Marks, 1770, 4th edition, 10 engraved plates as called for, xi,264pp., contemporary calf, morocco gilt label to spine, armorial book plate of George Fairholme of Greenknowe. His father, William Fairholme (mother Elizabeth) made his living from banking and was a serious art collector. Nothing is known of George's childhood years and there is no record of his attending any university. But he was probably tutored at home and self-taught in keeping with his family’s wealthy financial situation. In 1800 an uncle bequeathed to him the Greenknowe estate (5000 plus acres) near Gordon, Berwickshire. Like many in his day he used his wealth to pursue his study of geology both in Britain and in Europe. On 15 November 1818 he married Caroline Forbes, who was the eldest daughter of the eighteenth Lord Forbes and granddaughter of the sixth Duke of Atholl. They lived in Perth; Greenknowe; Berne, Switzerland; Brussels; Ramsgate, Kent; and many other locations in Europe. They had five children, William, James (a naval officer lost on the Franklin Expedition), George, Charles and Elizabeth Marjory. George died in November 1846 in Royal Leamington Spa, willing homes, paintings and nearly 3000 pounds to each child. From the estate of George Fairholme, provenance by descent (2)

Interior designer John Beresford Fowler CBE (1906–1977) joined the decorating and antiques firm Thornton Smith, where he painted Chinese-style wallpaper (sold as 18th century originals), and learned other paint decoration techniques, such as marbling and graining, and subsequently decorated furniture for Peter Jones. He established his own business on the Kings Road in Chelsea in 1934, and then went into business with Sybil Colefax, founding Colefax & Fowler. Nancy Lancaster employed him to help with the decoration of her own rooms but became fascinated with decoration herself. At the end of World War II she bought the firm that became Colefax and Fowler from the retiring Colefax. He leased the Hunting Lodge at Odiham in Hampshire from the National Trust in 1947, and his simple but elegant decorative scheme made a great impact. Fowler was involved in the redecoration of dozens of substantial country houses and town houses, including Radbourne Hall, Daylesford House, Tyninghame House and Grimsthorpe Castle. He also worked on decorative schemes for Buckingham Palace, Holyroodhouse, Chequers, Chevening, Christ Church, Oxford, and the Bank of England. In the 1960s and '70s Fowler was still engaged in major commercial projects but increasingly preferred to work with the National Trust. By the time of his death in 1977, at the age of 71, John Fowler was recognized as the éminence grise of English decoration.Georgine Fairholme was born in London, 18 August 1927, and attended St Martin’s School of Art in London. She subsequently worked at interior designer Joy King’s Elizabeth Eaton shop in Belgravia before joining the esteemed London firm Colefax & Fowler in 1964, where she became a protégé of decorator John Fowler, founder of the firm. She re-located to New York to work in the firm’s Manhattan office and later joined Rose Cumming, in whose studio she presumably met the designer Harrison Cultra (1941-1983.) Together they formed the Cultra-Fairholme partnership, clients included Richard H. Jenrette and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis amongst others. Following the dissolution of the partnership, in 1978 she opened her own firm in New York City in a fiercely competitive sector but ran a book with many famous and notable clients including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon as well as Mr. and Mrs. John Hay “Jock” Whitney. In 1986, Architectural Digest called Fairholme the “doyenne of English Country Style.” In addition to designing interiors, she designed furniture, china, fabrics and wall coverings. On retirement she moved to Italy thence for the last 17 years of her life to Lavenham, Suffolk. She died in Bury St Edmunds 27 August 2019 – soon after her 92nd birthday. Provenance by descent

