A CHINESE CARVED AND FRETTED FRIEZE from a piece of furniture or screen, painted red and gilt 33 x 191cm

Lot 18

Maqbool Fida Husain (1915-2011)Untitled (Three Horses) signed 'Husain' lower right; further signed and dated '07 versofelt pen and acrylic on cardboard, framed90.5 x 58.8cm (35 5/8 x 23 1/8in).Footnotes:ProvenanceProperty from a private collection, Dubai.Acquired from the artist.'My horses like lightning, cut across many horizons. Seldom their hooves are shown. They hop around the spaces. From the battlefield of 'Karbala' to Baukura terra cota, from the Chinese Tse pei Hung horse to St. Marco horse, from ornate armoured 'Duldul' to challenging white of 'Ashwamedh' .... the cavalcade of my horses is multidimensional.' (Husain, Tata Steel Publications, 1987, p. 83)Horses figure prominently in Husain's work. The reasons for this are likely to be varied, though Husain notes that one of his earliest influences comes from the procession to commemorate the Prophet's grandson which involved the carrying of an effigy of his horse through the streets. The manner in which these horses are painted is reminiscent of a puppet or wooden effigy, strengthening the link with the Islamic holiday of the prophet's grandson. Additionally, Husain had worked in a children's toy and furniture factory during the 1940s and it is possible that many of his horse paintings draw heavily on the manner of the construction of puppet horses. Husain was also heavily influenced by the terracotta horses he saw during his visit to China. Since their domestication, horses have been important subjects for art and religion and have helped build civilizations, no less so in Hinduism. Husain was fascinated with his own roots but also learning and assimilating other cultures as sources of inspiration. As such this painting exemplifies this wonderfully: the horse as a symbol of power and tradition, a part of Islamic culture, an influence from China, and painted in a style reminiscent of European Cubism. 'All forms of art are born from one's roots', perhaps Husain wished to explore as many artistic roots as possible. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A PAIR OF GEORGE III STYLE MAHOGANY LIBRARY ARMCHAIRS AFTER THE DESIGN ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM VILE, PROBABLY 19TH CENTURY The rectangular padded backs, arms and seats upholstered in machine-made floral needlework, the arm supports carved with florets and with incised hatched trellis decoration, on square legs carved with similar hatched panels and wrapped with carved foliage, fruit and acorns on guttae feet and headed by pierced 'Chinese' angle brackets, with metal castors, the backs unusually low and possibly reduced in height 89cm high, 66cm wide, 68cm deep Provenance: Acquired August 1919, `A pair of fine Chippendale stuffed back chairs with carved arms & straight legs with raised fruit & flowers £300' The chairs feature distinctive foliate-wrapped legs carved with oblong trellis panels and guttae feet derived from the pattern for the celebrated drawing-room suite commissioned by Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 4th Earl of Shaftesbury (d. 1771) for St. Giles's House, Dorset, which originally comprised four settees and at least twenty-five open armchairs. For many years the manufacture of the suite was credited to Thomas Chippendale who illustrated such chairs which he described as being in the 'Modern' style in his Director, indeed, the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury (d. 1885) described the St Giles' furniture as being 'very valuable and fine, being by Chippendale'.  However, the suite is now attributed to William Vile (d. 1767), who worked with William Hallett (d. 1773) before receiving his appointment as 'cabinet-maker' to George III. Vile adopted guttae feet for the stools which he and his partner John Cobb supplied in 1753 for the Vyne, Hampshire (A. Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, London, 1968, p. 27, fig. 28). The attribution also derives from the superb and intricate carving of the suite corresponding to furnishings supplied by Vile and Cobb to George III and Queen Charlotte for Royal residences including St. James Palace and the Queen's House, now Buckingham Palace. A related suite of seat furniture in walnut, attributed to Vile, was at Harleyford Manor, Buckinghamshire, presumably supplied around 1760 to William Clayton (d.1783). The house was built from a design by the architect Sir Robert Taylor who pulled down an earlier house bought by Sir William Clayton, 1st Bt. (d.1744) and replaced it with the design that survives today. The Harleyford suite was sold from a private Eaton Square collection at Christie's, London, 2 May 2013, lots 79 (ten side chairs and a (pair of sofas), 80 (pair of stools) and 81 (single stool)  The ten chairs and sofas were sold again anonymously at Christie's, London, 17 March 2022, lots 11 and 13 respectively.

