LUGO, EMIL LUGO, EMIL 1840 Stockach - 1902 München Titel: Schloss Ostenwalde. Blick in den Park. Technik: Öl auf Leinwand. Maße: 54,5 x 73,5cm. Bezeichnung: Monogrammiert und datiert rechts: Bezeichnung: 1887 E.L. (lig.). Rahmen/Sockel: Rahmen. Provenienz: Privatbesitz, Deutschland. Ausstellung: Der Landschaftsmaler Emil Lugo 1840-1902. Ausstellung der Kunststiftung Hohenkarpfen und der Stadt Stockach, 2002. Im Katalog unter der Nr. 36 mit Abb. S. 59. Emil Lugo Deutschland Karlsruher Malerschule 2.H. 19.Jh. Gemälde Bauwerk Malerei Deutschland LUGO, EMIL LUGO, EMIL 1840 Stockach - 1902 Munich Title: Castle Ostenwalde. View in the park. Technique: Oil on canvas. Measurement: 54,5 x 73,5cm. Notation: Monogrammed and dated right: 1887 E.L. (lig.). Frame/Pedestal: Framed. Provenance: Private ownership, Germany. Exhibitions: Der Landschaftsmaler Emil Lugo 1840-1902. Ausstellung der Kunststiftung Hohenkarpfen und der Stadt Stockach, 2002. In cat. under the no. 36 with ill. p. 59. The Rittergur Ostenwalde in Melle near Osnabrück was for Emil Lugo a place of quiet creativity and intellectual exchange with his patron and poet friend Baron Gisbert von Vincke. Lugo, who dealt with the most diverse models in the course of his artistic life, lived in Freiburg im Breisgau from 1875 onwards, where he met Vincke. During the following years he stayed several times at his family home in Westphalia; numerous drawings and paintings document this. He especially made use of the nature in the large area of the surrounding park for numerous studies, which he could also translate into oil paintings. From the present view of the gardener's house, the stables and the two large chestnut trees there is a washed pencil drawing in the copper engraving room of the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe (Inv. No VIII 1887-46). Emil Lugo, beside Hans Thoma the second major pupil of Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, created many landscapes in the course of his artistic life, which are drawn true to nature, but always with a spiritual background, which goes beyond pure realism. In contrast to the Impressionist landscape painting that was emerging at the time, there is always a literary and idealistic tendency in his work. At the same time he cannot be clearly assigned to any one school, partly due to his different places of residence and moves; rather, he takes up different tendencies and forms his own, "quiet" style in the 19th century. The present work, created during his second period in Freiburg after his travels to Italy and before moving to Chiemgau, stands alongside a large number of motifs from the Black Forest. Lugo often spent the summer months away from the urban environment and drew consciously and often after nature. However, he saw these studies en plen air mainly as a collection of material for the later large studio works. This working principle can be seen very clearly in the park landscape from Ostenwalde. “A very rare George III feather decorated sewing box, and a companion box the first of elongated octagonal form, the sides in silk decorated with leaf, scroll panels comprised of feathers within gilt paper borders, the lid with border panels of feathers to a moulded edge panel of iridescent exotic feathers. The interior with original gold trellis pink paper, the lower section lidded and compartmentalised and fitted with a needle book, with a few accessories including a set of four mother of pearl top reels, on gilt metal patterned ball feet, 20.5 x 16.9cms. , the companion box of canted form, 13cms. (2) † The unusual decoration in cut and pressed paper combined with feathers is echoed in the work of Jane and Mary Parminter who built A la Ronde near Exmouth in the 1790’s. Elements of the house were decorated with friezes and other decorative features incorporating feathers laboriously stuck down with isinglass in complex patterns. It is however the shell gallery and staircase which is the supreme achievement , here shells, feathers and cut paper were supplemented by lichen, glass, mica , pottery , stones and paint to form a Gothic fantasy of grottoes, panels of feathers and shells many arranged in natural forms or complex geometric designs. “ From a Connoisseur’s Collection

