Minor scratch in field before Jupiter, otherwise good fine, rare £200-£300 --- Provenance: SF 419 A rare type of Pompey’s, this coin commemorates his military achievements, specifically the wars against the Mediterranean pirates and Mithradates of Pontus, as illustrated by the eagle, imagery associated with the land and sky, and a dolphin, the sea. Sear notes that many examples of this type, and other types bearing this obverse type, are likely contemporary forgeries, making this coin particularly desirable.

Cossutius Maridianus, caesar parens patriae, wreathed and veiled head right, lituus before, apex behind, rev. moneyer’s name arranged in the form of a cross, a a a ff in angles, 3.64g/1h (Ghey 299.2, this coin; Craw. 480/19; BMCRR 4187-88; RSC 8; Sear 113). Roman Imperatorial Coinage, Post Second Triumvirate, Mark Antony, Denarius, Military mint moving with Antony, possibly Patrae, autumn 32-spring 31 BC, ant avg iii [–] around, galley right, with rowers, a mast with banners placed at the prow, rev. leg ii across lower field between two standards, aquila upright in the middle, 3.29g/6h (Ghey 329.1, this coin; Craw. 544/14; BMCRR East 191; RSC 27; Sear 349). Well centred and fine £60-£80 --- Provenance: SF 355 The final major coinage issued by Mark Antony was this, the legionary series. Due to the reduced silver content in these denarii, they circulated well beyond even Nero’s great debasement of Roman coinage. This series was produced specifically to be paid to his army and navy on the lead up to the Battle of Actium on the 2nd of September 31 BC, and was produced in excessive quantities. Twenty three legions were honoured on these coin types, most of which are seen throughout this hoard.
