A CHINESE EXPORT BLACK AND GILT LACQUER CHEST MID 18TH CENTURY Decorated with landscapes with figures, sail-boats and dragons, the hinged top with an engraved gilt-brass lock and end-handles on an associated European stand 88cm high, 133cm wide, 63cm deep Condition Report: Generally good, structurally secure with wear and tear consistent with age and use. There are minor dents marks and scratches and shrinkage cracks. The lacquer with typical wear, scratches, gouges and pock-marks, with inevitable old cosmetic repairs so now patinated and coloured up to blend. There is wear to the front edge of the lid. The front panel in apparently rather good condition with an attractive scene, some overpainting to the bull's blood red border. The gilt-brass hasp, lock plate and side handles almost certainly replaced. The japanned stand of later date, with scratches and scuffing to the decoration. The feet apparently made in two parts and the front right with minor shrinkage split to the glue join (see additional image) but the sturdiness is uncompromised. A CHINESE CARVED HARDWOOD FIGURE OF IMMORTAL, EARLY 20TH CENTURY. The figure stood dressed in robes open at the chest, holding a staff with calligraphy brush and beads. Mounted on a later square base. 54.5cm tall. Some cracking to front of figure with some smaller surface cracks in places. No major losses and no signs of repairs.
