Lot 65

1967 Ford Lotus Cortina MK2 Series 1 saloon. reg. no. WTW 455F, an excellent older restoration with recent (2021) engine overhaul. The vendor, who is a very knowledgeable and capable car restorer, bought this Lotus Cotina in 2006 as a project. It hadn't run for 16 years and was in need of a total restoration. Systematically, he stripped the car down to the last nut and bolt and totally restored it over a 3 year period using all original parts where possible. The end result won him many prizes at classic car events with the underside of the car as polished and well finished as the top. In 2021 the engine was in need of attention, and owing to his advancing years, the owner instructed Steve Thomas Enterprises to overhaul it with Burton Power supplying many of the parts, totalling approximately £4000. Since the engine rebuild it has covered approximately 1188 miles and has bedded in nicely. The rest of the car has remained in excellent condition due to its pampered existence only showing some minor wear and tear which could easily be rectified. The overall appearance being that of a Lotus Cortina when it was nearly new. The underbonnet and underside are still probably better than when it left the factory, and is a joy to behold. It is supplied with a V5, old MOTs and a large history file of invoices and related ephemera. A lovely example which has been well maintained, and with the assurance of being an older restoration, there are no nasty surprises awaiting to appear, unlike some recent restorations. It is supplied with a V5 and history file including original handbook and service manual, an article written about this car in Thoroughbred & Classic Cars in April 1987 at which point it had been lovingly restored by an enthusiast who had owned it for 18 years. 1929 Singer Junior 4-seater saloon, reg. no. VX 1239. 848cc engine, 3-speed gearbox. The vendor's husband describes the car as follows:"An older restoration but drives perfectly on the road. Driven and seriously campaigned by the same owners for 57 years. Two gearboxes, a petrol tank and radiator to go with the car.The Singer was bought from a scrapyard in Stanway, Essex, by local resident and vintage motoring enthusiast, Harry Booth, sixty-four years ago. It was in reasonable working condition and Harry’s daughter, Merriel, aged sixteen, decided it would be an ideal car in which to learn to drive. The extensive yard in front of “The Old Cottage Paint Shop”, Harry’s business in London Road, Stanway at the time, proved ideal for Merriel to practice gear-changes and become familiar with the controls of an elderly car, its accelerator between the clutch and the brake. But on returning from work one afternoon, she discovered that her Dad had sold the Singer to a couple from Great Maplestead who had answered an advertisement for a 1930s Sunbeam which he had for sale in Exchange and Mart. David and Sylvia Rouse were keen vintagents but decided that the Sunbeam was not for them and asked Harry if he had anything else he might like to sell, whereupon he suggested the Singer. A deal was done, the princely sum of £5 changed hands and the car was driven back to Maplestead, but when David opened the door, a mouse jumped out. That was in the summer of 1962.Returning home from work that evening, Merriel was most disappointed to discover that the Singer had gone. Some thirty years later she came across the car at a rally and declared, “That’s my car!”, to a surprised David Rouse who initially doubted her story, but after being shown a photograph of Merriel sitting on the bonnet, doubted no longer. After driving it home and having renewed the magneto cap, David immediately began to use the Singer as everyday transport travelling to and from Marconi in Chelmsford, where he worked as Patents Officer, twenty miles each way for nine months after which he decided that a major overhaul of the car might be sensible. He and Sylvia subsequently used the car mainly for Vintage Sports Car Club events, covering more than 44,000 miles whilst competing in hill climbs, driving tests, navigational rallies and tours. They were adamant that the car should never be trailered and would drive frequently as far as Llandrindod Wells, for example, on a Friday afternoon averaging 30mph or so, in order to compete on the Saturday. David kept a detailed record of every journey, time taken, average speed, oil used, and petrol consumed; it makes fascinating reading. On one occasion, they had driven from Maplestead to Builth Wells when the magneto began to misfire and the decision was taken to, “return home whilst the engine was still running”, a distance of around 450 miles, almost non-stop.The Rouses owned a number of vintage and classic cars, competing seriously in all of them, but the Singer was one of their favourites which they kept for 57 years. When David died in 2017, Sylvia decided that the time had come to sell the collection, but two remained, a BSA that had been David’s first, and the Singer which, when Merriel asked whether or not it had been sold, Sylvia replied, “But it’s yours if you’d like it.”Merriel has been its custodian since 2019 but it is now time for a new owner and the Singer will be sold at auction, all proceeds going to St Helena Hospice, Colchester".It is supplied with a massive history file, including photographs, which is a joy to read. A truly loved old car. (Subject to 12% buyers' premium inclusive of VAT).

