Alison Strachan, the binding director at Sangorski & Sutcliffe / Shepherd's, has commented on the special design of the binding: "...There was... a strong impression in my mind of Lisbet's physical appearance, which was echoed in the violence in her character as well as that shown against her by male characters in the book. The studs were a manifestation of this male/female theme and the sado-masochism of some of the male characters. The way the studs each fit into the cover of the next book, was a symbol of how the protagonists work together, their close relationship... the hand-tooled designs of each front cover were designed to echo the images of the titles and the tattoos that cover Lisbet..."

Kadhim Hayder (Iraq, 1932-1985)Divine Horses (From the Marty's Epic) oil on canvas, framedsigned (lower left), executed in 196570 x 100cm (27 9/16 x 39 3/8in).Footnotes:DIVINE HORSES (1965) / APPROACHING OBLIVION (1984)TWO HIGHLY SIGNIFICANT WORKS BY KADHIM HAYDER FROM HIS ARTISTIC PRIME AND THE END OF HIS LIFE INCLUDING A MAJOR PAINTING FROM THE 1965 MARTYR'S EPIC 'A elegiac tone has marked the work of Kadhim Hayderfor some years, ever since he painted a large number of pictures onthe martyrdom of Hussein at Karbala, but in a manner quite differentfrom that of Azzawi. For him the religious inspiration of Islamcomes through a sense of tragedy, in signs and symbols that he makeshis own; horses, helmets, swords, spears, men, women, tents, conspiracies, treacheries - the whole phantasmagoria of ancient battles ina peculiarly personal idiom.Man defiant though prisoner, though martyred and quartered;such has been his theme for a long time, partly derived from Arabhistory as he understands it, where much of his modern vision isrooted. But Kadhim Hayder has also employed his style in telling ofman in search of himself, in search of love, in search of wonder.,He unabashedly mixes the figurative with the abstract, but havingdevised a vocabulary of distinctly personal forms, the mixture serveshis purpose well, when figure and abstract seem to exchange functionand complement one another very much as in Sumerian art. His Buraq is thus in part the horse of the Prophet's night journey, and inpart the soul's journey through the dark blues of man's endless nightof mystery.'- Jabra Ibrahim JabraProvenance:Property from the collection of a prominent academic, Paris,Acquired directly from the artist by the above, who was a colleague of Kadhim Hayder at the Academy of Fine Arts Baghdad, 1970'sExhibited:The Marty's Epic, Kadhim Hayder, Baghdad National Museum, 1965The Marty's Epic, Kadhim Hayder, Sursock Museum, Beirut 1965Published:Fanoon Tashkili, Beirut, 1965THE PRESENT WORK 'I learnt from Hussain how to achieve victory while being oppressed'- Mahatma Gandhi Vigorous, dynamic and intense, 'Divine Horses' is a seminal work by one of Iraq's most enigmatic modern artists, Kadhim Hayder. Part of the artists major body of work, known as the 'Marty's Epic', the present painting was presented at the artists landmark shows in the National Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad and then in Beirut in 1965. Being offered in the market for the first time, the work comes from the prestigious private collection of one of Hayder's colleagues at the Baghdad Faculty of fine Arts.Kadhim Hayder was a master of weaving symbolism, poetic allegory and abstraction into compositions that were predominantly narrative in subject matter. As a poet, he had a lifelong fascination with the Shi'ite epic of the Martyrdom of Imam Hussein and this episode forms the subject matter of his most significant body of work, 'The Epic of the Martyr' which was exhibited in 1965 at the National Museum of Modern Art. A popular subject in Shi'ite folklore, the story of Hussein's martyrdom has been a subject of both art and popular religious expression for centuries The present work must therefore be understood in reference to Hayder's wider cycle of works dealing with the battle of Karbala; the white horses of Imam Hussein are seen mourning the death of their Martyr beneath an ominous moon. Aesthetically rich, Hayder's horses cluster together in overlapping shapes which evoke the anthropomorphised behaviour of their mourning. Kadhim Hayder studied literature at the Higher Institute for Teachers; in 1957 he earned a diploma from the Institute of Fine Arts. Between 1959 and 1962 he studied theatre design at the Central College of the Arts in London. Upon returning to Iraq, he taught at the Institute of Fine Arts, opening a department of design. He continued to teach at the Academy of Fine Arts, when it replaced the Institute of Fine Arts; his book al-Takhtit wa Elwan (Sketching and Colours) became standard reading for students there. In 1971 he organized a group called the Academicians, based