Jacqueline Lee Kennedy Onassis (née Bouvier, 1929–1994) was an American socialite, writer, photographer, and book editor who served as the first lady of the United States from 1961 to 1963, as the wife of President John F. Kennedy. A popular first lady, she endeared the American public with her devotion to her family, dedication to the historic preservation of the White House, the campaigns she led to preserve and restore historic landmarks and architecture along with her interest in American history, culture and arts. During her lifetime, she was regarded as an international icon for her unique fashion choices, and her work as a cultural ambassador of the United States made her very popular globally. After the assassination and funeral of her husband in 1963, Kennedy and her children largely withdrew from public view. In 1968, she married Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, which caused controversy. Following Onassis's death in 1975, she had a career as a book editor in New York City, first at Viking Press and then at Doubleday, and worked to restore her public image. Even after her death, she ranks as one of the most popular and recognizable first ladies in American history, and in 1999, she was listed as one of Gallup's Most-Admired Men and Women of the 20th century. She died in 1994 and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery alongside John F. Kennedy and the two children who had predeceased them. Georgine Fairholme was born in London, 18 August 1927, and attended St Martin’s School of Art in London. She subsequently worked at interior designer Joy King’s Elizabeth Eaton shop in Belgravia before joining the esteemed London firm Colefax & Fowler in 1964, where she became a protégé of decorator John Fowler, founder of the firm. A scarce 1936 Berlin Olympics commemorative book produced by the Icelandic company O. Johnson & Kaaber, 'Hinir XI. Olympisku Leikar I Berlin 1936', containing 138 tipped in colour illustrations from photographs of athletes competing in the games, various elements of the ceromonies and stadia, various dignitaries, many of them Third Reich, etc., athletes pictured include Jesse Owens, Archie Williams, Gunnar Hockert, Harald Whitlock, Forest Towns, Glen Hardin, Naoto Tajima, Lutz Long, Tilly Fleischer, Helen Stephens, Franco Riccardi, Louis Hostin etc etc, oblong 4to (27 x 33cm), original quarter cloth. The Reykjavik wholesale company O. Johnson & Kaaber was formed in 1906 and predominantly imported and produced coffee and ersatz coffee in the 1930's, as well as exporting a few items such as wool, lamb hides and cod liver oil. During the 1930's the British government was alarmed by Germany's growing interest in Iceland. When WWII began, the Kingdom of Iceland declared itself to be neutral, however it did not closely enforce limitations within its territorial waters and even slashed funding for the Icelandic Coast Guard, and many Axis merchant vessels sought shelter within the neutral waters around Iceland. The German diplomatic presence in Iceland, along with the island's strategic importance, alarmed the British, and after a few failed diplomatic attempts to persuade the Icelandic government to join the Allies, the British invaded Iceland on 10 May 1940, one month after the German invasion of Denmark.

Alexander Trocchi: 'Cain's Book', London, John Calder, 1963, 1st UK edition, signed and inscribed on FFEP, original cloth gilt, dust wrapper (25s price intact). Controversial novel about heroin addiction by the Scottish beat writer Alexander Trocchi. A roman à clef, it details the life of Joe Necchi, a heroin addict and writer, who is living and working on a scow (cargo boat) on the Hudson River in New York. The book alternates between Necchi/Trocchi's attempts to score and flashbacks to his experiences as a child in Glasgow, and later as a young man in London and Paris. It is also an account of what it means to be a junky and an outsider from society. It describes with an eye for detail the rituals of heroin, the cooking up and the search for a suitable vein, in a visceral way that surpasses even William Burroughs. In April 1964 the UK edition went to trial for obscenity, with six defense witnesses testifying to its literary value. The case is notable in that the court's judgement was the first in the UK to condemn a book for obscenity not for sexual content but for "the lifestyle it advocated." In response to the unfavorable verdict Trocchi held a public burning of his book, with fireworks. In the 1950's Trocchi was a prominent member of the avant garde Paris literary scene, establishing the influential and now highly collectible Merlin magazine, which ran for five years and 11 issues, publishing many of the last great names of Modernism. 'Cain's Book' was his last great work, after which Trocchi lost his powers of productivity and lived the life of a refractory addict. John Calder, the publisher of Cain's Book wrote, "he is … a lost writer … lost because of heroin. I've known many drug addicts, [and] I've known nobody who was able to cope with it as well as Trocchi, but it killed his talent..."

