James Dean - a large lifesize 1/1 scale statue / figure of Dean depicted in his trademark leather jacket and jeans. Fibreglass construction, mounted on a squared plinth base. Free standing. Measures approx: 184cm tall. James Byron Dean (1931-1955) was an American actor. In a career spanning five years, he is regarded as a cultural icon of teenage disillusionment and social estrangement, as expressed in the title of his most celebrated film, Rebel Without a Cause (1955), in which he starred as troubled teenager Jim Stark. The other two roles that defined his stardom were loner Cal Trask in East of Eden (1955) and surly ranch hand Jett Rink in Giant (1956).
RMS Titanic - an original commemorative stamp cover autographed by RMS Titanic Disaster survivors Millvina Dean (Youngest Survivor) and her Brother, Bertram Dean. Both signed neatly in blue and black in respectively. Total size approx; 11x16cm. The Deans' parents decided to leave the United Kingdom and emigrate to the United States; they were planning to move to Wichita, Kansas, where her father had relatives, and his cousin owned a tobacco shop that he was going to co-own. They were not supposed to be aboard the new White Star Line ship RMS Titanic, but due to a coal strike, they were transferred onto it and boarded it as third-class passengers at Southampton, England. Millvina Dean was barely two months old when she boarded the ship along with her parents and brother. Her father felt its collision with the iceberg on the night of 14 April 1912, and after investigating, returned to his cabin, telling his wife to dress the children and go up on deck. Millvina, her mother, and her brother were placed in Lifeboat 10 and were among the first third-class passengers to escape. Her father did not survive, and his body, if recovered, was never identified.

DAVID GAULD R.S.A. (SCOTTISH 1865-1936) ELEGANT FIGURES IN THE STREET, CHELTENHAM Signed and inscribed, pen and ink and watercolourDimensions:35cm x 25cm (13.75in x 9.75in)Provenance:Provenance: The Glasgow Art ClubNote: Note: David Gauld is best known for his depictions of sun-dappled cattle in byres or Ayrshire fields. However, in his early career Gauld was an innovator within the radical group of artists known as the Glasgow Boys. Gauld trained at the Glasgow School of Art between 1882 and 1885. In the late 1880s he made a name for himself as an illustrator for The Glasgow Weekly Citizen. It was during his time sharing a studio with fellow artist Harrington Mann (1864-1937) and then at 351 Renfrew Street that he honed his painting. As an artist he was immersed in the city’s artistic community - an apprenticeship with Stephen Adam taught him skills in stained glass and later a close friendship with Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) linked him with the applied arts. In the late 1930s he was appointed Director of Design at the Glasgow School of Art.Elegant Figures in the Street, Cheltenham is an extremely rare work showing both the artist’s ability in watercolour and his skilled draughtsmanship at the turn of the century. Gauld was familiar with figurative work, during the 1890s he painted stylised portraits with exuberant paint handling and strong use of colour (see The New Bonnet sold by Lyon & Turnbull on 31 May 2012, lot 133).Although the figures in Elegant Figures in the Street, Cheltenham are not identified they may well be friends of the artist and members of the art world. A companion work Broadway (National Galleries of Scotland, PG2704) depicts the artist couple Robert Macaulay Stevenson and Stansmore Macaulay Stevenson (née Dean), alongside Margaret Gauld (née Paterson). Much like Gauld’s figurative stained glass and early work in oil painting, this watercolour has a strong narrative comparable to the social reflection done by other members of the Glasgow School – notably the figurative work by E. A. Walton and Sir John Lavery of the Helensburgh bourgeoisie in the late 1880s. The Eastern influence in the flat composition and the opacity of colour draws from the highly fashionable Japanese print at the end of the nineteenth century. The work can also be closely associated with the artist’s own preparatory cartoons for stained glass window designs.Gauld enjoyed membership of the illustrious Glasgow Art Club and it is thought that the work was gifted by his widow to the Club on his death.

Dean Ellis (American, 1920 - 2009) "Robert E. Lee" Signed middle right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for The Shapers of America series issued in 1987. Distinguished in family, in presence, and in character, he seemed to have every virtue. His father was the famous "Lighthorse Harry" Lee of Revolutionary fame. His wife was the great-granddaughter of Martha Washington. He presided over a magnificent Arlington estate. He went through West Point without a single demerit and served with distinction in the Mexican War. He was -- almost inevitably -- Superintendent of West Point Academy. Robert E. Lee was, indeed, an ardent patriot, devoted to the Union. But when Beauregard fired on Fort Sumter, Lee made the only decision he could, siding with his home state and the cause of its people. But, throughout the war, he was free of any private hostility. He referred to the Union troops as "those people," not the enemy. As Commander in Chief of the Army of Northern Virginia, he proved himself a brilliant combat general and skillful strategist, loved by subordinates and soldiers alike. "I would go through Hell for General Lee," Stonewall Jackson said. Against odds sometimes of two to one, Lee repeatedly took the offensive, and shattered one Union Army after another. "It is well war is so terrible," he said, "else we should get too fond of it." When he was forced to surrender, Lee bade farewell to those who had been "faithful to the last." "Take satisfaction in the consciousness of duty faithfully performed," he said. After his retirement, Lee was appointed President of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia.Image Size: 18 x 21 in. Dean Ellis (New York, 1920 - 2009) "Jefferson Davis" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for The Shapers of America series issued in 1987. A graduate of West Point, Jefferson Davis had fought in the Black Hawk War and served with distinction in the Mexican War. He served as Secretary of War under President Pierce and President Zachary Taylor. Kentucky born, he moved to Mississippi and there served as Congressman, Senator, and then returned to the Senate to be the leading spokesman for States Rights. When the seceding States met at Montgomery, Alabama to establish the Confederate States of America, they chose Davis as President of the new nation. As a wartime president, he was respected, and proved to be as able, decisive, wise in his choice of generals and of diplomats as could be expected. But, under the Confederate Constitution, he was unable to impose national law or use the judiciary system in the absence of a Supreme Court. Inevitably all of his -- and the South's -- expectations were disappointed: Britain did not intervene, the North rallied around Lincoln; internal lines of communication did not allow the vastly outnumbered Confederates to shift their forces easily and, most importantly, Lincoln finally found generals -- Grant and Sherman -- who could hold their own with Lee and his lieutenants. After Appomattox, Davis sought to flee, but was captured and briefly imprisoned for treason. But he was never brought to trial. He spent his last years writing a history of the Confederate States of America.Image Size: 18 x 21 in. Overall Size: 24 x 27 in. Unframed. (B10591)