Zhang Zhoujie (Chinese, b.1985), a unique 'SQN5-T' coffee table, 2012, stainless steel, 130cm wide 75cm deep 36cm high Zhang Zhoujie grew up in rural China but went on to study Fine Art at the China Academy of Fine Art, the country’s leading specialised institution, before gaining an MA in Industrial Design at Central Saint Martin’s, London. In wanting to draw on these skills in a modern context, he explored the latest trends in parametric design - a digital scripting method which allows the user push the possibilities of man-made, fluid forms. He cites ‘wu wei’ which is a cornerstone of Taoism, as another guide in his work. ‘Wu Wei‘ means a lack of intervention and though his furniture is fully tuned to the logic of mathematics, he strives to blend traditional Chinese art perspectives with Western design methodology. His designs remain true to the materials he eventually chooses and he doesn’t embellish or disguise, preferring to exploit the relationships and interactions of faceted surfaces in the making of extraordinary but functional furniture.

Provenance: from an English private collection, Sussex.Small cabinets of this type, called guanpixiang or official boxes, were used both as dressing cases to store toiletries and as desks for stationery, writing implements and seals. Their construction with multiple drawers and trays resembles a cabinet rather than a box, and they were more often made in huanghuali or zitan. This piece is unusual in its materials and belongs to a small group of lacquer objects inlaid with hardstones and mother of pearl, a technique originally attributed to the Ming master carver Zhou Zhu, active in Yangzhou during the reign of the Jiajing emperor (1522-66). This term derives from its dimensions, being approximately half the size of an 'eight Immortal table' (八仙桌). A side table may function independently to display objects, serve as a complement to form an 'eight Immortal table' when paired, or extend the length of a square table. Compare with a similar huali table, 1550-1650, in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, illustrated by C.Clunas, Chinese Furniture, London, 1988, p.48, pl.33. This table embodies the elegant simplicity of the classical Ming style which perfects minimalism by using the least amount of material to achieve both maximum function and aesthetic pleasure. The aesthetic value of the present lot is further heightened by the intricate design of the leaves adorning the hoof feet. Compare with a very similar huanghuali waisted corner-leg side table with the similar decoration of leaves on the hoof feet, 17th century, which was sold at Christie's New York, 23 March 2012, lot 1733.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: W YW Lot is located in the Bonhams Warehouse and will only be available for collection from this location.Y Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the UK, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

