A Jacques & Son (London) travelling chess set in box, with folding mahogany chess board, with cream and stained red pieces, in original box, 23cm x 23.5cm Condition Report: Mahogany case appears to in good condition considering age. Pieces are made of bone. One white pawn is missing. One side of the boxes locking mechanism for the pieces opens and closes securely, the other half opens smoothly but does not lock securely, meaning some pieces become loose. Couple of noticeable splits to the wooden board itself. Marks and wear in places to the pieces commensurate with age and previous use.

Zierteller mit Schachbrettmuster und Eichhörnchendekor im KakiemonstilRunde, leicht vertiefte Form mit gezacktem und braun staffiertem Rand. Über Spiegel und Fahne angelegter, farbiger Dekor. Im oberen Drittel sog. Kakiemondekor aus fliegendem roten bzw. Beeren naschendem gelben Eichhörnchen, umgeben von Reisstrohbündeln, Bambus und Blattwerk. Im unteren Drittel sog. Schachbrettmuster (bzw. Brokatmuster) im Imari-Stil aus Quadratflächen mit unterschiedlichen Brokatornamenten sowie goldenen Lotusblüten auf rotem Fond. Im Boden eingepresste Dreher-und Former-Nr. 20. Schwertermarke. D. 24,5 cm. Der Dekor geht auf japanische Kakiemon-Porzellane aus Arita zurück. Erste Ausführungen mit Eichhörnchendekor auf Meissener Porzellan mit unterglasurblauem Merkurstab als Manufakturmarke sind um 1730 belegt und wurden für den französischen Kaufmann Rudolphe Lemaire gefertigt. Auch das Schachbrettmuster taucht bereits unter den Bestellungen Lemaires auf. Die Meissener Manufaktur führte Kombinationen von Kakiemon- und Imari-Stil in verschiedenen Varianten aus. Vgl.