Vivienne Westwood & Malcolm McLaren: An 'Anarchist Punk Gang' Seditionaries Muslin Shirtc.1979/80,in white muslin, front with black, green and red printed design, Malcolm McLaren Vivienne Westwood Seditionaries Personal Collection label stitched within the fabric lower right (now moved due to stitching coming away), with D-ring to each shoulder, and D-ring and dog-clip to each long sleeve, accompanied by a letter of provenanceFootnotes:ProvenanceOffered by the vendor who purchased it at the time of creation.'Anarchist Punk Gang', or as it is also known 'The One Per Centers', is one of the final, and darkest, designs by Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood to be introduced at Seditionaries. In 1979 McLaren regularly spent time away from London in Paris and later said that while he approved the design, Westwood was principally responsible for the genesis and realisation. The bleakness of the artwork not only reflects the beleaguered state of affairs experienced by the pair and their coterie but also acts as a memoriam for Sex Pistols bass-player Sid Vicious, who had died in February 1979 from a heroin overdose. The Pistols, around whom McLaren and Westwood's design work revolved from 1976, split up at the beginning of 1978 and in October that year, Vicious had been arrested in New York for the murder of his partner Nancy Spungen. His death four months later coincided with the commencement of an extremely acrimonious court case brought against Pistols manager McLaren by the surviving members of the group with the backing of Richard Branson's record company Virgin Records. Since Punk had gone overground, Seditionaries was by this time regularly closed as a result of it being vandalised and graffiti-ed by passing punks and football hooligans, while members of the staff pilfered stock to fund their drug habits. The appropriately death-cult design takes its text and imagery from Hell's Angels biker gangs, and features a skull at the centre surrounded by the phrase 'As You Were I Was As I Am You Will Be.' This derives from a graffiti scrawl attributed to Heinrich Himmler the gonzo writer Hunter S. Thompson included as a chapter heading in his 1966 book Hell's Angels. The skull is positioned between two banners, with all text in so-called 'blackmail' lettering as if cut out of newspaper headlines, just as in the Sex Pistols band logo, 3 and both feature the encircled capital 'A' anarchy sign which first appeared as a radical political symbol in the 1860s as a protest design of the International Workingmen's' Association of Spain. One flagpole is emblazoned '1%' above the statement 'Anarchist Punk Gang'; in contrast, the other carries a quote from a recording of Vicious in an interview circulated after his death: '99% is shit.' This appears above the slogan: 'Create hell and get away with it.' Underneath the red, green and black vector bearing the skull is the statement: 'The barrier between friend and foe is thin 'At certain times of day there are only us.' This is from a quote by a biker in Raymond C. Morgan's book Angels Do Not Forget, which was published in the summer of 1979. The final statement in the design announces: 'We're the 1% who don't fit and don't care.' As well as looping back to Vicious's original statement, this quotes from the chorus of the Pistols' anthem Pretty Vacant, which ends with Johnny Rotten declaring: 'And we don't care.' Note: the opposing texts '1%' and '99% is shit' are absent from this shirt due to the shoulder insets of the muslin design. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Butler Esq. with the writer's best wishes Sincerely Yours John Hall 6, 8, 23. This is a very interesting and unusual book. John Hall undertook a tour of The First World War battlefields in October 1921 accompanied by his son in law, Mr S G Wood. This book is his account of his travels and makes very interesting reading (unusually this auction cataloguer made the effort to find the time and read most of this book!). Mr Hall meets all sorts of characters and hires a car (called Henry) to transport him to various battlefield sites in France and Belgium. Mr Hall has a camera with him and takes photographs of the numerous places, people and sites that he visits including the British tank cemetery at Menin Road Ypres, Hell Fire Corner, Arras, Cafe St Pierre, a mine crater at Messines, Hooge Wood, Kemmel cemetery, Hop Store cemetery, Nieuport, Paris etc. Inside the book was a vintage presentation card with a Lest We Forget poem, a JH monogram and the address of Dunelm, 36 Spratt Hall Road, Wanstead, E11. An internet search could not find this book mentioned anywhere but an Estate claim notice in the East London Observer for Friday 28th July 1944 was found that notes John Hall died 3rd July 1944 late of 36 Spratt Hall Road, Wanstead. This is a fascinating and rare (possibly unique) book and measures approx 14cm x 21.5cm, 50 pages, hard back, nicely printed pages containing text and numerous interesting black and white photographs that have not been published elsewhere, no dust jacket, the book shows some light signs of age , wear and has some marks on the front and back covers otherwise is in very good condition (see photographs)Good condition. All autographs are genuine hand signed and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. UK postage from £5.99, EU from £7.99, Rest of World from £10