His father was a Swedish businessman operating in Argentina and his mother Norwegian. He grew up in Germany but moved to Sweden when the Second World War broke out. In 1947 he was employed as an attaché in the Foreign Ministry and had placements in Washington D.C., Tokyo (late 1940s), Beijing (circa 1950-1953) and New York. In 1964–1967 he served as Ambassador in Kinshasa. Malm was appointed Head of Office at the Swedish Committee of Foreign Affairs in 1971, and in 1975 he was Inspector of the foreign administration and Head of Expedition/Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' administrative department 1978–1981. In 1981-1988 he was Ambassador in Vienna. After his retirement, he settled down in Södermanland. According to his life-partner, Hans Arvidson, the pair of cabinets was acquired when Mr Dag Malm was posted in Beijing.Cabinets of this style are commonly known as yuanjiaogui, or 'round-corner cabinets', and were highly esteemed by the literati during the Ming dynasty. The featured piece showcases the ingenious and aesthetically pleasing design characteristic of classical Chinese furniture, achieved through the skilful integration of flat surfaces and rounded elements, as well as the incorporation of four recessed stiles gently sloping outward from the top corners. As observed by G.N. Kates, Chinese Household Furniture, New York, 1948, p.32, these cabinets demonstrate the craftsmen's remarkable ability to manipulate rigid wood with such mastery that the observer perceives the design as if it were alive and dynamic. This classic Ming style continued in popularity well into the 18th and 19th century. For a Ming period example from which the present lot borrows heavily in style, see a similar pair of cabinets, late Ming/early Qing dynasty, but also without a central stile, in the collection of Dr S.Y. Yip, illustrated by G.Wu Bruce, Dreams of Chu Tan Chamber and the Romance with Huanghuali Wood: The Dr. S.Y. Yip Collection of Classic Chinese Furniture, Hong Kong, 1991, no.47. The absence of a central stile in the present pair of cabinets indicates that the doors were likely not intended to be fastened with locks.See a slightly smaller single huanghuali cabinet, 18th/19th century, which was sold at Christie's London, 7 November 2017, lot 188. See also a single huanghuali cabinet, 19th century, also without a central stile, 19th century, which was sold at Sotheby's New York, 17 September 2016, lot 1002.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * TP Y* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.TP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. JESSICA HAYLLAR (1858-1940) Pink Roses signed and dated 1904 lower right, oil on board, 25cm x 17.5cmNote: The eldest daughter of genre, portrait and landscape painter James Hayllar (1829-1920) Jessica Hayllar, along with her younger sisters Edith, Mary and Kate, honed their considerable artistic talents under the watchful eye of their father. Jessica was the most talented of her artistic siblings, as well as the most prolific - She exhibited at the Royal Academy in London regularly between 1879 and 1915 and also had works shown at the Society of British Artists, the Institute of Painters in Oil Colours and at the Royal Manchester Institution. However following an accident around 1900, (family tradition has it that she was crippled after being knocked down by a carriage), she turned to flower pictures, especially the azaleas which feature in so much of her earlier work. She died unmarried in 1940, in Bournemouth, the resort to which she and her father had moved in 1899.The Hayllar family homes, firstly in Wallingford and latterly in Bournemouth, were comfortable and fashionable, reflecting the late nineteenth century Aesthetic Movement taste for combining antique European furniture with Oriental porcelain and modern wallpapers and soft furnishings. The same blue and gilt Chinese jardiniere with blossoming branches and foliate roundels appears in 'A Sunny Corner' painted in 1909. A rare Chinese Canton famille rose lozenge-shaped 'fisherman, woodcutter, farmer and scholar æ¼æ¨µè€•讀圖' vase, Qianlong H.: 38,4 cm (incl. stand) H.: 33,2 cm (the vase) This vase depicts the four noble professions of ancient China: fisherman, woodcutter, farmer, and scholar 'æ¼æ¨µè€•讀'. Fisherman, woodcutter, farmer and scholar, are four relatively important occupations in Chinese farming society and represent the basic lifestyle of the working people in ancient China. Many are also performed by officials after their retirement. Therefore, traditional Chinese folk paintings often use fishermen, woodcutters, and farmers as theme, and many classical furniture often use these same professions as their carving design, which means that business is flourishing. This is a less common design on Chinese porcelain, which makes this piece an interesting collectible.

Lot 49

A Chinese blue and white yenyen vase, 19th centuryDecorated with a prunus pattern on 'cracked ice' ground, between panelled borders and additionally decorated with shou symbols.46cm highProvenance:By repute, purchased from a dispersal sale at Badger Hall in the 1940s.Footnote:Badger Hall in Shropshire was re-built and extended in the 18th century, going on to house a fine collection of paintings, furniture and works of art. Its last residents, the Capel Cures', dynasty ended in 1937 and the house was eventually sold to a paper company and remained unoccupied until its eventual demolition in 1953. Between 1945 and 1952 there were at least two dispersal sales held, the first offering some 1,500 lots of antiques and works of art. It is likely that the present lot originates from that auction.Condition:Negligible signs of age. Some tiny fritting spots to the rim edge.

Lot 1134

Pair of Chinese Longyanmu (tiger-skin wood) side tables, each of square form with stylised carved decoration, with single shelf over a trelliswork base, each signed to base of shelf in characters reading "Used by Chen Lian in the 14th year of the Republican period" (ie 1926) 80cm high x 35cm square (2)  It is believed that this does not relate to the date they were made and is a form of scholarly graffiti inscribed on the furniture by its owner, Chen Lian. The intelligentsia and official class in Imperial China, continuing into the Republican era, enjoyed a very refined lifestyle, practising painting, calligraphy and writing poems, as well as attending to their official duties. And much like the upper middle classes in Britain, they liked to collect antiques and fine furniture. Officials would usually have had a study in which they worked and practised the aforementioned arts - this would have been furnished with antiques and a desk. They also liked to make their own marks of ownership or appreciation on antiques and paintings - for example, Chinese emperors added their seal marks or sometimes wrote poems on famous paintings they owned. Condition Report Overall in good order. One with some slight splitting/separating to square top panel. The other with some similar splitting/separating to the top and also with areas of water damage & staining, Some very minor scuffing to legs and feet, overall with minor flaking to red varnish to underside of fretwork.

