Seven South African Photographers: SOUTH AFRICA: THE CORDONED HEART (Portfolio of signed original photographs) 10 photographic prints in window mounts with tissue guards signed in pencil by each photographer on the back. The photographs measure 405 x 300 mm and the mounts 510 x 405 mm. With a four page introductory text and list and captions for the photographs. Contained in a fold-down back case of crimson cloth with black titling on the upper cover and spine, 550 x 430 mm. Number 5 of an edition limited to 14 copies. The colophon reads: SEVEN SOUTH AFRICAN PHOTOGRAPHERS. Joseph Alphers, Omar Badsha, David Goldblatt, Chris Ledechowski, Ben Maclennan, Wendy Schwegmann, Paul Weinberg. Photographs printed in South Africa by Alex Harris. Portfolio designed by Margaret Sartor. South Africa: The Cordoned Heart is jointly produced by the Center for Documentary Photography at Duke University and the Center for Documentary Photography at the University of Cape Town. The photographs are selected from essays submitted in 1984 to the Second Carnegie inquiry into Poverty and Development in South Africa. The enquiry was established by Carnegie Corporation of New York in 1982 at the University of Cape Town. Its aim is to document the conditions of poverty in South Africa and surrounding states, to analyze the causes and consequences of poverty, and to devise strategies to deal with poverty and injustice in the region. The photographers and producers of this portfolio are donating half the proceeds from its sale to help support the activities of the newly formed Center for Documentary Photography at the University of Cape Town. This portfolio produced in conjunction with a book, South Africa: The Cordoned Heart, published in the United States by W.W. Norton & Company, New York, 1986, in association with the Center for Documentary Photography at Duke University; and travelling exhibitions in South Africa, Great Britain, Germany and the United States. Exhibitions toured by the Second Carnegie Inquiry in Poverty and Development in Southern Africa, Christian Aid, OXFAM, The Photographer’s Gallery in London and the International Center of Photography in New York. The Portfolio includes ten, signed, black and white photographs, archivally processed and printed in South Africa in the fall of 1985. The prints are matted with four-ply 100% rag museum board and packaged in a specially designed case. Prince Charle’s Dean’s Rag Book Co. Chimp, circa 1955, a Tru-to-Life Chimp with rubber face, hands and feet, black synthetic plush, wearing white cotton shirt with Eton collar and red felt trousers, in original display case - 19¼in (49cm) high. This actual chimp has come from the Dean’s Archive and appears in Dean’s of Yesterday, page 119/120; by repute he was one of a pair produced, the first presented to Prince Charles, the other retained by Deans
A rare Dean’s Rag Book Co. Claude golfing Rabbit with interesting Royal Provenance, 1939, with white wool plush head, ears and hands, very unusual metal and plastic rotating googlie-eyes, pink velvet nose, pink felt ear linning, swivel head, wired limbs with integral velvet striped top, black and cream plaid plus-fours and matching cap, large pink felt golfing shoes and matching scarf - 16¾in (42.5cm) high (some repairs to shirt, slight damage to shoes, discoloured and missing golf bag); a photograph of Florence with her two dogs; and a letter of provenance. Provenance: This rabbit known as Georgie was given to Florence Beatrice Hart in 1939, by Lieutenant John Patrick Bowes-Lyon, Master of Glamis, b.1910, k.in action 19 Sept 1941 (1st cousin of the Queen). Notes: the rabbit’s clothes look remarkably like the abdicated King Edward VIII’s famous plus-fours, it is possible that this toy is a parody of the former King REVISED VERSION OF THIS PROVENANCE AVAILABLE ON REQUEST FROM SAS

Coronation Mickey Mouse, with printed white and black velveteen head, boot button eyes, felt ears, blue body and red integral shorts, wire framed body and yellow velvet hands and shoes, circa 1937 - 8¼in (21cm) high (repairs to soles of feet and fading). This mouse was produced for the Coronation of King George VI

Brumus and Ivy polar bear, 1950, Ivy the mother bear with white mohair, brown and black plastic eyes, leather nose and label on bottom - 18in (46cm) high; baby Brumas with white wool plush and label in back seam; (heat damage to left eyes and a little wear) and a book on Brumas - Brumas was the first Polar Bear bred in London Zoo on 27 November 1949

Dean`s Rag Book `Miss Betty Oxo` Cloth Doll, c.1920s: having moulded face with painted features, side glancing eyes, brown mohair wig, green velvet coat with faux fur trim and ribbon, matching felt and velvet hat with ribbon, green velvet legs with Dean`s button to thighs, integrated black shoes with three buttons to side, white cotton undergarment. Height 44cm. VG condition with some fading, a couple of brown marks to rear, and label to foot missing. This doll was offered in exchange for 480 Oxo cube wrappers, and comes complete with the `Little Miss Oxo Doll Competition` card.
A rare large 1930s shop display Deans Ragbook Teddy Bear Band, comprising two Teddy bears, two white rabbits and two rubber faced monkeys, all dressed in red and green felt band uniforms, all have white rubber hands, with two trumpets, one drum and stick, one accordion, a baton and four wooden chairs (five have labels to the right foot, Made in England by Deans Rag Book Co. Ltd London) (53.3cm/21" standing) (rubber is brittle in areas). (7) Provenance: Previously sold in Sotheby`s London, Tuesday 19th September 1989. Catalogue included.

In the 1950`s developed from figuration to abstraction. He said that any titles on his pictures were "meant to be interpreted as poetry, to engender a state of mind rather than describe exactly what the particular picture is". Showed with Free Painters and Sculptors, of which he was a fellow and with New English Art Club. Exhibited at the Royal Academy regularly from 1950; London Group and had several one-man shows. Represented in many public collections including Imperial War Museum, Bradford City Art Gallery and Balliol College, Oxford. In 1960 his poetry A Rag Book of Love was published.
