Roman Imperatorial Coinage, Post Second Triumvirate, Mark Antony, Denarius, Military mint moving with Antony, possibly Patrae, autumn 32-spring 31 BC, ant avg iii [–] around, galley right, with rowers, a mast with banners placed at the prow, rev. leg ii across lower field between two standards, aquila upright in the middle, 3.29g/6h (Ghey 329.1, this coin; Craw. 544/14; BMCRR East 191; RSC 27; Sear 349). Well centred and fine £60-£80 --- Provenance: SF 355 The final major coinage issued by Mark Antony was this, the legionary series. Due to the reduced silver content in these denarii, they circulated well beyond even Nero’s great debasement of Roman coinage. This series was produced specifically to be paid to his army and navy on the lead up to the Battle of Actium on the 2nd of September 31 BC, and was produced in excessive quantities. Twenty three legions were honoured on these coin types, most of which are seen throughout this hoard.