Lot 20

Registration – Y89 HGY Chassis No. – WP0ZZZ98Z1S601721 M.O.T. – February 2026 Odometer – 104,500 This charming 2001 Porsche Boxster, offered at No Reserve, is finished in the classic combination of silver with a black roof – just like the famous 1993 Boxster Concept. Registered in May 2001, it is a 2.7-litre model, an enhanced version of the original 2.5-litre flat-six version with 217bhp and 0-62mph in just 6.6 seconds. The vendor says the engine, transmission and electrics are all in ‘good’ condition, helped by ‘Y89HGY’s comprehensive service history. There is just one stamp missing in the service book – and even that has a receipt in the history as evidence it was completed. The MOT is valid until February 2026 and the odometer reads 104,500 miles.   ‘Y89HGY’ has been owned by the vendor for more than two years. In this time, they have continued to maintain it extremely well. They note the car has a desirable upgraded roof with glass rear screen, plus premium Michelin tyres. The later-spec smoked rear lights work really well with the silver paintwork. The suspension has been fully replaced – that’s arms, M030 springs and Bilstein dampers – and it has been polybushed too. The longitudinal brake lines have also been replaced. With just minor bodywork marks here and there, this is an honest and very presentable car offered at No Reserve.   After the beautiful concept car wowed the world in 1993, the Porsche Boxster was introduced in 1996, becoming the first mid-engined two-seat Porsche roadster since the classic 914. Codenamed 986, it was closely related to the upcoming new water-cooled Porsche 911 996, and quickly gained kudos as a result. Porsche continued to develop it with regular model year updates, with this 2001 model benefitting from many of them – not least the well-rounded 2.7-litre engine.   In summary:   · 2001 Porsche Boxster offered at No Reserve · Comprehensive service history · Upgraded glass roof and Michelin tyres

The exquisite two-tone metallic paint features Oyster Silver over Sky Blue. It presents very well indeed, enhanced by the flying ‘B’ and wire mesh grille that was exclusive to the Bentley Eight. Inside, it has bespoke walnut dashboard and door cappings, complemented by blue leather upholstery. There is an impressive array of 1980s electronic gadgetry and it even has an integrated car phone!   ‘C567GVM’ has a full history and the vendor reports it has been maintained to a very high standard – and been “very loved”. It has had just three previous keepers. The odometer reads just 83,000 miles. It’s been recently serviced and is all ready for the new owner to enjoy. It is even MOT’d until February 2026. “This is a must buy for the Bentley enthusiast… an opportunity to own a moment of history.”   The Bentley Eight was introduced in 1984 as a more accessible entry point for the marque – although this was still relative. It was an immediate hit, and sales soon expanded from just the UK into Europe and the US. The Eight was always marked out by its wire mesh grille, and also had firmer suspension. Naturally, it was equipped with the classic 6.75-litre V8 engine, paired with a silky-smooth automatic transmission.   In summary:   · “One of a kind” 1986 Bentley Eight · Full history and maintained to a very high standard · “A must buy for a Bentley enthusiast”

1949 Riley RMA 1496cc. Registration number TBC. Chassis number 39S16526. Engine number 16549. Sold with the V5C, two keys, photographic restoration 1985-89, large history folder, books and some spares.PLEASE NOTE, DVLA are in the process of issuing an age related registration number for the car. When this has been completed Spicers will deal with the transfer of ownership and a new V5C will be issued. The Riley RM Series was produced from 1945 until 1955. It was the last model developed independently by Riley prior to the 1952 merger of Riley's still new owner Nuffield, with Austin to form BMC. There were four types of RM vehicles produced. All used Riley engines with four cylinders in-line, hemispherical combustion chambers and twin camshafts mounted high at the sides of the cylinder block. The RMA was a large saloon, and was replaced by the RME, both used a 1496 cc engine developed before WWII. The RMB was a longer car and used a 2.5 L 16 hp "Big Four" engine. TBC has known history from 1968 when Martin Croston bought it from a scrap yard in Rochdale, for £15, those were the days! He sold it to Mr Whittle in 1969, then Roy Sawford in 1971, David Brown in 1973, and Alistair Cameron in 1974 then Kevin Newton. By 1984 it was with James Findlay and it was in need of a total restoration. This was undertaken between 1985 and 1989. It was fully stripped back with new ash A, B, and C posts, the engine was rebuilt with shell bearings, the whole leather interior, the roof lining and door cards, in addition to the full respray the roof covering was replaced. After some use it was sold it to Charles Batty of Huddersfield in 1995 and our vendor bought it in 2003. He has kept a detail log of work he has undertaken over the years including a new clutch in 2009, and the cylinder head skimmed in 2012. He now finds it too large for his needs and has bought a smaller classic. It should be noted that the drivers front window winder no longer open it (they were prone to leaking) and that there is a spare key hidden in the chassis....ask the auctioneer!

