* WWII - Eisenhower vs. Montgomery. Soldier of Democracy, a Biography of Dwight Eisenhower by Kenneth S. Davis, 1st ed., New York, 1945, ownership signature of Sir Patrick Ashley Cooper to half-title and again in pencil to title (‘“Queen Mary” at Sea, Nov. 1945’), map endpapers, orig. cloth, a little rubbed, 8vo, together with three autograph letters to Cooper from Sir Ronald Weekes (31st December 1945?), 2 pp., Field Marshall Montgomery, Headquarters, British Army of the Rhine, 24th January 1946, 4 pp., and Viscount Alanbrooke, 31st December 1949, 6 pp., the first tipped on to front pastedown at upper margin, second tipped on to front f.e.p. with a gummed paper slip attaching the two sheets, the third loose, all 8vo. All three letters are letters of thanks to Ashley Cooper for lending them the book and while each writer enjoyed the book and felt it had merits, they all believe that the British are not given enough credit and that Eisenhower’s abilities and achievements are exaggerated. The letter from Montgomery is marked private and reads in full: ‘Dear Cooper, thank you so very much for lending me this book. I have been laid up with influenza and have read it in bed with great interest. It is a great pity that the author in his endeavours to “write up” Ike has found in necessary to decry everything British. A British author might well reply that all Eisenhower’s fighting was handled for him by British Commanders: which is literally true. It was only when Ike, flushed by victory, descended from the lofty perch of a Supreme Commander and took tactical command himself of the armies, that our troubles began. The author is indeed ungenerous to British soldiers throughout his book; he even blames them for the fact that some Germans escaped from the Falaise pocket! For his remarks about myself, I care nothing; I could refute everything he says by written evidence; but his ungenerous attitude to British arms is a pity as some British author is bound to write a counter-blast: which would be a worse pity! Ike was a great Supreme Commander, and should be recognised as such. But in order to assign to him qualities that he does not possess, the author has had to put an entirely false complexion on many things. It would be perfectly simple to prove this “false complexion” but this must never be done. Of one thing I am convinced: we and America have got to come together, definitely, conclusively, and perpetually. Once we can achieve this, all will be well in the world. I think it can be achieved if we set about it in the right way. But we shall achieve nothing if we start emitting boohs about each other. All this is of course private. Thank you again for letting me read the book. Yours sincerely, B.L. Montgomery, Field-Marshall’. (4)

Eliot (George, i.e. Marian Evans). Scenes of Clerical Life, 2 vols., 1st ed., William Blackwood, 1858, half titles present (with contemp. ms. inscription), stitching strained, and first vol. with a number of leaves detached, orig. blindstamped maroon cloth gilt, by Edmonds & Remnants, with binder’s ticket on rear pastedown of first vol., extrems. lightly rubbed (and spine ends just beginning to fray), spines faded, 8vo. Sadleir 818; Wolff 2062. This, the author’s first book, comprises three tales which first appeared in Blackwood’s Magazine in 1857: ‘The Sad Fortunes of the Reverend Amos Barton’, ‘Mr Gilfil’s Love-Story’ and ‘Janet’s Repentance’. The stories were widely praised for their domestic realism, pathos and humour, and Dickens himself was full of admiration for Eliot’s writings, prompting much speculation about the identity of the author, who was widely supposed to be a clergyman or a clergyman’s wife. George Eliot’s rarest book and particularly so in the original cloth. (1)

Lot 469

[Taylor, Jane & Ann]. Signor Topsy-Turvey’s Wonderful Magic Lantern; or, The World turned upside down... Illustrated with Twenty-Four Engravings, 1st ed., printed for Tabart & Co. at the Juvenile and School Library, 1810, pp.71+[1](ads.), eng. frontis. (close-trimmed at top edge clipping image), and twenty-three eng. plts., contents generally browned, and small stain to fore-margin throughout (just clipping edge of images/text in places), a few short edge tears/nicks, mid. 19th c. half calf gilt, lightly rubbed and spine faded, 16mo. Gumuchian 5517; Moon, Benjamin Tabart’s Juvenile Library, 171(1). Extremely rare. Not in Osborne. A curious and amusing little book, which Marjorie Moon calls “an excellent production”. She adds “the verses are neat, pointed and (as may be expected, considering the authors) easily to be understood by children” and she describes the plates (possibly by Isaac Taylor, junior) as “among the more proficient illustrations in children’s books of the period”. The imaginative engravings and accompanying verse are apparently the result of the Magic Lantern operator’s ineptitude as he shows slides upside down, causing humorous reversals of standard roles, such as: ‘Monkey turned Beau’; ‘The Dunce turned Scholar’; ‘The Boy turned Giant’; ‘The Ass turned Miller’; ‘Game turned Sportsman’; ‘Fish out of Water’; ‘The Moon in the Dumps’; and ‘The Horse turned Driver’. In some cases the ludicrous takes on a rather alarming tone, for example, ‘The Cook Cooked’ shows the cook being roasted on a spit by a hare, ‘The Mare turned Farrier’ shows a horse hammering a nail into the farrier’s foot, and ‘The Hogs Court of Inquiry’ shows a number of bewigged hogs presiding over a butcher with bound limbs. Apart from a partial American reprinting in 1811, the book was never published again, in stark contrast to the rest of the Taylor sister’s oeuvre. This may have been in part because Benjamin Tabart was declared bankrupt in 1810, though it still seems surpring that the work was not taken up by another publisher. It seems probable that, despite the moralistic tone of some of the tales, the over-riding theme of anarchy - more subversive than the standard content of early nineteenth century children’s literature - was just too much for contemporary audiences. Gray (Henry). Anatomy, Descriptive and Surgical, 1st ed., 1858, half-title inscribed in contemp. ms. ‘With the Publishers’ Compts’, numerous letterpress engs. by H.V. Carter, pubs. ad. leaf at rear, title-page with early ms. ownership name at head, with portion of blank margin above torn away, occn. minor spotting and off-setting, hinges split, orig. blind-panelled cloth gilt, lightly soiled, extrems. frayed, large 8vo. Garrison Morton 418. The rare first edition of this classic medical text, which has been more widely used by successive generations of medical students and doctors than any other. Celebrated physician Henry Gray (1827-1861) was chiefly engaged in anatomical research and teaching at St. George’s Hospital in London. The ambitious and ebullient surgeon performed the dissections required for the book with his shy and retiring colleague, Henry Vandyke Carter, who provided the exquisitely detailed drawings. On publication the book was immediately acclaimed for its simple layout and clarity. Carter’s hand in its success has always been somewhat overlooked, and indeed, Gray himself requested that Carter’s name appear in smaller print than his own on the title-page. However, Gray died suddenly of smallpox at the age of 34, whereas Carter went on to achieve some modest acclaim for his medical research amongst the poorest people in India. (1)
