Ca. 618-907 AD.A mould-formed pottery tomb attendant figure that takes the form of a standing woman holding cymbals. Draped in a flowing long robe with a vibrant red-painted skirt, her upper clothing exhibits a cream hue, while a striking red shawl elegantly covers her neckline and cascades along her back. Notably, the tips of her pointed shoes emerge gracefully from the hem of her robe, adding a touch of sophistication to her appearance. This captivating figure holds a pair of cymbals in her hands, poised in front of her with a sense of musical rhythm and grace. Her countenance exudes a harmonious expression, enhanced by her smiling face framed by a meticulously crafted large hair bun. Standing gracefully upon an integral flat base, this tomb attendant figure remains in excellent condition, preserving its original paintwork and showcasing the skillful craftsmanship of the Tang Dynasty artisans. In the realm of Tang Dynasty figurines, musician representations were highly prevalent, reflecting the immense value placed on music and artistic expression. Standing and kneeling musician figurines were crafted with meticulous attention to detail, capturing the dynamic poses and musical instruments held by the performers. These figurines served as both decorative elements and spiritual companions within tomb contexts, accompanying the deceased on their eternal journey and ensuring their continued enjoyment of music in the afterlife. This piece has been precisely dated having undergone Thermo Luminescence analysis by Ralf Kotalla, an independent German Laboratory. The samples collected date the piece to the period reflected in its style, whilst also showing no modern trace elements. Its TL certificate with the full report will also accompany this lot. Size: L:350mm / W:95mm ; 1.23Kg Provenance: East Anglian private collection; formerly acquired in the early 1990s in Hong Kong.
* Grenadier Guards. Guards Mounting, St. James's Palace, circa 1790, unattributed hand-coloured engraving, 310 x 460 mm, framed and glazedQTY: (1)NOTE:A late 18th-century depiction of the Band of the Grenadier Guards, notable for its depiction of 'boy soldiers' playing drums and fifes but also for the three black musicians, exotically clad in scarlet uniforms and feathered turbans, playing drums and cymbals. It became fashionable for the smarter British regiments to have black musicians, often 'imported' from the Caribbean. The Grenadier Guards are recorded as having black musicians from 1772. The fashion for more exotic Eastern music, required more percussion instruments, especially the cymbals and drums, and if they were played by black musicians, dressed in glamorous and colourful costumes, this only added to the overall spectacle.
