Seitlich vielfigurige, in graviertem und geschwärztem Bein eingelegte jagdliche Szene mit Darstellung von Jägern und Hunden bei der Hatz auf Sau und Hirsch. Eingeschobene Bolzenauflage aus Bein, in der Schnur laufende originale Nuss aus Bein. Mehrachsiges Schloss, klappbarer Stecherabzug mit gegratetem eisernen Abzugsbügel. Distinctively bellied tiller made of fruitwood, the top and bottom veneered with engraved bone inlays. The side with a multi-figured hunting scene, depicting hunters and hounds chasing a wild boar and a stag, inlaid in engraved, blackened bone. The inset quarrel groove in bone, the original bone nut is secured with cord. Multi-axle lock, the folding set trigger with ridged, iron trigger guard. Some bone inlays on the end of the butt well replaced. The old monogram "MCVI" engraved on the underside. Length 62 cm.Condition: II -

Vergoldeter Einbund, Aufputz aus grünen Wollpompons (unvollständig), gebauchte Säule aus feinmaserigem braunen Holz, mit ca. 2 mm dickem Ebenholzfurnier belegt (Wurmlöcher), Intarsien aus poliertem Geweih mit geschwärzten Gravuren. Fein gravierter Blüten- und Blattdekor, an der verbeinten Wange eine schön gravierte Landschaft mit Burg und springendem Hirsch. Originale, im Faden laufende Nuss aus Geweih, über dem Nussfaden ein grünes Nussband aus stark beriebenem Samt. Mehrachsiges Schloss, Fadenstecher (Vergoldungsspuren) mit Klappabzug (Spannfaden unrichtig ergänzt), gegrateter eiserner Abzugsbügel. An der beinernen Kolbenkappe eine eiserne Auflage mit reliefierten Akanthusranken. Rest des alten Bolzenhalters aus Horn hinter der Nuss. Finely engraved décor of blossoms and foliage, an exquisitely engraved landscape with a castle and leaping stag on the bone-inlaid cheek. The original nut made of antler and secured with thread. A nut band of green, heavily abraded velvet above the nut thread. Multi-axle lock, hair set trigger (remnants of gilding) with folding trigger (the bridle has been incorrectly replaced), ridged iron trigger guard. An iron appliqué of acanthus tendrils in relief on the bone butt cap. A fragment of the old horn bolt channel behind the nut. Incomplete, damaged, old repairs, the iron components rusted, all parts in as-found condition. Width of the bow 59 cm, total length 59 cm. A distinguished baroque crossbow of half-powered type. From the collection of a Surrey gentleman; acquired 1970-1980.Legio XI Claudia, the eleventh legion was a unit of the Imperial Roman army, levied by Julius Caesar for his campaign against the Belgic Nervii tribe. During the turbulent period of the third century the legio had its headquarters in the Pannonia Inferior, but various detachments (vexillationes) of this legio operated in the western and eastern corners of the huge empire. Between 200 and 250 AD a vexillation was in the Pontus at Alma Kermen, while between 198-209 we have sources for another vexillation in Asia, at Aulutrene. In 297-298 AD, a vexillation of the legion followed the Emperor Diocletian in Egypt. Fine condition.

Roman bronze brooch. A large silvered bronze bow brooch of unusual form. The head is flat with integral chain loop and meets a large circular recess on the bow, which probably held a roundel of glass or bone. The foot and catchplate are in the manner of a P-shaped and crossbow brooches of the 2nd - 3rd centuries. 85mm, 30.0g.
