A significant Limehouse model of a cat, circa 1746-48Of large size, modelled seated with its tail curled around its back leg, with coat with spots of varying size in blue, its eyes, whiskers and toes also picked out in blue and with solid washes of blue between its legs, 16.7cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceWinifred Florence Bury (née Harris)Thence by family descent to the present ownerThis remarkable model was inherited by the granddaughter of Winifred Florence Bury (1885-1980), who came from a farming family in the village of Cublington, Buckinghamshire. In the late 19th century, her parents lived at Fern Cottage on Whitchurch Road, and they farmed at Manor Farm on Ridings Way. Her parents and grandparents were all born in or around Cublington, and it is quite possible that she inherited it from one of them. Following her marriage to Charles Horace Bury in 1908 she moved to Stretford, Manchester, where this cat survived a bombing during the Second World War.The only other recorded version of this celebrated model was sold by Phillips on 11 September 1991, lot 527, just a year after the conclusion of excavations at the factory site. This is illustrated on the dustjacket of the ECC's Limehouse Ware Revealed (1993), and on p.33, fig.53 alongside a fragment of a front paw excavated from the Limehouse factory site which corresponds exactly to the model. The present lot is almost identical save for the addition of blue markings denoting the animal's fur. Both examples have a number of close similarities to Staffordshire cats of the same period, see the lead-glazed model sold by Bonhams on 9 March 2005, lot 24 and the saltglaze example illustrated by Diana Edwards and Rodney Hampson, White Salt-Glazed Stoneware (2005), p.112, col.pl.82, which are of comparable large size. It is known that Staffordshire potters worked at the Limehouse factory and other shapes at Limehouse were influenced by Staffordshire prototypes, see for example the Limehouse beaker-form vase illustrated alongside a saltglaze version by Edwards and Hampson (2005), p.100, fig.96 and col.pl.66. That the model of the cat has been slip-cast provides yet another close link to Staffordshire. The Limehouse factory closed in around 1748 and its owner Joseph Wilson later worked in pottery and experimental porcelain at Pomona Inn in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, see Limehouse Ware Revealed (1993), pp.57-8. This may also account for the close similarities between the Staffordshire and Limehouse models. This remarkable cat represents an exciting new addition to the Limehouse oeuvre. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
A most unusual engraved armorial baluster goblet, Bohemian or perhaps Scandinavian, early 18th centuryThe generous round funnel bowl decorated with a coat of arms, a two-tailed lion rampant holding a fireball with four flames, the crest a helmet, thereon perched a dove with wings elevated, holding in its beak a sprig of olive, all flanked by voluminous scrollwork, the reverse profusely decorated with a spray of fruit and flowers flanked by stylised cornucopias of fruit, resting on a collar, the stem with a distinctive multi-knopped stem with a wide central hollow cushion knop between triple-annulated knops, the spreading foot with a garland of foliate scrollwork underneath, 25cm highFootnotes:It has not been possible to identify the arms on this goblet, but the two-tailed lion is unusual in heraldry and mostly associated with Bohemia. The stem formation, with a particularly wide central knop, together with the slight greenish tint of the glass is unusual. The stem is reminiscent of a goblet from the Heinrich Heine Collection engraved with the monogram of Queen Louise Ulrike of Sweden, illustrated in the catalogue, Edles Altes Glas (1977), p.73, no.109, perhaps suggesting a Scandinavian origin for this piece. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
An exceptional engraved armorial Nuremberg goblet, circa 1670-90The deep round funnel bowl finely decorated with a riverside landscape scene depicting the myth of Actaeon changed into a Stag, the young hunter standing beside the river wearing Roman costume, a pair of antlers sprouting from his head, brandishing a spear in his right hand and with his left arm raised, his two hounds at his feet, the goddess Diana standing in the water before him, covering her modesty and pointing at Acteon with her left hand, three nymphs around her and a fourth nymph reclining nude beneath a tree beside them, the water picked out in diamond-point, all beneath a radiant sun, the reverse with a crowned coat of arms with a chevron between three roses, flanked by tied palm fronds, beneath a banner inscribed 'CASTIS OMNIA CASTA' (To the pure everything is pure), set on a distinctive tall multi-knopped stem with a hollow knop flanked by trios of mereses, above a hollow baluster section terminating in further mereses, the spreading circular foot with a foliate garland and neatly folded at the footrim edge, 23cm highFootnotes:The scene on this goblet recounts the myth of Diana and Actaeon, described by Ovid in Book III of his 'Metamorphoses'. Actaeon stumbles across the nude Huntress bathing with her nymphs in a woodland glade. Enraged by the intrusion, Diana transforms him into a stag, after which he flees and is devoured by his own hounds. The young hunter is shown here only partially transformed, with horns but a human head and body. The scene is after an original etching by Antonio Tempesta (Italian, 1555–1630) published as Plate 25, 'Dianae aspectu Actaeon in ceruum', in 'Metamorphoseon' by the Dutch cartographer Wilhelmus Ianssonius (Willem Janszoon Blaeu) in Amsterdam in 1606. The motto above the unidentified coat of arms is a biblical quote from the Latin Vulgate to Titus, 1:15. The myth was a favourite during the Renaissance, with Actaeon surprising Diana being the most popular scene. A Nuremburg engraved tumbler with another version of the scene was sold by Phillips on 9 June 1999, lot 11.The present goblet has a number of remarkable similarities to an example in the glass collection at the Veste Coburg, illustrated by Erich Meyer-Heissig, Der Nürnberger Glasschnit des 17. Jahrhunderts (1963), p.100, no.229, which depicts a comparable scene of Actaeon and Diana bathing, but in which Actaeon has already been transformed into a stag. The way in which the figures, hounds and foliage of the trees have been engraved, together with the distinctive ripples on the surface of the water in diamond-point, are all reminiscent of the present lot and the same hand must certainly be responsible. Unfortunately, the master engraver responsible is unknown, but the style and quality is reminiscent of pieces by contemporary masters including Hermann Schwinger and Johann Wolfgang Schmidt. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
A fine Bohemian engraved armorial goblet, early 18th centuryThe generous round funnel bowl cut with twelve vertical facets and decorated with a female figure with fruit in her hair, probably emblematic of Demeter, standing holding a large cornucopia of fruit under her left arms, a branch of fruiting vine in her right hand, within a foliate wreath issuing vine leaves and tendrils, the reverse with a coat of arms, three Moor's heads couped and banded, the crest a Moor's head couped and banded on a helmet issuing elaborate mantling, surmounted by a ducal coronet, within a pair of palm fronds tied with ribbon, on a collar above a faceted inverted baluster stem, the wide conical foot with a stiff-leaf garland, 16.1cm highFootnotes:A goblet engraved in a very similar style from the Ernesto Wolf Collection , also depicting Greek deities within a comparable foliate wreath, is illustrated by Brigitte Klesse and Axel von Saldern, 500 Jahre Glaskunst (1978), no.99. This relates to a distinct group of densely engraved goblets of Bohemian or Silesian origin, see the example from the Christian von Reitzenstein Collection offered by Bonhams Cornette de Saint Cyr on 29 October 2024, lot 98 and the corresponding footnote. The arms on the present goblet are unidentified by may relate to the Mohr family. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
