STREPPONI GIUSEPPINA (1815-1897) Italian Soprano of great renown who excelled in the Bel Canto repertoire. Strepponi was the second wife of Giuseppe Verdi and starred in many of his early operas, including the role of Abigaille in the premiere of Nabucco (1842). She retired at the very early age of 30. Her personal relationship with Verdi lasted 50 years until her death. A good A.L.S., `L´amica G. Strepponi´, three pages, 8vo, Verona, 12th December 1843, to Antonietta Donzelli, in Italian. A very interesting and early letter of good association, Strepponi stating in part `Quanto mi era spiaciuto lasciar Bologna, non lo puoi credere e specialmante per te e la tua famiglia… Dirai tante cose d´affezione al Papà Donzelli e lo pregherai a nome mio, di rammentare all´Angelo Demonio di Rossini la lettera promessa… digli se conoscesse qualcuno altro che mi favorisca, poiché non conozco quasi nessuno in Verona´ (Translation: `How sorry I was to leave Bologna, you cannot believe it and especially for you and your family… You would say so many things of affection to Papa Donzelli, and ask him in my name to remind the Angel-Demon of Rossini the promised letter… tell him if he knows someone else who favours me, since I hardly know anyone in Verona´) Strepponi further refers to a man that her correspondent knows, avoiding to mention his names, saying `Ho ricevuta un´altra lettera da Venezia dalla nota persona, uguale a quella che ti ho fatto leggere l´ultimo giorno che fui a Bologna. I have received another letter from Venice from the well-known person, same as the one I let you read on the last day I was in Bologna. I assure you that I am disheartened seeing that after almost two years of sacrifices and a life as a Slave, he repeats himself to me with incredible harshness: that I will never be his Wife, like no other woman, and that he cannot do anything for me - although he loves me very much!!´) Strepponi wonders what kind of affection is that one, saying `Domando io che razza d´affezione sia quest ache desidera ed accetta sagrifizi dagli altri, senza volerne fare alcuno!´ (Translation: `I wonder what kind of affection is this one who desires and accepts sacrifices from others, without wanting to make any!´) Further again Strepponi asks for secrecy, stating `Conserva la massima segretezza su questo affare… Mi raccomando alla Madonna, perché m´aiuti e mi meta nella posizione di non calcar mai piú quelle infami tavole del palcoscenico, e spero m´esaudisca´ (Translation: `Keep the utmost secrecy on this matter ... I commend myself to the Madonna, to help me and put me in the position of never again treading those infamous stages, and I hope she will listen to me´) Before concluding Strepponi refers to Verdi and to his opera Nabucco which she premiered a year and a half earlier, stating `Vitali ha preso alloggio senza dirmi nulla; si vede che sua moglie non era contenta di star meco. Para che vi sia qualche intenzione di chiamar Verdi a mettere in scena il Nabucco, sarebbe da una parte meglio, perché potressimo parlar chiaro´ (Translation: `Vitali has taken lodges without telling me anything; it is evident that his wife was not happy to be with me. It seems that there is some intention of calling Verdi to stage Nabucco, on the other hand it will be better, because we will be able to speak clearly´) The letter bears a Bath blind embossed seal to the upper left corner. With address leaf, postmarked and with remnants of a former red wax seal. Accompanied by a full typed transcription of the letter. Overall creasing. Public opinion here is very restless. I'm sending you this flyer. We go to direct action, as it already happened in May 1915 when no less than I32 German companies were demolished") To the base of the page and beneath his signature, Mussolini adds in his hand `P.S. Riapro la lettera. La censura ha lasciato passare. Vi faccio mandare 10 copie del Popolo. La noticia andra anche sull´Edizione romana, che quella che giunge a Firenze..