Buffy used crossbows to slay vampires throughout the series, including when she shot a stake through one's heart in the Season 7 episode "Storyteller."This crossbow features a plywood body painted dark brown with plastic limbs and a sight painted silver to appear metallic, a wood-tipped metal crank on the left side, a metal hook on the right side, and twine wrapped around the riser. The bow exhibits visible signs of production use, including extensive chips to the plywood, paint scuffing, and stains to the metal. The majority of a substantial and richly ornamented gold crossbow brooch comprising two lateral knobs trimmed with beading, the arched bow still preserved with trimmed edge and filigree decoration, the sides of the head ornamented with solid volutes. Material Culture in the 4th-5th Centuries, CBA Research Report 162, 2010, p.67. 17.64 grams, 43mm (1 3/4"). Acquired in Holland, 1987. Rogers collection, Suffolk, UK. Gold crossbow fibulae of this type were worn by high officers and even emperors, from Constantine to Justinian, as symbols of military rank. A classification and chronology of such fibulae has been established by Pröttel; Type 6 crossbows such as this have been dated to c. 390-460 AD. Two examples at the BM are gold, including the famous one from Moray Firth. Fair condition, held together with wire.

A silver-gilt crossbow brooch comprising a hollow hexagonal-section crossbar with beaded wire collars and onion-shaped knop terminals, third knop above and openwork scroll detailing to the upper face on one side of the bar only; triangular-section bow with beaded wire coil to the lower end, D-section footplate with scroll detailing to the long sides and to the short edge; pin and catchplate to reverse. Cf. The British Museum, museum number 1844,0709.1, for a broadly similar example. 57.9 grams, 87mm wide (3 1/2"). North American collection, 1990s-2000s. Property of a Surrey gentleman.