on an exhibition and around a text he wrote reclaiming a Platonic notion of the academy as a way to relate the different arts to each other, and to the arts of the past. He served as president of the Union of Iraqi Artists, the Union of Arab Artists, and the Society of Iraqi Plastic Artists. Hayder began showing work while he was still a student, at a number of collective exhibitions held at Nadi al-Mansur, the major exhibition space in Baghdad during the 1950s. When his work and that of other young artists was rejected for exhibition at Nadi al-Mansur in 1958, he organized a counter-exhibition of the rejected. He also displayed his work at Al-Wasiti Gallery in Baghdad in 1964, and in 1965 he exhibited the series The Epic of the Martyr at the National Museum of Modern Art. Selected works from the series were subsequently shown in Beirut, both on their own, and as a prominent part of a collective exhibition of work by Iraqi artists at the Sursock Museum, a show that toured a number of European capitals under the sponsorship of the Gulbenkian Foundation. His work was included in many major exhibitions throughout the 1970s, such as the First Arab Biennale, Baghdad, 1974; Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, 1976; and the International Art Exhibition for Palestine held in Beirut, 1978. In 1984 he held a final solo show at the Iraqi Cultural Centre in London. His work was quickly acquired by private collectors, and thus it is only in recent years that it has entered public collections beside that of the Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad, such as that of the Barjeel Art Foundation in Sharjah, and Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Arab Art in Doha. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: PP This lot is owned by a private individual. [2]/8v one initial lost and a few words of text retouched in ink, portion of right side of final leaf missing and skilfully laid on an ancient leaf, on right side of text block words of 21 lines neatly supplied in brown ink, water-stain to lower right corner, heavier in last quire, not affecting the text apart from final two leaves, some other water-stains or spots, old repairs to penultimate leaf, 18th-century speckled boards, possibly recased, a tall copy, small folio (281 x 218 mm.), Ferrara, Johann Picardus, de Hamell, 1475.⁂ One of the earliest printed astronomical texts, and one of the rarest scientific incunables issued in Ferrara. Only ten copies of this edition are recorded in institutional libraries (four in Italy and two in the United States). The famous astronomer and traveller from Genoa, Andalo de Nigro, succeeded Cecco d'Ascoli to the chair in Florence and, in about 1330, became Giovanni Boccaccio's teacher. Geoffrey Chaucer (who, some seventy years later, wrote the first work in English on a scientific instrument - the Treatise on the Astrolabe - and was inspired by Boccaccio for his Canterbury Tales) may have known Andalo's Opus astrolabii through either the Genealogiae Deorum, which first appeared in 1472 or the De casibus virorum illustrium, printed in 1474-1475. In the latter, Boccaccio calls Andalo a 'venerable' man, and compliments him on his vast knowledge of the stars, gained 'by direct vision' during his travels around the world. In 1314 Andalo had been appointed ambassador to the Emperor of Trebisonda (Trabzon), and Giovanni Battista Ramusio, in his preface to the Viaggi di Messer Marco Polo (which opens the second volume of his Navigationi et viaggi of 1559), identified Andalo, not the Pisan Rustichello, as the prisoner to whom Marco Polo had dictated his memoirs. The Opus astrolabii was edited by the physician and astrologer Pietro Bono Avogario (d. 1506) who was active, as the colophon states, 'in foelici gymnasio ferrariensi', and it was printed by the Frenchman Jean Picard de Hamell who "is not known to have issued at Ferrara any book besides the Nigro" (BMC vi, 608). The Holy Bible containing the Old Testament and the New..., fine engraved architectural title by Chantry dated 1673, bound without Apocrypha, New Testament with separate letterpress title, 1675 bound with Whole Book of Psalms (The), 1675, together 2 works in 1 vol., ruled in red throughout including engraved title, contemporary ink inscription to head of engraved title erased but with contemporary manuscript list of Sir John Conyers's children written by his wife Lady Conyers to front free endpapers, with a later transcription loosely inserted, dedication very lightly browned, a few small spots or stains and minor marginal flaws, bound in magnificent contemporary red morocco, gilt, ?by Queens' Binder A, the covers elaborately tooled in gilt with overall design of drawer-handles, pointillé fleurons & rosettes, volutes and dots all within