´ ("Translation: "P.S. MARTI JOSE & ESTRADA PALMA TOMAS: José Martí (1853-1895) Cuban Poet, Writer and Revolutionary Philosopher. Martí is considered a national hero as well as a leading figure in Latin American literature. He became a symbol for Cuba's fight for independence in the 19th century, and is referred to as the ''Apostle of Cuban Independence''; & Tomas Estrada Palma (1835-1908) First President of Cuba 1902-1906, and previously during the Ten Year´s War. Remembered for allowing the Platt Amendment which ensured American dominance over Cuba. An exceptional and very attractive multiple signed D.S., `Jose Martí´, and `T. Estrada Palma´, four pages, large folio, New York, 10th May 1893 and 27th January 1895, to Rafael Cortes and to Manuel Ruiz, in Spanish. The partially printed document bears the printed heading of the New York delegation of the Cuban Revolutionary party, being a title given to contributors in favour of the cause, ''Patriotic Assistance - Fundraising - To finance the Independence and for the Freedom of Cuba''. The attractive document, printed in green, bears large palms to front page borders and coats of arms to the front heading and to the verso. The document is signed by Marti and Estrada Palma in their capacity as delegates and is also signed by Gonzalo de Quesada as Secretary of the delegation. The lengthy written text, entitled ''The Cuban Revolution'', is a manifesto in favour of Cuban Independence and freedom, against the Spanish occupancy and slavery, stating in part `Cuba se ha alzado en armas con el sacrificio y la solemne determinacion de la muerte, no para interrumpir con patriotismo fanatico por el ideal insuficiente de la independencia politica de España. El Desarrollo de un pueblo que hubiera podido llegar en paz a su madurez…´ (Translation: “Cuba has taken up arms with sacrifice and the with the solemn determination of death, not to interrupt with fanatical patriotism the insufficient ideal of political independence from Spain. The development of a people that could have reached maturity in peace…”) The document bears beneath the signatures a large beige paper seal affixed of the Delegation of the Cuban Revolutionary Party. To the second sheet, another title given to contributors in favour of the cause, the light image affixed to the front, shows Martí, Cespedes, Teodoro Perez, and many other revolutionary leaders at the balcony of Teodoro Perez´ home, known as La Te Da, on 1st of May 1893 in Key West. This small island was the capital of the Cuban exile at the time. Bearing to the verso an attractive map of Cuba. Small overall age wear, with a very small hole to the first sheet, not affecting the text or images. Small remnants of a former red wax seal to the verso of the second sheet. G to VG The present document is signed by Jose Marti on 23rd-27th January 1895, only a few days before drawing up the Uprising order. A month later, on 24th February, the uprising took place, and three months later Marti was killed at the battle of Dos Rios only a month after having returned to Cuba. Gonzalo de Quesada y Arostegui (1868-1915) was the key architect of Cuba´s Independence Movement with Jose Marti. Appointed Special Commissioner of Cuba to the United States in 1900. He later entered the diplomatic service, becoming Minister to the United States. De Quesada authored ''A History of Free Cuba'' (1898) and ''Cuba'' (1905). He also edited Marti's literary works 1900-11. In the early 1890s, Key West's poet-patriot hero Jose Martí started visiting the island, raising money and trying to unite the different exile groups that wanted to overthrow Cuba's Spanish rulers. There was a routine every time Martí came to town. It was like a holiday in town. About 5,000 people would go to the port to wait for him. There was a music band in San Carlos called La Banda Libertad (“The Freedom Band”), a band that would go to the port. The port was full of American and Cuban flags. They would parade him down Duval Street from the port, past the San Carlos, all the way to La Te Da. That is why that place is called La Te Da, because the Cubans would call that place Martí's Terrace, “La Terraza de Martí". And that name got shortened to La Te Da. In the same way as Key West became Key West from Cayo Hueso. Today La Te Da is a guesthouse that hosts drag shows and tea dances. Back then, it was the home of Teodoro Perez, a cigar factory owner and friend of Martí.