Fine Edwardian and later Naval Gallantry medal group - comprising George V Sea Gallantry medal, named to Harry Payne 'Volturno 9th October 1913', First World War 1914 - 1915 Star, War, Mercantile Marine and Victory medals, named to H. G. Payne S.T.D. M.F.A., Second World War 1939-1945 Star, Atlantic Star, Pacific Star and War medals (in box of issue, to H.G. Payne), together with Liverpool Shipwreck and Human Society Marine medal (bronze issue), C.Q.D. medal (silver issue). N.B. Awarded for those who went to the aid of the stricken 'White Star' Steamship Republic, 1909, the Lifesaving Benevolent Association of New York medal by Tiffany & Co. October 10th, 1913 and gold plated presentation watch. According to family legend, Londoner Harry fled to Liverpool after the horse he had borrowed was fatally wounded and he was too afraid to confront its owner! In Liverpool he joined the merchant navy, and so began his life at sea. On 23rd January 1909 the 32 year old Payne was serving as a steward aboard the White Star Line ship the SS Baltic, when a C.Q.D. (come quick danger) distress message was received from another White Star Line ship, the RMS Republic. The Republic had just been rammed in thick fog by an Italian ship the SS Florida. Upon receiving the distress signal at 6am, the Baltic steamed the 64 miles to the site of the collision to rescue the passengers from the stricken ship. The 64 mile trip turned into a 200 mile epic, as the Baltic zigzagged the area unable to find the stricken ships, finally located the crash site at 7pm that evening. Whilst the Baltic searched for the ships, the passengers onboard the Republic were transferred from to the less damaged Florida, with the Baltic finally rescuing the 1700 passengers and crew of the Republic. Miraculously only four sailors and two passengers were killed during the accident. The accident also marked the first time that wireless telegraphy played a role in saving lives at sea. The SS Republic finally succumbed to the damage it sustained in the collision, sinking on 24th January 1909. Its rumoured cargo included gold destined for the Tsar of Russia, a five tonne shipment of American gold coins and funds destined for victims of the Messina earthquake. A considerable haul valued at $100 million dollars in todays money. For his part in the rescue Harry Payne was awarded the C.Q.D. Gallantry medal. Four years after the Republic crash, Payne was one again serving as a steward, this time on the Cunard Liner the SS Carmania. It was at this time he was thrust into danger once more, with his acts of bravery on the 10th October 1913 earning him multiple awards for his gallantry. The SS Volturno was sailing in the North Atlantic in October 1913, when its cargo of flammable chemicals ignited during a gale. The subsequent fire caused an explosion, with the inferno spreading further to the ships coal bunkers, eventually cutting power to the fire pumps. The situation was desperate, and the SOS distress call was given. Harry Payne’s ship the SS Carmania was the first to arrive at the scene. In the meantime the striken Volturno launched several lifeboats, which were either capsized or smashed by the Voltuno’s own hull, leaving no survivors. It was into this scene of desperation that Harry Payne found himself, in a gale, with the burning Voltuno and the shattered remains of its lifeboats all around. He and nine others from the Carmania were lowered into the wild sea in a rowing lifeboat and for 3 hours the brave men of the Carmania battled to reach the wreck of the Voltuno. When they eventually returned to their own ship, 7 of their 10 oars were lost and the crew was exhausted. As the sea mercifully began to calm, the Carmania and the other ships that had joined the rescue began to pick up the survivors, with 521 crew members and passengers rescued. Sadly 135 mostly women and children perished but had it not been for the efforts of Harry Payne and his fellow crew then the death toll would have been much higher. His extreme gallantry was recognised with the awarding of the Sea Gallantry medal. The medal presented to him by King George V at St James’s Palace in 1914. He was further recognised with the awarding of The Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society medal and was even awarded a gold plated pocket watch by the catering department of his own ship! Whilst on the other side of the Atlantic The Life Saving Benevolent Association of New York awarded him a bronze medal minted by Tiffany & Co. As the First World War broke out Harry Payne’s life at sea continued, with him serving as a steward for the Merchant Fleet Auxiliary, adding a 1914 - 15 Star, British War medal, Mercantile Marine War medal and Victory medal to the four gallantry medals he had already been awarded. During the Second World War despite being the ripe old age of 62 at the start of the conflict, Payne once again served, adding the 1939 - 1945 Star, Atlantic Star, Pacific Star and War medal to his splendid array of medals. Harry Gainsford Payne’s amazing group of medals will be sold on Tuesday 28th November 2023. Included along with the medals themselves is the gold plated watch he was awarded following the Volturno rescue, various period newspaper clippings, a photograph of him wearing just a few of his decorations and a copy the book ‘The Burning of the Volturno. The collection is estimated at £2,000 - 3,000.

Friedrich Benedict Carpzow Bibliotheca Carpzoviana sive catalogus librorum. 2 Bände in 1. Leipzig, A. Zeidler 1700. Gedichte. Wien, A. Sexl 1948. While there were some technical similarities to their predecessors, the new models were larger in wheelbase and exterior dimensions. The styling was also updated, although stylistic links with the W114/W115 were maintained. Initially, all models except 280/280E featured quad unequal-size round headlights and the latter large rectangular units. When face lifted these units became standard across the range. All W115 engines were carried over. It is a tribute to the car's instant popularity and possibly to the caution built into the production schedules that nine months after its introduction, a black market had developed in Germany for Mercedes-Benz W123's available for immediate delivery. Customers willing to order new cars from their local authorised dealer for the recommended list price faced waiting times in excess of twelve months. This 'time warp' example of this popular saloon is presented in superb totally original condition, unrestored and in what could be described as museum quality throughout. Its cream paintwork is amazing, its tan interior is exemplary particularly as its totally original and it comes with automatic transmission. This truly stunning example comes with lots of history of receipts from Mercedes-Benz, original and stamped service book, its original build sheet, three sets of keys, original and unused first aid kit (unopened). It also has its original toolkit and spare wheel, many old MoT test certificates and the present owner has fitted a new fuel pump and fuel relay. This has to be one of the most original examples of this hugely desirable and popular saloon model of its era and in this museum quality condition, surely must be one for the collector.