a roll-tooled border, spine gilt in compartments and five raised bands, with silver clasps and corner-pieces, upper catch with initials "M C" engraved on verso, g.e., a little rubbed, clasps and corner-pieces slightly tarnished, lower clasp lacking catch, [Herbert 721; Wing B2294, 2672 & 2517], 4to, Cambridge, John Hayes⁂ A pencilled note on the front free endpaper states that this is a Samuel Mearne binding but from the use of the drawer-handle tools forming an overall pattern it seems much more likely to be the work of Queens' Binder A. It is certainly very similar to those by this binder (possibly William Nott) in Maggs catalogues 1075 nos.78 & 79 and 1212 nos. 54 & 55, the roll-tool borders on all being identical.Sir John Conyers, 3rd Baronet (1649-1719) of Horden, Co. Durham. In 1675 he married Mary Newman, a kinswoman of Robert Baldwin of Staughton, Hunts., whose estate was inherited by Conyers. With the initials "MC" on the clasp this was presumably Mary's bible, possibly given to her as a wedding present. Of the nine children listed four died either stillborn or prematurely.

Circa 1930. A group of nine surface-treated plaster fish models designed by Vernon Edwards in an old card tray; accompanied by an original Gregory, Bottley & Co. Extinct Animals catalogue circa 1930. See Swinton, Dr William Elgin, Monsters of Primeval Days, London, 1931; see also, same author, The Dinosaurs - A Short History of a Great Group of Extinct Reptiles, London, 1934, wherein many of the drawings, models and dioramas created by Edwards are published, described and illustrated (the author at the Natural History Museum, London, 1924-1961, later Director of Life Sciences, Royal Ontario Museum, Canada, died 1994"). 55 grams total; fish: 51-54mm, catalogue: 22 x 14.4cm (15 1/4 x 13 3/4"). From the historic collection of Gregory, Bottley & Lloyd; acquired by Percy Bottley of Gregory, Bottley & Co. in the 1930s; formerly from a historic natural history art collection, the artistic work of Palaeontologist, Commander Vernon Edwards. Vernon Edwards is credited as being one of the most talented and influential dinosaur model makers of the 20th century. His work has appeared in museums and galleries around the world; it was a major influence on movie producers and early special effects creators, particularly when films such as ??The Lost World?? and ??King Kong?? began to showcase dinosaurs as part of the increasingly popular ‘monster movies’ of the 1920?'s and 30??s. Edwards was born in 1891 into a naval family and attended Weymouth College. In 1914 he joined the navy and served throughout World War One; after the war he found it difficult to adjust to civilian life and, among other professions, tried his hand at farming. His greatest passion was model making, being self taught in art and anatomy, and it was whilst staying with family in Sussex in the early 1920??s that he met Dr F.A. Bather, Keeper of Geology at the British Museum. Dr. Bather was impressed by the detailed and accurate models that Edwards was producing and asked him to produce a series of prehistoric models for the British Museum (Natural History), now known as the Natural History Museum. Vernon Edwards was given access to the museum's collections and scientific monographs, so the models he produced were up to date reconstructions which were then authenticated by Dr. Bather and later by Dr. W.E. Swinton for scientific accuracy. His major work for the Museum was a series of dioramas which graced the 'Fossil Fish' gallery until the late 1970?s. The models proved to be very popular and many museums around the world would order them to highlight their growing and increasingly popular collections of paleontological specimens; the largest collections in the UK can now be found in Bolton Museum and the Horniman Museum, London. At this time Edward’s work would also go on to be used for cigarette cards, as well as appearing in many popular magazines, such as? ??The Illustrated London News??? and ???The Listener?,?? but it was the publication of ??The Dinosaurs: A Short History of a Great Group of Extinct Reptiles,?? by W.E. Swinton, the first ?serious d?inosaur book ever produced, that would place his work at the forefront of academic and popular imagination. Commercial production of the models was time-consuming, which made the models expensive, so very few were produced other than for museums. Being of plaster they were also fragile, so very few outside well-conserved museum collections survive undamaged. The items in this collection are a selection of original sketches? and paintings? by Vernon Edwards, master models from which moulds were taken, and stock models produced for sale by Gregory Bottley & Co. M.E. Howgate M.Sc. FLS? (Authority on Vernon Edwards) [10, No Reserve] Fine condition.

