A RARE GEORGE III VERGE FUSEE HOUR-STRIKING DIAL WALL CLOCKPEACOCK, LONDON, CIRCA 1780The five pillar twin fusee bell striking movement with verge escapement regulated by short bob pendulum, the 12 inch circular single sheet silvered brass Roman numeral dial with shaped false-bob aperture and signed PEACOCK, Royal Exchange, London to centre, with Arabic five minutes beyond the outer minute track and scroll-pierced steel hands, secured via two pinned feet fitted to the edge of the dial plate to the cavetto moulded wooden surround behind a conforming moulded cast brass hinged glazed bezel, the fixed rear box case with hinged door to right hand side and to the back panel.40.5cm (16ins) diameter, 16.5cm (6.5ins) deep. Baillie notes a centre-seconds watch by him in the Ilbert collection and records another entry for a George Peacock working from Cornhill in 1784. Condition Report: Movement appears complete and is in working condition with no visible evidence of alteration or noticeable replacements. The mechanism is however in dirty/dusty condition hence will require a gentle clean/service/lubrication before putting to use. The upper left dial foot has lost its tip so is unable to be secured with a pin and the pendulum holdfast hook has been replaced by a simple screw otherwise movement appears free from noticeable faults. The dial is in fine condition although the engraving is a little thin in places (most likely from repeated re-silvering) The right hand foor for securing the dial to the wooden surround has had some minor hammering to the surface (to tighten the rivet-type fixing). The silvering has oxidised a little hence now has an overall pleasing mellow appearance. The case is in sound original condition. The surround has cracks at nine and six o'clock but neither are structural or have significant losses/chips although the left hand side has a brass strip applied to assist with securing locking of the bezel. The right-hand side door has the edge strip overlap missing from the lower edge and a loss to the corner of the slip applied to the upper margin. The left-hand side has an aperture cut to allow clearance for the hammer. Both the lower edges of each side have slips applied (pinned) - the reason for these is unknown but is not considered evidence of alteration. The rear door top clamp has at some point been detached and has been replaced by a rail secured within the upper margin the door aperture cut with a hanging hole around which is wear. There is a chip/loss adjacent to the upper hinge. Door lock and hinges appear original.