1980 Volkswagen Scirocco GLS Transmission: manualMileage:23377The Scirocco is a three-door coupé that underwent two generations of development between 1974 and 1992 before being re-introduced for a third generation in August 2008. Volkswagen began work on the car during the early 1970's as the replacement for the ageing Karmann Ghia coupé. The platform of the Golf and Jetta was used to underpin the new Scirocco, although almost every part of the car was re-engineered in favour of a sportier drive and the model's all-new styling resulted in a sleeker and sportier car than either the Golf or Jetta. This example was purchased new by our vendors late father-in-law in May 1980 for the princely sum of £5,015 from Barnett & Small Ltd Volkswagen in Surrey. The car was then only used on nice days and special occasions and has lived in the same garage for the past 43 years, apart from a short spell in our vendors garage when he first became the owner of the car. Having covered such few miles, the car is in excellent condition throughout and has been maintained almost exclusively by the supplying dealer. The service book contains nine stamps from Barnett & Small Ltd up until 1990, by which point the car had covered 20,458 miles, all with supporting invoices. The car was then serviced by Rowledge Garage in 2003 at 21,819 miles and in 2005 at 22,402 miles. Following that, the car was mostly kept off the road in storage, until it was taken back to Rowledge Garage in November 2021 at 22,976 miles for a major service including fuel hoses, cambelt, brake hoses, alternator belt and tyres, the bill totalling over £2,000.The car is now offered to sale with an excellent history file including many invoices, all owner's books and manuals, an original brochure and even a written log of every single fuel station visit the car had up until August 2008. This is likely one of the very best surviving Scirocco GLS' of which only 51 are currently registered on the road in the UK (according to 'how many left'). Offered without reserve, this car would be the perfect addition to any Volkswagen collection.Guide price: £8,000-£12,000

1974 DAF Marathon 66 Transmission: automaticMileage:22557The DAF Marathon 66 was produced by the Dutch car manufacturer, DAF, from 1972 to 1976. The DAF Marathon was designed by the legendary car designer Giovanni Michelotti. The DAF Marathon 66 was powered by either a reworked 1108cc, or 1289cc Renault engine. The DAF Marathon was praised for its excellent handling and roadholding. It featured an independent suspension system with MacPherson struts up front and a semi-trailing arm setup at the rear. This setup provided excellent cornering stability and a smooth ride. The car also featured a power-assisted steering system that provided good feedback and accurate steering. The DAF Marathon was well-received by enthusiasts and the press alike. It was praised for its interior, excellent handling, and powerful engine. It is a comfortable and stylish car that is still popular with collectors today. This rare DAF Marathon was purchased by a Mr. Binns of Bournemouth from Four Square Garage Ltd in 1974. The original order form shows that he paid the princely sum of £1,590.44 for the DAF. He retained the car for the next 20 years until he passed away in 1974. It was Mr. Binns' wish for the car to be put on view at the Christchurch Motor Museum. It stayed with them until the museum was shut. This charming coupé was recommissioned in 2013 and has been owned by our vendor since then. Presented to auction with a history file containing the original order form, service book, sales brochures, past MoT test certificates and various service receipts. This wonderfully original example from the 1970's would be a funky addition to any collection.Interested parties should note that the brakes on this car will require some attention before this car can be driven.