1986 BMW 628 CSIRegistration no. C894 WDGChassis no. WBAEA820108165522Odometer: 71000MOT: 14/10/2020*Good History File*Runs and Drives Well*Comes with current MoTThe 6-series was BMW's XJ-S challenger, and today its popularity continues unabated as it remains a first-rate latter-day classic that is capable of daily use and covering high mileages. MPH's 628CSi has some service history (there are several BMW dealer service stamps in the book) and, overall, presents well. The bodywork and silver metallic paint is good, the panel fit good too and our vendor notes with a little effort this '6' could be made into an excellent example. 6-series interiors were always elegantly functional and this car's – more unusually in blue – has leather seats and is all original but remains in good order. Engine-wise it starts and runs well, and the engine bay is tidy. Running gear is also good. Keenly estimated this 628CSi looks good value and has scope for the new owner to add their mark. Please click the link to view the walkaround video of this lot: click hereFootnotes:Vendor Score Total: 67/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. Three Fans: The first, circa 1890's, a large painted fan with double paper leaf, a restful scene of a courting couple seated in a clearing, the lady holding possibly a book, her beau leaning in closely and attentively. The pink Mother of Pearl monture is plain, fitted with a gold metal loop and elaborately knotted cream silk tassel. The verso is plain. Guard length 12.5 inches or 32cm. Together with an early 20th century bone fan, the monture lightly carved and pierced, the double leaf being painted with flowers to the cream silk satin recto, the cotton verso being plain. Fitted with an embossed and shaped metal loop and a cream silk tassel decorated with gold thread. Guard length 9.5 inches or 24cm. Finally, an early 20th century sequinned fan, the gauze leaf mounted on gilded celluloid, further piqué with silver dots. The sequins embroidered in swags and ribbons in rose gold and silver. The verso is plain. Guard length 8.25 inches or 21cm. Together with Romance in the Countryside: two fans, the first early 20th century, printed on fabric in the Watteau style, with wealthy and grandly dressed couples gathering in the grounds of a large country house, at leisure. The bone monture is gently incised and gilded. Guard length 7.25 inches or 18.5cm. A mid-19th century bone fan, the monture carved, pierced, and gilded, the double paper leaf lithographed with winged cherubs mingling with a group of ladies and gentlemen, the central figures having made a floral garland being used by one cherub as a swing. The verso is plain. Guard length 10.5 inches or 27cm (5) CONDITION REPORT: . 1890's fan: Good colour and painting. However, the leaf has damage to the left side, where two folds have been slightly damp and stuck, thus tearing when opened. The paper to fill the hole is present, still stuck. One tiny pinhole noted nearer the centre bottom of the leaf. The monture and tassel are sound. The satin fan is slightly crumpled with one pale mark right of centre near the top border. The backing fabric on the sequin fan is splitting but the recto is sound. Fan 4, two of the folds are slightly strained but holding. The earlier fan has damage, the leaf having a bad split to a fold at the left, some upper leaf crumpling, and the middle section of the upper guard is missing, this accident having also dislodged the first stick in.