Registration No: Unregistered Frame No: ZAPM5010000006557 MOT: NoneOnly 1km recorded as it has only ever been pushed Never used or had any fuel in itHugely collectible clean VespaA great rare opportunityThe Vespa P range was launched in 1977 in Milan as the nuova linea model (new line). A hugely successful model for Piaggio for almost 40 years. The P range now stands as the last ‘classic’ Vespa range produced. With a newly designed and more angular chassis than all that had preceded it, it soon had integral indicators, electronic ignition and a much larger headlight than the Rally, the range it superseded. Several versions came and went and upgrades over the years included 12v electronics, automatic fuel mix, lockable side panels and disc brakes. But the end of the line was near with Euro 3 compliance standards ramping up against 2-stroke motorcycles and a catalytic converter was added from 2010 to prolong the life of the range. However, this wasn’t enough and production of the PX ended completely in early 2017 as the engine would fail to meet Euro 4 compliance emission requirements. This ‘new’ late edition model in Piaggio ‘Midnight Blue’ is completely as it came out of the factory. We do not believe it has ever had fuel in it as the tank was spotless clean and dry. It was purchased by our vendor from a local car auction and no details or documents were provided with it. We have since done our own investigations and have concluded it is a British market Vespa due to the side mirrors script and the presence of the UK size registration plate holder which was still in its original packaging. We have also conducted a HPI check based on the chassis and the machine comes up with no reported misdemeanours on the system. The mystery may never be solved but this is a quite unrepeatable and extraordinary find. We note that even the bar code and factory control stickers are still present as is the protective film over the leg shield protectors. It comes with the full brand new owner's pack complete with tools, manuals, guarantee books and keys. No attempt has been made to start it! Registration No: PD 351 Frame No: 336950 MOT: ExemptPossibly the finest restored Triumph RicardoA multi award-winning machineRestored by the renowned John GuyCurrent ownership since 1963 with the receipt on fileNamed after engine designer Sir Harry Ricardo a replacement for the aging Triumph side-valves, it featured an innovative four valve head design and was capable of over 70 mph, set three world speed records and won a gold medal in the 1923 International Six Day Trial (ISDT). The engine achieved over 20bhp the same as a 1500cc car engine of the time. The cycle parts were based on Triumph's well-proven Triumph Model H side-valve. The 'Riccy' continued in production as a sports model until 1928.This 1924 Triumph Ricardo has been restored by the renowned John Guy. John has been on the concours scene for many decades. This Triumph Ricardo was purchased by John in 1972 as a restoration project (receipt on file). The 'Ricky' (as they are known) was mothballed for decades until John began the restoration in 2008. The quality of his work is second to none, with attention to detail and authenticity. Since its completion, John has won many awards with the 'Ricky' and enjoyed it until a couple of years ago when he had a slight issue with the clutch. Sadly, due to other commitments, he never got around to sorting it out. Offered for the first time in over 60 years, this concours machine would be a delight for its new owner. It was featured in Classic Motorcycle after it won many awards. The 'Ricky' is offered with a file about the machine, including its original purchase receipt, old photos when purchased, restoration photos, and a current V5C. Before placing it back on the road, some checking of the clutch will be required. For more information, please contact: Mike Davis mike.davis@handh.co.uk 07718 584217

