Asia.- Mandeville (Sir John) Tractato bellissimo delle piu maravigliose cose & piu motabile che sitrovino nelle parte delmondo, collation: a-k8, double column, 80ff., 39 lines, Gothic type, woodcut to title depicting a group of horsemen meeting Mandeville (holding a book) at the edge of a wood, 3 woodcut printer's devices at foot of final verso, lightly washed, traces of dust-soiling to title, one minute wormhole, a few marginal repaired tears, later red morocco, gilt, by Bedford, g.e., 8vo (199 x 129mm.), Florence, [Lorenzo Morgiani], [c.1496-99].⁂ A superb, clean and complete copy of this fundamental Renaissance travel book in the Italian vernacular. ISTC records only four copies (2 Florence, Perugia (defective) and BL, to which we add a copy in Paris). The work influenced much of the travel and exploration undertaken in the late middle ages and beyond and was one of the most popular books of its kind at the time, encompassing the Holy Land, Levant, Persia, India and Far East. In 1625 Samuel Purchas thought Mandeville 'was the greatest Asian Traveller that ever the World had', next - 'if next' - to Marco Polo (Pilgrimes III/i p. 65). Little is known of Sir John Mandeville himself. He tells us that he was an English knight, that he travelled from 1322 to 1356, and he served with the Sultan of Egypt and the Great Khan. This is one of seven Italian incunable editions - the first being Milan 1480. It would undoubtedly have influenced Columbus (himself an Italian) and other travellers from northern Italy heading both east and west. "When Leonardo da Vinci moved from Milan in 1499, the inventory of his books included a number on natural history, the sphere, the heavens - indicators of some of the prime interests of that unparalleled mind. But out of the multitude of travel accounts that Leonardo could have had, in MS or from the new printing presses, there is only the one: Mandeville's Travels. At about the same time... Columbus was perusing Mandeville for information on China preparatory to his voyage; and in 1576 a copy of the Travels was with Frobisher as he lay off Baffin Bay. The huge number of people who relied on the Travels for hard, practical geographical information in the two centuries after the book first appeared demands that we give it serious attention if we want to understand the mental picture of the world of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance" (C. Moseley, ed., The Travels of Sir John Mandeville, 1983, p. 9).Literature: GW M20444; ISTC im00176500 (; Howgego M39; IGI, 6109; Lach Asia in the Making of Europe, I, pp. 77-80; Lowendahl China Illustrata Nova, 2 (1480 edition).

A.R. (13307033) (11)School of Lombardy, from the circle of students of Leonardo from Salaì,also known as “Gian Giacomo Caprotti”,ca. 1480 Milan – 1524SAINT MARY MAGDALENE Oil on panel.70 x 50.5 cm.Salaì was part of the closest circle of Leonardo da Vinci. As only a few of his paintings are assured to be by his hand it is difficult or nearly impossible to make attributions. His style of painting generally adheres to Leonardos, as is the case for many other painters of this time. Salaì, the son of the vineyard tenant of Leonardo’s estate, is said to have come to Leonardo’s workshop aged ten, mainly due to his beautiful looks and his curls. He soon became the model for several of Leonardo’s works. Salaì accompanied the master on his travels and was rumoured to have a closer relationship than just being an apprentice. Vasari, the famous artist biographer of the Renaissance, already suggested that the name Mona Lisa is an anagram of Leonardo’s “Mon Salaì”. Like many of the Lombard painters in the circle around and after Leonardo, this painting also shows corresponding stylistic characteristics. The saint is shown in three-quarter length portrait, standing to the right at a rock table, her arms crossed in front of her chest, while her long, curly hair covers the rest of her nudity. Her gaze is directed upwards, but – as in Leonardo’s works – in an ambiguous way. Her attributive grey-silver jar of ointment is placed on a stone. The striking emphasis on the magnificent curls may indicate of the connection with Salaì's own appearance.