A Chinese Imperial blue glazed ritual offering vessel and cover, gui, moulded Qianlong seal mark and of the period (1736-95), modelled on a bronze grain receptacle of the Eastern Zhou dynasty, of oblong form, moulded in low relief with bands of archaic motifs, flanked by a pair of elephant-head loop handles, the cover with a more vivid blue glaze moulded with an archaistic chilong amid clouds, with four butterfly wing-shaped finials which act as supports when upturned, relief moulded zhuanshu script seal marks to the underside of the vessel and the cover ‘Da Qing Qianlong Nianzhi’, 28.5cm wide, one finial broken. This gui would have been part of an altar set used in state rituals held in the first lunar month of the year, during which the emperor made offerings to heaven at the Altar for Bountiful Harvest (Qigutan), part of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing and would have comprised also a pair of dou, fu and xing-shaped vessels. Similarly composed sets with archaistic designs would have been made in claire de lune, yellow and red glazes for ritual use in the Altars of the Moon, Earth and Sun, respectively. For a related set of the Qianlong period but in clair-de-lune glaze from the Palace Museum, Beijing, see E.S. Rawski and J. Rawson, eds., China: The Three Emperors 1662-1795, London, 2005, pp.125 and 396-397, pls.34-37, where it is noted that the archaistic shape of these sets was not designed until 1748, when the Qianlong emperor ordered the Grand Secretaries to consult classical texts when designing objects, and insisted that he approve their designs before manufacturing could begin. The objects were illustrated and described in The Illustrated Regulations for Ceremonial Paraphernalia of the Qing Dynasty (Huangchao liqi tushi). A RARE PAIR OF MING-STYLE GREEN-ENAMELED 'DRAGON' BOWLS, KANGXI PERIODChina, 1662-1722. Each with deep rounded sides supported on a short foot and rising to an everted rim, the exterior finely incised with two five-clawed dragons amid flames and clouds, reserved on the biscuit and covered with green enamel, the interior similarly decorated with three clouds.Provenance: From an old German private collection, acquired in 1980 and thence by descent in the same family. German trade, acquired from the above. Condition: Excellent condition with only very minor old wear and some firing irregularities.Weight: 338 g and 345.9 g (excl. stands) Dimensions: Diameter 18.7 and 18.9 cmThe recessed bases each with an apocryphal underglaze-blue six-character mark da Ming Chenghua nianzhi within a double circle. Each bowl with a finely carved zitan stand, dating from the Qing dynasty. (4)Imperial porcelain bowls decorated with green-enameled dragons first appeared in the Chenghua period, with and sometimes without reign marks, and either enameled with dragons over the glaze or over the biscuit. More were manufactured in later periods of the Ming dynasty, particularly during the Hongzhi and Zhengde reigns, where they were always inscribed with their corresponding reign marks. This motif, which is also found on matching saucer dishes, required each vessel to be fired twice: First the design was incised on the biscuit and covered with a layer of wax, which would melt during the first firing and reveal the pinkish buff body underneath. This was later filled with green enamel and fired a second time at a much lower temperature. The result is rather spectacular, because the dragons appear as if they are literally leaping off the surface of the bowls.Literature comparison: For the Chenghua prototype of this design, see two bowls with dragons enameled over the biscuit silhouettes, in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, included in the Museum's exhibition Chenghua ciqi tezhan (Special Exhibition of Ch'eng-Hua Porcelain Ware), Taipei, 2003, cat. nos. 110 and 111. Porcelain wares decorated with green dragons continued to be produced in the Qing dynasty, from the Kangxi to the Guangxu reigns, such as a dish with an apocryphal Hongzhi mark, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Miscellaneous Enameled Porcelains, Plain Tricolour Porcelains. The Complete Collection of Treasures in the Palace Museum, Shanghai, 2009, pl. 75. Furthermore, compare with entry 5 in Marchant, 90th Anniversary Exhibition, Qing Porcelain from Private Collections. AN IRON-RED AND GILT-DECORATED TRIPOD CENSER, DAOGUANG MARK, CHINA, 1840-1940Expert's note: Looking at the missing white space inside the leaves for example, this