2003 Mercedes-Benz CL55 Kompressor AMG Transmission: automaticMileage:12919The name CL stands for the German 'Coupé Leicht' or Coupé Light. The CL-Class is based on the S-Class full-size luxury car known at first as the SEC and later S coupé. It was spun off into its own, current name in 1996 and in 1997 for North American markets. The CL continued to follow the same development cycle as the S, although riding on a shorter wheelbase and sharing the same engines, albeit with less choice, as only the higher-output power trains were offered. The second generation CL or the W215 chassis coupé of 2000-2006 came in various guises with this example being the supercharged V8-powered CL55 AMG. It came equipped with the very latest in Mercedes-Benz technology and, along with the S-Class saloons; the CL coupés received all new technological features.Purchased from new on 15th May 2005 by our vendor, this incredibly low mileage example of the supercharged V8 powered CL55 AMG Kompressor which possesses 493bhp and is capable of 0-60 in 4.8 seconds cost £98,564 new. Specified with £5,674 of options including radar assist cruise control, keyless go, a TV tuner in front, Nokia 6210 WAP phone, 19" AMG alloy wheels, electric rear roller blind and Linguatronic. Presented in metallic silver with a black leather trim this example has covered a mere 12,919 miles with much of its recent life dry stored in the vendors garage alongside its sister SL55. Recently recommissioned with an oil and filter change, new fuel pump, new battery and new fluids this example represents a rare opportunity to own a modern classic coupé with supercar credentials. Offered with the original book pack and service booklet showing two early services stamped in 2004 and 2009 with Mercedes-Benz dealers, the last at 12,860. This Mercedes comes to auction without reserve with and MoT certificate until November 2024 and viewing is highly recommended.Guide Price £15,000-£20,000Interested parties should note that this example has been stored for some 10 years. Although recently recommissioned this example is still on its original tyres which we would recommend replacing.

1989 Maserati Bi-Turbo 222SE Transmission: manualMileage:39666There is no denying as the 1980's arrived the name 'Maserati' was in a dark place, first Citroën then De Tomaso sought to raise the once great marque back into the public eye. The Bi-Turbo took the brand in a totally different direction and although it raised eyebrows among established clientele the Bi-Turbo would boost production and sold in very large numbers, especially in the States. Initially, the Pierangelo Andreani design offered just 180bhp from its all new compact 90-degree V6 with a three-valve cylinder head design. The adoption of two small turbochargers was the world's first on a production car, as was the Torsen limited-slip rear differential. Development ensured performance would improve as capacity increased to 2.5 litres in 1985 then to 2.8 litre two years later at which time 250bhp was available. The export version enjoyed an update in 1988 with the 222E and SE, these enjoyed the high performance 2790cc unit which was retained until the Bi-Turbo was finally phased out in 1993.This lovely example is one of the last (August 1989) export options, complete with the larger power unit and generally acknowledged to have benefitted from a much-improved build quality compared with models offered a decade previously. The vendor knows this 222SE very well having purchased the car in 2001, after which he carried out a full 'heart and soul' restoration including replacement wings and doors with the Ice Blue metallic expertly applied courtesy of an Aston Martin specialist. Having travelled just 1,750 miles since completion in 2004 the finish remains perfect and impossible to fault. The history file is comprehensive carrying every invoice and MoT test certificate from 2001 to date, including a £4,000 invoice from Meridien Moderna which includes all belts, water pump, coolant, brake discs and pads plus four new 7J five stud alloy rims. The Bi-Turbo returned to our client in 2019 having been kept in a controlled environment for almost a decade and covering just 44 miles since its restoration. At this time the car was appraised by a classic car publication and the tester noted 'a total of a dozen warning lights are displayed as the ignition is engaged but once the V6 bursts into life, in theory all 12 go out; and in this case they did whilst the wonderful Maserati motor settles quickly. The 'dog-leg' gearbox takes some consideration, especially at junctions, as selecting normal first could result in a scare for the car behind. The performance clutch is firm and the gear change is slick allowing full use of the turbos which come in late and propel this Italian saloon with extreme enthusiasm. Our client informed us that the damp roads on a test ensured over-coming turbo lag was kept to a minimum; saying that the 222SE enjoyed uprated and lowered suspension offering minimal body roll and direct steering to complement very powerful brakes. As pointed out in the book Dream Cars by Chris Rees the Bi-Turbo cabin was made to feel very special, Briarwood and leather dominate with Alcantara dash top considered to be 'the cherry on the top'. In the world of interior trim, few vehicles can boast such flamboyance or attention to detail and this 222SE enjoys extras including climate control, electric windows plus a later Blaupunkt DJ31 radio cassette with CD changer control, which is somewhat made redundant thanks to the audio emitted by a custom-built stainless twin exhaust system. Carpets are as new, protected with over mats since fitted, also the seating offers minimal wear whilst the dash veneer is dominated by the traditional 'La Salle' gold Swiss timepiece. Maserati's website states just 722 of the 222SE models were built with stateside classic authority Hemmings confirming the 222 was the best Bi-Turbo model produced. We believe this example is as good as they come and welcome any inspection from enthusiasts seeking an Italian super coupé.

