circa 1940, the signed customised white dial, 42mm diameter, with seconds base indication, signed 16 jewel chronometer rated crown wind movement calibre Eb 18500 with pumpkin shaped winder and contact at 8 o'clock, case, 50mm diameter, verso hinged at 6 o'clock, plain and polished, interior signed and numbered 201765, the cuvette similarly numbered and additionally engraved CHRONOMETRE EBERHARD & CO, presented in a fitted bottle-green and gilt tooled standing caseIn the late 1930s, Jean L'Eplattenier, in La Chaux-de-Fonds, devised a revolutionary instrument to quickly conduct a comparative check on the level of oscillations in a watch movement. Patented in 1940, his invention greatly speeded up the testing of watches and is now considered the forerunner of today's digital chrono comparators. It operated by comparing itself to the watch being tested. Once set up it would 'read' the running data of the test watch and compare it to itself, and, if it showed different values, the test watch would be adjusted accordingly. Depending on the watch to be tested, either the "Coïncidence" model on a 15-second base - as this example - or the "Coïncidence" model on a 30-second base was used.(With grateful thanks to Sabina Ahmetovic at Eberhard & Co. S.A. La Chaux-de-Fonds, for her kind assistance in the research of this lot)
circa 2005, model number 52 N6 1460.1, serial number 1312906, the signed rectangular black dial, 20mm wide, upper half with pink circular minute track, pink single hand and digital trapezoid jump hour aperture at 12 o'clock, the lower with subsidiary circular date indicator and offset running seconds register, signed but unnumbered 17 jewel mechanical crown wind movement, decorated with 'The Côtes de Genève' and with date adjusting pusher below the crown, convex case, 30mm wide, front bezel polished, verso with 4 screws and exhibition back, the border engraved 1312906 DELIRIUM - LA NUIT ASIS SWISS MADE 18K together with Swiss national mark and convention marks for 18ct gold, to the original signed black alligator strap, the signed pin buckle with Swiss national mark and convention mark for 18ct gold‘Delirium’ was a line of ultra-thin watches, first introduced in 1979, and marketed by Concord, Eterna, IWC, and Longines.By the mid-1970s, Japanese watch companies were producing thin, reliable quartz movements and the Swiss companies were being left behind in terms of technology and sales.American businessman, Gerry Grinberg, responsible for Piaget’s ultra thin mechanical watches, had seen his market share eroded by Seiko and Citizen who had introduced ultra thin quartz watches, thinner than any of his mechanical versions. He approached Swiss watchmakers, challenging them to make a world-beating ultra-thin movement before they lost the entire market to the Japanese and offered 2 million Swiss Francs if they could produce an ultra thin quartz movement for use in his Concord watch brand. On January 12th 1979, four Swiss watch companies - Concord, Eterna, IWC, and Longines - announced the world's thinnest watch, just 1.98 mm thick with the movement built directly into the rectangular watch case. The watch was branded ‘Delirium’. Concord used the name for their models, which were focused on the American market, with the other three companies branding under different names.Further versions were produced, all with quartz movements, including the Delirium IV, which, at just 0.98mm thick, remains the thinnest watch ever made.In 2005, Concord introduced a mechanical Delirium model – this example – which, although much thicker than the original, still retained the same distinctive style and rectangular case of the original quartz versions.Case: Good condition. Some very minor surface scratches, and very minor nicks commensurate with wear. Crystal complete with no obvious sign of damage. Strap with minor wear.Dial: Good condition, no obvious sign of damage.Movement: In working order, but not tested for timekeeping.
circa 2007, model number 318.Y.70, the double ellipse engine turned dial, 31mm wide, upper half with signed polished cover, lower with curved blue chapter marked for the minutes, central running seconds register and digital trapezoid jump hour aperture at 12 o'clock, 27 jewel mechanical automatic movement calibre DR115 with 45 hour power reserve, decorated with 'The Côtes de Genève', the signed yellow rotor with decorative 'wave' engraving, case, 41mm wide, stepped bezel and shaped sides, plain and polished, verso with six pentagon head screws and exhibition back, the border engraved 'DANIEL ROTH LIMITED EDITION NUMERO 21/80 318.Y.70', 2 o'clock lug with Swiss national mark, Chaux-de-Fonds, 4 o'clock lug stamped DR, 10 o'clock lug with convention mark for platinum, 8 o'clock lug stamped PT950, to the original dark blue/black leather strap, the liveried deployant clasp with convention marks for 18ct gold and Swiss national mark, Geneva, presented in the original case with outer card box, instruction booklet and undated guarantee certificateThe curiously shaped watches of Daniel Roth immediately catch the attention.Roth was born into a watchmaking family in Nice, France. His grandfather and great-grandfather were both watchmakers and, following in their footsteps, he attended a three-year watchmaking course.Upon completion, he worked with several Swiss watch companies, including Jaeger-LeCoultre, Chaumet and Audemars Piguet. In 1973, he was instrumental in the revival of the French watch brand, Breguet, and stayed with the brand for fourteen years. In 1988, Roth launched his own brand and by 1992 he was already employing twelve watchmakers. However, production numbers were small, driven by the brand’s commitment to traditional production methods - for example, hand-finishing dials and painstakingly decorating movements. In 1994, he took on external investment and the new investors increased production numbers. Despite not being a majority shareholder anymore, Roth himself still remained involved. The company was eventually sold outright to Bulgari, with Daniel Roth leaving shortly after.A high level of hand-finishing is a feature of his work, from the dials to the movements themselves. He often chose to highlight this by creating open-work and hand-engraved versions of his models. He introduced a completely different case shape - one of his signature elements - and these were produced in yellow, rose and white gold, as well as platinum and occasionally steel. The dial variations were numerous, integrating colours from salmon to electric blue, with various different combinations found throughout his body of work.Today, Roth produces one-off creations, working closely with his wife and son, completing around three pieces a year.Case: Good condition. Some very minor surface scratches. Clasp fully functional. Crystal complete with no obvious sign of damage. Strap with minor wear.Dial: Good condition, no obvious sign of damage.Movement: In working order, though not tested for timekeeping.