looks like a typical work from circa 1880-1920. However, some aspects of the decor are really fine, especially the fine gilt and the subtly degrading nuances of the iron red, so there is a remote chance that this is a bit earlier, possibly even late in the Daoguang period. The globular body with upright curling handles standing on three bulbous short legs, decorated in shades of iron-red enamel with leafy lotus and ribbon-tied Eight Buddhist Emblems in a continuous meander, between borders of linked ruyi-heads and key-fret scrolls. A FINE FAMILLE ROSE PLAQUE DEPICTING WANG ZHAOJUN, QING DYNASTYChina, 1644-1912. Exquisitely painted in bright enamels with Wang Zhaojun in a cold winter landscape with gnarled barren branches, bamboo leaves, craggy rockwork, and towering mountains partly obscured in the fog, shrouding herself in her voluminous robes, a youthful attendant walking behind her and carrying her silk-covered pipa, both with well-detailed, expressive faces of reddened complexion.Provenance: English trade, previously in an English private estate. Condition: Very good condition with some wear and expected firing irregularities, minor fritting to edges, and a small chip to one corner.Dimensions: Size 50.5 x 32.5 cmWang Qian, commonly known by her courtesy name Wang Zhaojun, was known as one of the Four Beauties of ancient China. Born in Baoping Village, Zigui County (in current Hubei Province) in the Western Han dynasty (206 BC-8 AD), she was sent by Emperor Yuan to marry Chanyu Huhanye of the Xiongnu Empire in order to establish friendly relations with the Han dynasty through marriage. The present plaque depicts Wang's journey north across the steppe.Wang Zhaojun was endowed with dazzling beauty and an extremely intelligent mind. She was adept in playing the pipa and was also a master of the ancient 'Four Arts of the Chinese Scholar' - the guqin, weiqi, calligraphy, and Chinese painting. Although Zhaojun was a concubine in the harem of Emperor Yuan (Han Yuandi, reigned 48-32 BC), he had never noticed her. One reason was that she refused to bribe a painter, Mao Yanshou, so his painting of her did not do her justice. As a result, when a Central Asian nomad prince named Huhanye came looking for a bride, the Emperor volunteered her (by another account she was so desperate that she volunteered herself). She then had to spend the rest of her life in the barren lands of Central Asia. When her husband died, she was married to her stepson, as custom dictated. She requested permission from Han Emperor Cheng to return home, but he refused.A set of tombs near the Inner Mongolian capital, Hohhot, is said to include the grave of Wang Zhaojun. The grave is mentioned as early as the Tang dynasty, by which time stories of Wang Zhaojun had become very popular. There are a number of poems about her. Most of them are sad, dwelling on her desire to return home. Typical is this poem by Li Bai, which at the end mentions her grave:The moon above the Han palace and land of Qin, Sheds a flood of silvery light, bidding Mingfei ("the radiant lady") farewell. She sets out on the road of the Jewel Gate, a road she will not travel back. The moon above the Han palace rises from the eastern seas, But the radiant lady wed in the west will return nevermore. On the Mongolian mountains flowers are made of the long winter's snow, The moth-eyebrowed one, broken-hearted, lies buried in the desert sand. Living she lacked the gold, and so her portrait was distorted, Dying she leaves a green mound, which moves all the world to pity. Delicately potted with deep rounded sides rising from a short foot to a flared rim, superbly enameled around the exterior with a red-flowering peach tree with small blossoms among scant leaves, representing the third month, the reverse inscribed in underglaze blue with a poem followed by a seal mark, the recessed base with an underglaze-blue six-character mark da Qing Kangxi nianzhi and of the period.Inscriptions: To one side, 'Fenghua xinshe yan / shijie jiuchun nong' (The swallow returns when the blossoms sway in the breeze / It is the season in late spring when farmers return to their fields). One seal, 'Shang' (appreciation). Provenance: From the collection of Carl Gustav Kjellin, acquired in Shanghai during the 1940s, and thence by descent in the