1931 Rolls-Royce 20 / 25 Sedanca De Ville by Windovers Transmission: manualMileage:57000First registered on 7th May 1931 and finished in pastel blue and black with black leather interior, GNS75 was initially ordered by J.J. Jones of 88 St. James's Street, London however the first owner was actually Hylton Ralph Murray-Philipson (Jnr) of Stobo Castle, Peebles. Stobo Castle had been purchased by Hylton Murray-Philipson Snr in 1905 and in 1924 he conveyed the estate to his son who was a pioneer aviator. Hylton's career consisted of being the C.O. of the City of Edinburgh Auxiliary Air Force Squadron, Conservative MP for Twickenham; Chairman of N.E. Marine Engineering Company and a member of the King's Bodyguard for Scotland and the Royal Company of Archers. Hylton Murray-Philipson suffered from ill health and died in 1934 aged 32 leaving GNS75 to his wife Monica and two young children. In 1939 Monica Murray-Philipson sold Stobo Castle to Wenefryde Agatha Scott, 10th Countess of Dysart and after 10 years of being a widow Monica married Colonel P.H. Lloyd of Stone House in Blaston. The Colonel and Murray-Philipson had business connections as they were both company directors of Manvers Main Collieries Ltd Murray-Philipson in 1923/33 and Lloyd in 1940/47. In 1943 GNS75 is shown as being with her second family, that of John Stanley Coombe Beard of Grayshott Hall, Surrey. John Beard was an architect well known for designing over 100 cinemas in many styles, Baroque, Art Deco, Italian Renaissance, Greek Revival and even Egyptian. Interestingly in 1937 Mrs Beard made call to the police about an attempted burglary which resulted in the first arrest directly attributable to the new 999 service.A rare, possibly unique and very attractively designed car incorporating many appealing features such as stylish wings, separate steps in place of running boards, slim bumpers, external visor and louvred bonnet and scuttle with beautifully proportioned coachwork. With a polished aluminium bonnet top and waistline and P80 'bullseye' headlamps with pillar spot lamp all adds to the overall gorgeous design with the incorporation of various Art Deco touches. This 20/25 allows you to instruct your chauffeur from the privacy of the rear passenger compartment with the interior dividing screen while keeping an eye on progress with your own speedometer which is naturally mounted atop the built-in drink's cabinet. Such unusual original features are what make this Rolls-Royce special, even the delightful Sedanca de Ville coachwork is rare with its split separate steps and Art Deco flourishes. The front compartment provides accommodation for the driver and a passenger with a removable roof section for open-air motoring and wind-up windows. The driver's window also featuring a quick release lower section to allow hand signals to be easily executed. A right hand gear change allows for plenty of legroom and the large steering wheel is surmounted by a collection of hand controls. A large bulb horn lies easily to hand and the windscreen can be opened for ventilation. It is shaded by a glass visor and a spot lamp is within the driver's reach. Gauges are also a feature of the rear passenger compartment, although separated by a dividing screen, the rear passengers can keep an eye on their own speedometer as well as being supplied with a clock, barometer and a circular thermometer. The clock, and possibly the barometer, appear to be later additions. The drinks cabinet has provision for holding several decanters and a few glasses in a Lazy Susan, although the glassware itself is no longer present. The leather upholstery looks to be in lovely condition throughout, exhibiting just the right amount of patina without looking tatty. The carpets, door cards and headlining are similarly well presented as are stylish Art Deco door handles and window winders, which place this Rolls-Royce squarely in the 1930s.To the exterior, the Palladian radiator surround is topped with the Spirit of Ecstasy and the long bonnet is flanked by twin side-mount spare wheels. A pair of large Lucas tripod headlamps illuminate the road ahead and are assisted by a centrally mounted spot lamp, as well as the swivelling spot lamp near the driver. Twin horns complete the scene at the front of the car, along with a polished chrome-plated bumper. The Windovers Sedanca de Ville coachwork suits the car well and is beautifully proportioned. It features the unusual running boards, separate for front and rear passengers, as well as a useful luggage boot to the rear. Polished aluminium discs cover the wire wheels and the car runs on a full set of Paymaster tyres. Lifting the long bonnet reveals the powerful, straight-six, 3.7 litre engine. The engine features coil ignition and is fed by an Autovac fuel pump and, unusually for a car of this period, there is a glass bottle of screen wash mounted on the bulkhead, which is likely to be a later addition coupled to a small modern electric pump which has been added for ease of use. Supplied with a history file which includes historic photographs of restoration, instruction book and the original buff logbook coupled to the V5C registration document and copies of handwritten service records. The vendor informs us that the engine starts up easily every time and runs well. It is said to be a joy to drive and mechanically sound with its overhead valves, four-speed gearbox and powerful engine, this Rolls-Royce is certainly very capable and splendidly opulent. An imposing motorcar, which wears fabulously unusual coachwork and retains many original details.