A Teak and Brass-Bound Table Cabinet, late 18th century, of rectangular form, the two hinged doors enclosing an arrangement of ten drawers with brass drop handles, on bracket feet with shaped apron 60.5cm by 43cm by 50.5cm Cabinets of this design are thought to have been made for Dutch Vereenigde Oostindische Compaignie officials in either Batavia (now Jakarta) or Sri Lanka. The metal fittings and the unusual drawer construction are both typical of the form. The design was presumably derived from contemporary Japanese and Chinese lacquer cabinets. There is a similar example, made of teak, in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, and another in the Gemeenten Museum, Dan Haag.See Veenendaal (Jan) Furniture from Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India during the Dutch period, Delft 1985), pl.72 and Eliëns (Titus M) (ed.) Domestic Interiors at the Cape and in Batavia 1602-1795, Den Haag, (2002), No.22

λ&nbspDORA GORDINE (ESTONIAN 1895-1991) STANDING FEMALE DANCER Bronze with green patina Signed and numbered 2/6 to the base Height 65cm (25½ in.) 'If people really want to know me, let them look at my sculpture, because words are not my medium at all. It is sculpture that is my medium.' Dora GordineDora Gordine's Standing Dancer captures the movement and elegance of the female form. Gordine explored themes of motherhood and womanhood through her bold, strong and yet feminine sculptures, usually cast in bronze. Gordine was initially influenced by a group of artists in her homeland Estonia coined 'Noor Eesti' who followed the concepts and ideals of the Art Nouveau movement. In 1924, Gordine relocated to Paris and was immediately encapsulated by the rich French culture frequently visiting the multitude of galleries, operas and museums. In 1925, Gordine worked for the British Pavilion at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris, as a mural painter. This opportunity provided her with the means to start producing bronze sculptures again and Gordine went on to exhibit her works at the Beaux Arts Society and the Salon Des Tuileries in 1926 where she presented a head and torso sculpture of a Chinese philosopher which was met with great acclaim. Back in London in 1928, the Leicester Galleries held Gordine's first solo show, which proved to be a great success; all of the pieces selling including one to Samuel Courtauld. In 1936, Dora married the Hon. Richard Gilbert Hare and together they built Dorich House in Kingston Vale which doubled up as their home to showcase their personal collection of Russian Art and furniture but also her studio to create and display her sculptures. Through her husband's connections Gordine became immersed within London's fashionable elite. Figures such as Sir Kenneth Clark, Dame Beryl Grey and Professor Frederick Brown, head of the Slade School of Art all jumped at the opportunity to sit for Gordine. The present lot signifies Gordine's approach to sculpture, she felt sculpture was a tool to depict not only identifiable features but capture the vision of a sitter. The figure stands poised, caught in a moment of movement oblivious to the onlooker. 'You have to imagine what they are like inside and bring out their inner feeling and then put it in a form.' Dora Gordine, BBC Interview, 1972   Condition Report: Light surface dirt throughout otherwise appears to be in good original condition. No obvious evidence of restoration or repair. A RARE GEORGE III GREEN PAINTED DOG GATE CIRCA 1760 One of only five known published examples 93cm high, 82.5cm wide, 5cm deep So-called 'dog gates' were fitted to the staircase newel post, either at the bottom to prevent dogs coming up the stairs, or at the top to stop children falling down. Most of course have since perished and those few remaining such as the current example are rare survivors. Please refer to our website for the complete footnote including recorded examples from the 17th century and later. The earliest recorded 'dog gate' is a Jacobean oak example still at Haddon Hall, Derbyshire (Gervase Jackson Stops, The English Country House, London, 1985, pages 64-5). Another, of vernacular form, dating from the Charles II period, with an oak frame and pine wriggle work splats, is likely to have matched the fretted sides of the staircase to which it was once attached (Christie's London, Interiors, 26 June 2016, lot 370). A later example and related to the current example being offered , dates from the third quarter of the eighteenth century and retains the original paint scheme and iron fittings. The 'Chinese paling' fretwork follows patterns popularised by the publications of architects and cabinetmakers of the period, notably Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman & Cabinet-Maker's Directory of 1754 and Sir William Chambers' Designs of Chinese Buildings, Furniture, etc. of 1757. Another related 'paling' example remains visible behind a staircase window in Rivers Street, Bath.  Condition Report: Overall this is distressed with scratches, marks, chips, cracks, abrasions and some evidence of old worm consistent with age and use. Please see all the additional condition report photographs through the link on the condition report email as a visual reference of condition. Condition Report Disclaimer