A 19th century two day mahogany marine chronometerSigned 'Eleve de' Parkinson & Frodsham London #537The three part case with blank brass cartouche to the top lid, the centre section with brass flower button above a later ivory signature plaque, the lower section with inlaid brass escutcheon with an ivory number plaque below and folding handles to the sides. The 3.25 inch silvered Roman dial enclosed by an Arabic minute band, subsidiary power reserve from 0-48 at XII and observatory style seconds dial at VI, signed eleve de Parkinson & Frodsham London No. 537 below the gold spade hands. The spotted movement with four ringed pillars and maintaining power to the chain fusee, free sprung blued steel helical balance spring with diamond endstone and Earnshaw type escapement, cut and compensated bimetallic balance with circular timing weights, with typical bayonet-fitting sprung dust cap in a weighted, scratch-numbered gimballed bowl. Ticking with two winding keys and a case key. 15.5 x 15.5 x 16Footnotes:Purchased 16 August 2002 from Gerald Marsh Antique Clocks, Winchester. There are three people associated with Parkinson & Frodsham that are known to have used the 'eleve' signature. The first is William Edward Frodsham who was the second eldest son of William James, born in 1814. He entered into his apprenticeship with his father in 1823, but tragically drowned in 1825, at the age of 20. Despite this, two marine chronometers are known to exist by him, numbered 1 and 2, and both signed on the dial Eléve of Parkinson & Frodsham. No. 2 accompanied Charles Darwin aboard H.M.S Beagle, and was sold in these rooms in 2014.The second person to use the 'eleve' name was Thomas Cotterell. Thomas Cotterell (also spelled Cottrell) was based at 163 Oxford street as Cotterell & Co. throughout the 1820's-1830's. Cotterell is known to have signed some marine chronometers as Elevé de Parkinson & Frodsham, despite not being listed as an official apprentice. One chronometer is known to be signed as Cotterell and Co., London and Parkinson & Frodsham, meaning it is possible that Cotterell made movements for Parkinson & Frodsham, rather then having been apprenticed to the firm. Further evidence of his association with Parkinson & Frodsham is that several chronometers were entered in the Greenwich trials by T. Cotterell, yet Parkinson & Frodsham literature took credit for the favourable results received. A chronometer made by Cotterell, No. 368, was bought for 80 guineas in 1829 by the government, to be used on the HMS Rainbow 1823, a 28-gun warship. He had several correspondences between 1822-1835 with Greenwich observatory, regarding the Trials and various parties interested in buying his chronometers. Beyond this, very little is known about his life, including when he stopped trading. The third person to consider is Henry Herbert Frodsham, William Edward Frodsham's nephew. Henry Herbert Frodsham was born in 1850 to Henry Frodsham, a Liverpool watch and chronometer maker and brother of the above-mentioned William Edward Frodsham. Henry Herbert served his seven-year apprenticeship with Thomas Robert Russell, completing it in 1871. After his apprenticeship, he was made a manager of Thomas Robert Russell and sent to manage their branch locations in Chile, then Germany, and finally London, where he seems to have established his own shop at 33 Picidilly, staying there between 1881-1884. A deck watch is known by him from this date, and it is signed on the dial Henry Frodsham élève of Parkinson & Frodsham, Change Alley, London. By 1886 Henry Herbert had moved to Bedford, again establishing himself as a watchmaker. In 1897, he went in to business with his wife Catherine, who was an optician, and formed H & C Frodsham, specialising in optics, whilst still offering watch repairs. Henry Herbert Frodsham died in 1915, but H & C Frodsham continued as an opticians under his daughter, Dorothy Frodsham, until her retirement in 1961.It seems likely that this particular chronometer was made by Thomas Cotterell. Cotterell outlived William Edward Frodsham and spent longer working in London then Henry Herbert Frodsham. Cotterell also used a grammatically correct French signature, eleve de, rather then William Edward and Henry Herbert, both of whom used eleve of. Why Cotterell didn't include his name, as he had done on previous examples remains unknown. The trade sticker in the chronometer box is from Liverpool nautical instrument and chronometer maker Alexander Cairns. He is recorded as working at 12-13 Waterloo Road between 1859-1872, having previously worked at 32 Waterloo Road, just up from Waterloo Dock. There is no record of interaction between Cairns and Parkinson & Frodsham. However, the latter had two branches in Liverpool, four wards east, also just up from the docks. It is possible that this chronometer may have been sent from the London workshop to be sold in Liverpool, though this cannot be confirmed.University of Cambridge (2015) Cambridge Digital Library: Papers of John Pond.
