Of rectangular form, with a Fo dog and possibly a xiezhi between two elephant head handles above the shoulder, the body with panels depicting a lady and child at a table, a bird over flowering branches, and two narrow landscapes, all reserved against a yellow ground interspersed with peaches and flowers. She was also the Queen of the Chelsea Arts Ball in the 1920’s.

A Chinese gilt bronze censer and cover, late Ming Dynasty. Xuande mark, with elephant mask handles, the body with dragons amongst clouds in high relief, with pierced cover and scroll feet, height 15.5cm, width 19cm, depth 15.5cm.The Vandekar family established their internationally renowned antiques dealership in Amsterdam before moving to London in 1916. They specialized in the decorative arts of the 17th-20th century with a particular interest in 18th-19th century European and Chinese ceramics. In the 1970s and 80s, Michael Beard worked as a ceramics expert in the London showroom of Earle D. Vandekar of Knightsbridge, travelling internationally to trade shows and antiques fairs, and helping with the launch of the New York branch of Vandekar in 1982. There is no surprise that he leaves in his estate some beautiful examples of porcelain, ceramics, and objets d’art. When Michael retired to Cornwall around 1988 he settled at first in St Ives, where he became a prominent patron of the arts and a devoted member of the Old Cornwall Society. On his death he has left a collection boasting some fine examples of Cornish painting, sculpture, studio pottery, and decorative chinoiserie. No damages. Weight of censer body 1702 grams. A Chinese grisaille, iron-red and gilt 'Eighteen Arhats' plaque, 20th C.Work: ca. 30 x 22 cm Frame: 49,3 x 37 cm The Eighteen Arhats (or Luohan) (Chinese: åå…«ç¾…æ¼¢) are depicted in Chinese Buddhism as the original followers of Gautama Buddha (arhat) who have followed the Noble Eightfold Path and attained the four stages of enlightenment. They have reached the state of Nirvana and are free of worldly cravings. They are charged to protect the Buddhist faith and to wait on earth for the coming of Maitreya, an enlightened Buddha prophesied to arrive on earth many millennia after Gautama Buddha's death (parinirvana). In the Chinese tradition, the Eighteen Luohans are generally presented in the order they are said to have appeared to Guan Xiu, not according to their power: Deer Sitting, Happy, Raised Bowl, Raised Pagoda, Meditating, Oversea, Elephant Riding, Laughing Lion, Open Heart, Raised Hand, Thinking, Scratched Ear, Calico Bag, Plantain, Long Eyebrow, Doorman, Taming Dragon and Taming Tiger (link).