1996 Porsche 911 / 993 Carrera 2 Transmission: manualMileage:67155The Porsche 993 was introduced in 1993 as a replacement for the 964 generation of the iconic 911 model and was built until 1998. Regarded by many as the best generation of 911s ever produced from Stuttgart, this car was the last to use the air-cooled flat-six engine that had powered 911s for the previous thirty years. The 993 was offered in a number of guises and specifications during its production life including two and four-wheel drive trains, known as Carrera and Carrera 4 respectively. The 993 was the first generation 911 to have standard six-speed manual transmission. The Carrera, Carrera S, Cabriolet and Targa models (two-wheel drive) were also available with a Tiptronic four-speed automatic transmission which was first introduced in the 964. First delivered to Glenvarigill Porsche on 23rd March 1996, this fantastic 911 has led a pampered life. Ordered in Porsche in Midnight Blue metallic and with optional extras including 17" 'New Cup' design wheels, top tinted windscreen, rear wiper and sunroof. Unchanged from its factory ordered specification, this must be one of the best examples in existence. The car's history file shows all but one MoT test certificate from 2005 onwards, as well many receipts for maintenance carried out by well-regarded Porsche specialists as well as Porsche themselves. The included service book shows no less than 24 stamps in it, with another to be added before the auction. Since 2009, the car has been serviced with Porsche West Byfleet every year and was maintained by the likes of Paragon, Jaz and Northway Porsche prior. Supplied with a fresh MoT test certificate valid until October 2024, the car has covered just 10,656 miles in the vendor's 14-year ownership. Reported to run and drive just as you would expect a car of its pedigree to, it is now only being sold to thin out his collection. Supplied with V5C registration document, MoT test certificate valid until October 2024, service history file, service book along with all its handbooks in their original leather booklet case and previous MoT test certificates. This is a rare opportunity to own an unmodified, well optioned, manual example of this design classic, that was the evolutionary pinnacle of Porsche's legendary air-cooled flat-six. Interested parties should note that during the car’s service at Porsche Byfleet last month, a slight weep to one of the front shock absorbers was noted along with the rear lid gas struts were weakening. The vendor had Porsche Byfleet fit two new front shock absorbers as well as rear lid gas struts. The car was MoT’d at the same time. Please also note that the registration shown in the video does not come with the car. The car is sold with the registration P947 RBP.

Pavel Bryullovs genre painting Working Afternoon from 1890 represents a little field in western Ukraine at the time of the harvest season. The picture is like an open book, revealing the destinies of the heroes, revealing their past and predicting the future. This is a canvas, majestic in its size, grandiose, like life itself. A picturesque group of reapers rest in the shade of a haystack during half a working day. The entire spectrum of peasant life, womens destinies and shares, are open to the viewer. The picture covers the whole cycle of life: from girls already helping in the field to old women who have spent their whole lives in this field. It shows childhood, adolescence, youth, the birth of children, meeting old age and caring for grandchildren. Contrasting and multidirectional figures in the foreground symbolize the eternal ring of life. We see a boy, bleached by the sun, playing, and next to him is a tired old woman in a plaid skirt who is sleeping. Behind them, the girl reaches for her sisters jug. Nearby, a mother feeds her baby. Another young woman stretched out in her sleep, maintaining her strength. On the right, at the edge of the canvas, a young peasant woman braids her hair and directs her gaze to the girl in the center, who is the agent of the viewer, impressionistic contemplation and pleasure. Their gazes intersect on a compositional diagonal, which, alternating red and blue spots on the skirts, leads to the threshing scene. Where the girls, under the leadership of the headman, probably whose comma zipun was thrown on the front haystack, had already begun threshing. The circle of time closes, personifying the eternal and unchanging cyclical nature of life, in which the artist glorifies and romanticizes the atmosphere and people for whom harvesting is a true holiday and the meaning of life. Where, under the protection of God, whose churches can be seen in the depths of the picture, the villagers collect bread. Canvas, oil. 89 x 144 cm. Width: 194cm, Height: 138cm, Depth: 25cm, Weight: 80kg, Condition: Good, Material: Canvas, oil