ANDY WARHOL (Pittsburgh, USA, 1928 - New York, USA, 1987)."From de Sonaben Collection, Gagosian, 2009.Lithograph poster.Unsigned.Size: 76 x 50,5 cm.Double-sided lithograph poster with Warhol's Sonnabend Collection in the show at Gagosian New York in 2009.Warhol's Sonnabend Collection remains, to this day, one of the most iconic pieces of his work. The Gagosian wanted to create a poster for the exhibition that would be "a snapshot of the history of Warhol's art collecting".An American visual artist who became the best known representative of pop art, an artistic trend in vogue during the 1950s and 1960s that was inspired by mass culture. The son of Slovakian immigrants, he began his art studies at the Carnegie Institute of Technology between 1945 and 1949. In the latter year he began his career as an advertising cartoonist for various magazines such as Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Seventeen and The New Yorker. At the same time he painted canvases with everyday, advertising and comic themes. He soon began to exhibit in various galleries. He progressively eliminated any expressionist traits from his works until he reduced them to a serial repetition of a popular element from mass culture, the world of consumerism or the media. This evolution reached its peak of depersonalisation in 1962, when he began to use a mechanical silkscreen printing process as his working method, by means of which he systematically reproduced myths of contemporary society, the most representative examples of which are the series dedicated to Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor and Mao Tse-tung, as well as his famous treatment of Campbell's soup cans, all works produced during the fruitful decade of the 1960s. The use of mass-circulated images, easily recognisable by all kinds of audiences, such as the aforementioned soup cans or Coca-Cola bottles, became one of the most interesting and stable features of his entire output. On other occasions he crudely depicted real situations, such as accidents, street fights, funerals or suicides; within this theme, Electric chair is one of his most significant works. This appropriationism, a constant feature of the work of the supporters of Pop Art, extended to universal works of art by authors such as Raphael Sanzio, Giorgio de Chirico, Edvard Munch and Leonardo da Vinci. Through mass reproduction, he succeeded in stripping the media fetishes he used of their usual referents, turning them into stereotypical icons with a decorative meaning. In 1963 he set up the Factory, a workshop in which many of New York's underground culture gathered around him. The frivolity and extravagance that marked his way of life established a coherent line between his work and his life's trajectory; his peculiar appearance, androgynous and permanently topped with a characteristic blond fringe, ended up defining a new icon: the artist himself. He was one of the first artists to consciously exploit his image for self-promotional purposes; through a process of identification, he acquired in the eyes of the public the significance of just another advertising product. In 1963 he began a film career based on the same principles as his plastic work (such as visual reiteration), sometimes with a strong sexual and erotic content.

Vertreten in zahlreichen Museen. U. a. Pastoser Farbauftrag in gedeckter Tonalität, in dekorativem Rahmen. Mel Crawford (Canadian, B. 1925) "Italy" Signed lower right. Original watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the U.N. 20c Italy Flags of the U.N. Series stamp issued September 21, 1984. For many years, the history of Italy was the history of western civilization. Centered in the capital, Rome, the Romans built an extensive empire which included much of Europe and the Mediterranean area. The Roman Catholic Church also began in Rome . . . and the administrative center of the Church and residence of the Pope -- Vatican City -- is located at the heart of the ancient city of Rome. For more than two thousand years, Italy has produced leaders in architecture, painting, sculpture and other fine arts. Great Italian artists include Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael. The Renaissance of the arts, literature and music began and reached its highest peak in Italy . . . and during that time the city of Venice became the economic center of the Mediterranean. Known at the height of its power as the "Queen of the Adriatic," this romantic city of canals and gondolas supported successful explorers like Marco Polo. Because of the country's rich history and interesting cities like Rome and Venice, the nation has become the tourist center of modern Europe. Visitors from around the world come to see the buried city of Pompeii, to relax on the warm sunny beaches of the Mediterranean or to ski in the towering Alps and Apennines of the northern part of the country. A nation rich in history and culture and a favorite vacation spot for all of Europe -- the beautiful nation of Italy continues to be an enchanting and delightful gem of the Mediterranean Sea. Image Size: 14.75 x 12.25 in. Overall Size: 17 x 15 in. Unframed. (B08742)
