Silver coronation medal, Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, dated 26 June 1902 in red leather and velvet lined presentation case with Elkington & Co Ltd insignia. Further boxed in original Elkington & Co Ltd cardboard box, inscribed in ink: FROM SIR FREDERICK TREVES. Within the red leather presentation case is a 1.5 by 3 inch calling card with Sir Frederick Treves, 6 Wimple Street W. printed in blue copperplate. This card is inscribed by hand in ink: 'Silver Coronation Medal', initials, possibly 'M H' and 'kind regards'. After studying contemporary examples of Treves' writing, we believe this is his handwriting and therefore also his coronation medal. Note: Two days before Edward VII's coronation date the king fell gravely ill with appendicitis, which at this time was generally not operated upon and had a very high mortality rate. The outlook was bleak. Sir Frederick Treves, who was then an Honorary Surgeon to the King presented him with a stark choice: go ahead with the coronation and it will be followed by a funeral. The coronation was cancelled and Treves performed a radical operation. Within 24 hours the king was sitting up in bed smoking a cigar. The coronation took place on the 9th August. Treves was made a Baronet and became a household name for saving the king's life. He is more widely known in a modern context for his friendship with Joseph Merrick, otherwise known as The Elephant Man. The vendor has owned this medal for some time, he is now elderly and has no memory of how he acquired it.
