements…..you were good enough to make by my desire', continuing 'Everything seems most satisfactory, but should there be any points hereafter concerning which I should like to speak to you, I shall not hesitate in asking you to come & see me concerning them as you suggest', and further writing of social and sporting activities, 'I had a most enjoyable stay in the South of France & enjoyed my yachting immensely wh. did me a world of good. "Britannia" was fortunate enough in winning all the races she sailed for. Next week I am going to Guernsey for a great family wedding'. (iv) [George Lewis] (1833-1911) English lawyer of Jewish extraction. A slim oblong 8vo envelope (suitable for a cheque to be sent in) addressed in an unidentified hand to George Lewis at 10 & 11 Ely Place, Holborn, and marked Confidential. With the attractive red, blue and gold cipher of the Prince of Wales to the verso. Somewhat dust stained. An interesting group of letters, not least for their associations. Some light age wear, generally VG, 4  Both Baron Maurice de Hirsch and Sir George Lewis were a part of the future King Edward VII's close circle of friends and confidantes, the latter frequently associated with criminal 'causes celebres' including the Royal Baccarat Scandal in which the Prince of Wales was called as a witness. Lewis was well known as a tidy disposer of skeletons in closets. Why Baron de Hirsch felt compelled to pay such a handsome fortune (£110,000 is the equivalent of over £15m today) for a letter of the Prince of Wales only serves to conjure up all kinds of possibilities, particularly given the Prince's reputation as a playboy. Indeed, his mother, Queen Victoria, viewed her son with distaste as frivolous, indiscreet and irresponsible, writing to her eldest daughter 'I never can, or shall, look at him without a shudder'.

Together with two carbon typed copies of letters from Rossbach to Conrad. Two file holes to the left edge of each letter, not affecting the text or signatures, VG, 7

The Countess was the illegitimate daughter of the banker Alfred de Rothschild, who provided her with considerable wealth which went towards funding the search for Tutankhamun's tomb in Egypt. The Countess continued to provide financial support for Carter's excavation of the tomb until 1925, when she reached a settlement with the Egyptian authorities whereby she gave up any claim on the contents of the tomb in return for a compensation payment of £36,000. Despite her wealth, the Countess was declared bankrupt in 1951 and spent the last years of her life living in a terraced house in Bristol. George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon (1866-1923) English peer and aristocrat, financial backer of the search for and excavation of Tutankhamun's tomb in the Valley of the Kings.

Believed to be the only pair produced for Colin's approval but did not go into production. From the vendor: 'Following his WRC drivers title win, Colin had various sponsorship deals, including one with K-Swiss, an American athletic shoe brand based in LA. In c.2005, he received this pair of prototype racing shoes to consider the style for a specific release. My understanding is that Colin wasn't keen on the length/font size of the script on the sides of the shoes. As a result, the shoes were never released for production, being the only pair of their kind.'"As well as being a Colin McRae/team Subaru admirer, I knew Colin McRae very briefly in a professional capacity prior to his accident. It highlights an important aspect of Gershwin's popularity in his own lifetime – his penchant for being at the forefront of music technology... public broadcast radio...'. Conceived as a way to raise funds for Porgy and Bess, his first full-length opera, the programme aired for the first time on the NBC Blue Network on 19 February 1934, running twice a week until the following May and revived again in September to December. It was sponsored by Feen-a-mint, a chewing gum laxative, and Gershwin selected and introduced the numbers for each programme, his informal dialogue peppered with jokes and anecdotes. The New York Times wrote after his death in July 1937: '...his genius freshened the life blood of radio... his growth and triumphs paralleled the magic advances of broadcasting which in a flash introduced his popular melodies to the entire nation...' (Sarah Sisk, 'Music by Gershwin' University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance online blog, 2017). You have really been very helpful, and if you didn't go running around the country marrying farmers, Heaven knows what we mightn't have written next. As it is, I shall probably go in for sculpture instead. It seems easier. And you, poor child, will waste your talents on monthly returns, in triplicate of artificial manures and oil-cake, Ah me!, Yours affectionately and gratefully, Blue".The other letter, dated November 21, 1951, reads "All luck, most dear Priscilla. My thoughts for you would fill a whole book of moods and tenses; But my amanuensis has left me, Fate has blessed her with a better master (Chester-with). A.A. Milne".The dedicatee was Priscilla Lutyens (great niece of architect Sir Edwin Lutyens), A.A. Milne's neighbour at Posingford Farm. She would walk across the fields to Cotchford Farm to type the manuscript for his collection of stories A Table Near the Band (1950). She continued typing for him until her engagement to Richard Chester-Master, and remained in contact with him until his death in 1956.'Blue' was A.A. Milne's nickname and used by his close friends and family, apparently because of the colour of his eyes but also perhaps due to his perpetual glum demeanour. The proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Bristol Children's Hospital.

A rare ‘Gallantry’ B.E.M. awarded to Mr. G. Cooper, for his courageous attempt to save three children from a house fire in Poole in June 1965 - he sustained serious burns in the process British Empire Medal, (Civil) E.II.R., with gallantry emblem (Garry Cooper) nearly extremely fine £1,000-£1,400 --- Provenance: Dix Noonan Webb, September 2007. B.E.M. London Gazette 24 May 1966 Garry Cooper, Steel Erector, West Boldon, Co. Durham (in a joint citation with Thomas Anthony McCarthy, Timber Yard Labourer, Poole): ‘Fire broke out in a cafe consisting of three floors. Mr. Cooper, who was passing in the street, saw that the building was on fire and on hearing that there were three children inside, entered the building in an attempt to rescue them. He heard a scream from upstairs and rushed up to the second floor. In spite of the heat and smoke, which prevented him from seeing, he reached the children’s room which was also well ablaze. Mr. Cooper was severely burnt by this time, and he threw himself out of the bedroom window on to the roof. Mr. McCarthy was sleeping in one of the bedrooms on the first floor and he was awakened when the alarm was raised. He made an immediate attempt to ascend the now fiercely burning stairway to try and rescue the children. The intense heat forced him to return. He then put on his jacket and tried again but once more was forced back. He next fetched a blanket from his bed, soaked it with water, draped it over himself, and succeeded in reaching the top of the stairway. But although he searched for the children amongst the flames and smoke he was unable to find them. Cooper and McCarthy were rescued by the Fire Brigade and taken to hospital suffering from burns. Both men made a valiant attempt to save the lives of the children.’ Garry Cooper, a steel erector employed by West Bolden Company of Durham, was visiting Poole at the time of the above described incident at the Old Town Cafe in the High Street on 12 June 1965. He returned there that October to receive a £200 cheque from the Mayor, ‘the earnings he lost during treatment and convalescence after serious burns’. Sold with several photocopied newspaper reports and other research.