family. Carl Gustav Kjellin (1910-1990) was a Swedish diplomat who was stationed in China until 1945 and thereafter at the Swedish embassy in Tokyo. He acquired most of his collection of Chinese porcelain and works of art during his time in Asia. Condition: Perfect condition with only minor wear. Minimal firing irregularities, including a microscopic glaze blister of less than 2 mm to the rim. Weight: 28.5 g Dimensions: Diameter 6.5 cmThis finely potted cup is one of the so-called 'month cups', made at the imperial kilns during the Kangxi reign. One was made for each month of the lunar calendar. As in the case of the current example, these cups are so thinly potted that the blue of the inscription on the exterior can be seen through the porcelain from the interior of the vessel. Their decoration is characterized by very delicately painted decoration in underglaze blue and wucai enamels. Each of the cups has on one side a floral design appropriate to a particular month, and on the other side a poem which complements the design. Each of the cups also bears an underglaze blue seal character after the poem, which can be read as 'shang' (appreciation).Literature comparison: Compare a closely related cup included in the Oriental Ceramic Society exhibition Enamelled Polychrome Porcelain of the Manchu Dynasty (1644-1912), London, 1951, cat. no. 253. The Percival David Foundation in London has one of the few complete sets of cups for all twelve months, now in the collection of the British Museum, registration number PDF.815. The design on the current cup is very similar to the third month cup in the Percival David Foundation and bears the same poem, see Rosemary Scott, For the Imperial Court - Qing Porcelain from the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, New York, 1997, pp. 82-83, no. 23. The Palace Museum, Bejing owns at least two sets, illustrated in Chugoku toji zenshu (Complete works on Chinese ceramics), Kyoto, 1981-86, vol. 21, pl. 61, and in Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong - Qing Porcelain from the Palace Museum Collection, Hong Kong, 1989, page 65, no. 48. While the Qianlong Emperor abdicated in 1795, when he assumed the title of the Emperor Emeritus, the works of art produced during the early Jiaqing period retain many stylistic qualities of the Qianlong period. It is commonly agreed that this period of transition lasts between 1796-1798. Literature comparison: Compare three Qianlong washers imitating shells illustrated in Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong. A RARE COPPER-RED GLAZED WATER POT, PINGGUO ZUN, KANGXI MARK AND PROBABLY OF THE PERIOD (1662-1722)Expert's note: The present lot clearly distinguishes itself from the usual late 19th century wares by its magnificent crushed strawberry glaze, which is well-controlled and even, only mutating to a fine liver tone in two distinct areas. Also note the remarkable pale celadon corona circling the foot, another obvious hallmark of an early 18th-century glaze.Of classic pingguo zun form, the compressed globular body deeply depressed after the wide shoulders to create an overturned channel and rising to a low waisted neck and lipped rim. The exterior covered with a rich glaze of crushed-strawberry tone thinning to a paler shade at the shoulder and to a distinct pale celadon corona circling the foot, the sides with two circular patches of a darker liver-red tone. The rim, interior, and base covered in a transparent glaze. The recessed base with an underglaze-blue six-character mark da Qing Kangxi nianzhi and probably of the period.Provenance: From a noted private collection in Geneva, Switzerland, assembled since the 1960s, and thence by descent. An important part of this collection was on permanent loan and exhibited over several decades at the Asia-Africa Museum in Geneva. The base lacquered with an old inventory number, 'AMA-2866', and further with two old labels, one reading 'Art Ancien de Chine & Extrême-Orient Geneve. Kang Shi. 1662-1722. 