Registration No: CLF 97 Frame No: AA176 MOT: ExemptA lovely restored example of the now rare and sought-after EndeavourA rare and desirable ‘top of the range’ pre-war DouglasHas previously passed through the hands of eminent dealers Micheal Freeman and Brian VerralOriginally an off-shoot of the Bristol based Douglas Foundry Company the motorcycle sub-division that bore its name was founded in 1907. Characterised by their 'fore-and-aft' mounted flat-twin engines, Douglas motorcycles enjoyed considerable success in both on- and off-road competition (winning the 1912 TT and taking two team prizes in the Six Days Trial etc). Producing some 25,000 despatch bikes during World War I, the 1920s saw their machines sporting overhead valves, all-chain drive and lower frames with Tom Sheard using one to win the 1923 Senior TT. However, an expansive range of expensive models meant they were hit harder than most by the Depression. Thus, the recently formed Douglas Motors (1932) Ltd. found itself in the hands of the receiver two short years later. Rescued by old William Douglas himself, it re-emerged as William Douglas (Bristol) Ltd. Anxious to gain some much needed publicity, management charged the factory experimental department with creating an exciting new model. The result was the Endeavour. Developed by Eddie Withers, Jack Clapham and Stan Jenkins in the course of just a few short months it made its debut at the 1934 Olympia Show. The first Douglas to feature a transverse mounted powerplant, its 494cc side-valve flat-twin was shared with the more traditional Blue Chief (the prototype of which was being tested simultaneously). Equipped with a four-speed tank-change gearbox and car-like shaft drive, it was widely acclaimed by the contemporary press encouraging Douglas to lay down some 200 sets of parts. Though, in an interview given to The Classic Motorcycle magazine in November 1985, Eddie Withers claimed that no more than 50 Endeavours were ever completed. Hamstrung by a £72 10s price tag that put it in direct competition with the likes of the four-valve ohv Rudge Ulster (£73 10s) and 990cc Matchless Model X (£68 15s), the ground-breaking machine had no sooner got into its production stride than Douglas hit financial troubles again. Following a takeover by Aero Engines Ltd in June 1935, motorcycle operations slowed to a trickle with the remaining '1936' Endeavours being sold off via the Pride & Clarke dealership. This is a lovely restored example of the now rare and sought-after Endeavour model that was produced by Douglas in the early 1930s as a top of the range ‘flagship’ model. It incorporated several advanced design features, including a 'car-like' clutch and transmission with propshaft, which sadly proved to be a bit too expensive to make it the success it should have been. Described by the vendor as good in all respects, 'CLF' is accompanied by a history file with various historic receipts showing not only that it has had a comprehensive restoration but it has also, very interestingly and significantly, passed through the hands of eminent dealers Micheal Freeman and Brian Verral. Additionally, offered with some old MOTs, an original sales brochure copy and period articles. An excellent opportunity to acquire a rare and desirable ‘top of the range’ pre-war Douglas in nicely restored condition combined with the mechanical specification, this machine is worthy of serious consideration as a rideable pre-war mount. Registration No: UNM 510W Frame No: 901097 MOT: ExemptDucati's tribute to Hailwood's famous 1978 TT victoryA 1981 model with a steel tank and two-piece fairingBeautifully presented and supplied with a current V5CDucati was established in 1926 by Antonio Ducati and his sons, initially producing electrical components. After WWII they moved into motorcycles with the Cucciola, essentially a pushbike with a clip-on engine, but by the 1960s had become associated with performance bikes selling a range of sporty 250 and 350 singles. In response to the demand for larger capacity bikes, chief engineer Fabio Taglioni designed the classic V-twin bevel drive engine first used in the 1971 GT750. This proved to be an immediate success, helped considerably by Paul Smart's win in the 1972 Imola 200 race. This started a long tradition of race-winning V-twins that have gone on to dominate World Superbike racing over the years. In spite of Ducati's continued success in World Superbike and Moto GP, their most famous victory was Mike Hailwood's amazing victory in the 1978 IOM TT Formula 1 race. After retiring from bike racing in the late 1960s and carrying injuries from his Formula 1 car racing career, he won his comeback race adding to his already legendary status. After Mike's spectacular victory on the NCR Sports Motorcycles Ducati, the factory commemorated his win with the introduction of a race replica based on the 900SS. Originally titled the ‘900 Replica’, the 1979 model was only produced in a limited run of around 200 bikes and had a fibreglass cover over a regular 900 Super Sport fuel tank. By 1980 onwards the fuel tank was made from steel but the bike was essentially the same as the 1979 version with Brembo brake callipers and Dell’Orto carburettors. This beautifully presented and mostly original Mike Hailwood Replica was recommissioned by Steel City Classics a while ago after being displayed in a Scottish motorcycle shop window for the previous 10 years. It is a 1981 model with a steel fuel tank and two-piece fairing, but without the side panel/battery covers fitted to the later versions. The fuel tank has been taken apart by Devon Bike Tank Restorers, blasted clean, lined with an E10-resistant coating and then professionally repainted at a cost of over £1400 in 2023. It is fitted with stainless steel silencers and comes supplied with some receipts, a couple of manuals, some old MOTs and a current V5C. Run last summer (see video) it has been dry stored since in a heated garage. For more information, please contact: Ian Cunningham ian.cunningham@handh.co.uk 07415871189