2866' and the other inscribed with further inventory numbers. The wood stand with two old labels, 'AMA 2866' and '4096/2 […] imperiale'. According to the collector's personal notes, the present lot was acquired on 30 April 1973 from Wing Po Chai (probably in Hong Kong). A copy of the corresponding entry in the collector's notebook accompanies this lot.Condition: Very good condition with expected old wear and minor firing irregularities, minute fritting and small smoothened areas to the foot, probably inherent to the manufacture. The glaze with an unctuous feel and subtle luster overall.Weight: 249.6 g (excl. stand) Dimensions: Diameter 9.5 cm (at the widest points)With a finely carved and open worked wood stand. (2)Water pots for washing brushes were designed to be placed on a Chinese scholar's desk. This form is known as pingguo zun (apple jar), of which there are two variations: ones with a short waisted neck and lipped rim, such as the present lot, and ones with an incurved rounded neck. The form of the present lot is the classic, earlier, and considerably rarer variation. The use of copper-red glaze at Jingdezhen was revived by the Kangxi Emperor after a decline in usage during the late 15th century. With the effort to reproduce classic Ming jihong ('sacrificial red') porcelains, Qing copper-red pieces quickly outnumbered their Ming counterparts. Nigel Wood in Chinese Glazes, London, 1999, p. 180, notes how the French Jesuit missionary, François Xavier d'Entrecolles (1664-1741), wrote letters giving detailed accounts of the copper-red production at Jingdezhen, the sourcing of the copper for the glaze, the recipes and the kiln location of the firing of these wares. Pere d'Entrecolles was aware of the difficulties involved in the making of copper-red wares and his account confirms the high level of technical knowledge of the potters at Jingdezhen.Literature comparison: Compare a water pot of closely related form, covered with a peach bloom glaze, 9.5 cm diameter, with a Kangxi mark and of the period, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 29.100.331, illustrated by Suzanne G. A BLACK STONE FIGURE OF DURGA MAHISHASURAMARDINI, PRE-ANGKOR PERIOD, KHMER, 7TH CENTURYOpinion: Looking at Phnom Da style sculptures, one can see a great degree of cross-cultural influence. While one could argue that this sculptural style is distinctly of Khmer origin, with such early sites present in Vietnam, we are more likely seeing the spread of sources of foreign cultural influence, bringing things like Hinduism, coming from outside the region and merging with local cultures. Certain attributes of this sculpture in particular can be seen in early Gupta sculpture, such as the 4th century Harihara in the National Museum of New Delhi. It is also interesting to note that the earliest known written texts in Southeast Asia are from Vietnam, written during the 4th century, predating the first Khmer texts by hundreds of years.Finely carved in relief with four arms holding symbols of power, positioned above the severed head of a buffalo, with a tall crown and pendulous earlobes, backed by a striated nimbus.Provenance: Spink & Son, London, by 2 November 1999 (according to Christie's record). (2)Mahishasura was a shape-shifting king who was granted the power of immortality by Lord Brahma. After years of tormenting his people, he was vanquished by a manifestation of the demon-fighting form of Parvati known as Durga. Durga fought Mahishasura over a period of fifteen days during which he kept changing his shape into different animals. She finally vanquished him when he took the form of a buffalo, slaying him with her trident. It is just after this victorious moment that we see Durga depicted here, with the severed head of Mahishasura laying at Durga's feet and her four arms holding the conch shell, the wheel, the ball, and the club, symbolizing the powers given to her by Vishnu. It is an ancient story of good versus evil.Literature comparison:Compare with a stone image of a female deity from the Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture, exhibited in Arts of Ancient Viet Nam: From River Plain to Open Sea at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, both statues showing an unusual and rare striated nimbus. Also, compare with a stone image of a reclining figure of Vishnu in the Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture, both statues showing very similar facial characteristics.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely RelatedAuction: Christie's New York, 13 September 2016, lot 249Price: USD 21,250 or approx.