Clad in the same livery as its famous predecessor and sporting the same start number, the Mini Cooper powered confidently into the arduous six-day event cheered on by excited French supporters who took Number 37, 'Le Mini Anglaise', to their hearts. After thirty years, the Cooper's legendary ability still shone against the might of formidable opposition and Paddy and Number 37 were applauded wherever they went. The Mini Cooper 'Monte Carlo' was a limited-edition of 200 cars built in early 1994 to celebrate Paddy's return to Monaco and was based upon the Mini Cooper 1.3i. The 'Monte Carlo ' was given special exterior colours (Flame Red and Black only), special badges, a special interior with Monte Carlo specific details, four auxiliary lamps at the front and 12-inch Minilite-style alloy wheels. Under the bonnet was the standard, single-point fuel-injected 1275cc, 63bhp A-Series engine linked to the normal four-speed gearbox. Four auxiliary lamps dominated the front of the car, while the body-coloured wheel-arch extensions deceived the eye and made the car look that little bit wider than it was. Specially finished alloy wheels wearing Dunlop 165x12" tyres added to the sporty look, whilst a set of special Monte Carlo decals, including a John Cooper signature, completed the effect.Whilst the exterior of the car was influenced by the Monte Carlo rally cars, the interior was a world apart from the spartan cockpit of its competition brethren. The red and white colouring found on the outside of the car was carried through to the inside with the seats boasting red side rolls with patterned white facings. On the walnut dashboard, a set of Ivory-white dials added a sporty twist, and an extra switch on the dashboard controlled the two fog lamps. Other tweaks include a red leather-covered gear knob and steering wheel and a set of red seat belts.Dating from mid-1994 and first registered on 10/01/1995, this smart, right-hand drive Mini Cooper 'Monte Carlo Edition' has recently been finished in a fresh coat of Flame Red with an Old English White roof. The indicated mileage is 44,847 supported by the original service book, older MOTs and a good history file. The current MOT is valid until Saturday 13 February 2021.Charity Fundraiser details:Sporting Bears is a key partner of The NEC Classic Motor Show where they usually operate 'Dream Rides' - giving attendees the opportunity to experience being a passenger in an amazing car. Accomplished beneath General William Vandever autograph endorsement signed, House of Representatives, 23 February 1863. LINCOLN GRANTS IOWA REPRESENTATIVE WILLIAM VANDEVER A LEAVE OF ABSENCE: "Let this leave of ab-sence be extended twenty additional days. A. Lincoln February 24, 1863."Lieutenant Colonel and Assistant Adjutant General John Aaron Rawlins (1831-1869) signs an order granting Brigadier General William Vandever (1817-1893) a 20-day leave of absence on 10 February. Writing from Washington D. C. nearly two weeks later on the verso, Vandever submits a request to Secretary of War Stanton: "I respectfully ask an extension of the within leave for twenty days - I find it important to remain a short time in this city as my official term as a member of the House is about to expire."Although Vandever's official congressional biography notes that he served in Congress until 24 September 1861 (early in his second term), he never officially resigned his seat when he mustered into the U. S. Army. In May 1862, George H. Browne, Congressman from Rhode Island, challenged the constitutionality of Vandever holding a military commission and commanding a regiment while remaining a member of Congress. Consideration by the House was deferred until December 1862. On March 4, 1863, the day after Vandever's second House term ended, the Senate approved his appointment as a Brigadier General. ROOSEVELT, Theodore (1858-1919). Draft typescript signed as President ( "Theodore Roosevelt"), with an 8-word emendation in Roosevelt 's hand, to Lawrence F. Abbott. Washington, D. C., 16 February 1909. 1 ½ pages, 4to, on White House stationery. "THERE IS NO REASON YOU SHOULD NOT PUBLISH THE ARTICLE"During his final weeks in office, Roosevelt writes Lawrence F. Abbott of The Outlook: "There is no reason at all that you should not publish Bunau-Varilla 's article [in The Outlook] as long as you have said you would. It is simply that I ought not to be in a controversy with him. It would be like Balfour having a joint debate with Poultney Bigelow." Philippe Bunau-Varilla (1859-1940) greatly influenced the selection of the the construction site for the Panama Canal; he worked closely with Roosevelt in the orchestration of the Panamanian Revolution. For condition inquiries please contact Gretchen Hause at gretchenhause@hindmanauctions.com

A 1961 Daimler Majestic Registration number 365 HFJ Chassis number 99732 Engine number 92445 V5C MOT expires September 2021 (although exempt) Black over grey with a leather interior Walnut dash and door cappings With some old MOT's and a few bills Owners handbook From the owner: My Daimler Majestic 3.8 Saloon Model DF318 3794cc. First registered 01/09/1961 Black and grey. Straight six cylinder. Dunlop disc brakes and Borg-Warner automatic transmission. Possibly also power assisted steering as it?s very light. Original registration number 781 CXU Changed to 365 HFJ in about 1964. Vehicle identification number: 99732. Engine number: 92445 Historic Vehicle The car?s history My father bought it second hand in 1964 or 1965 (and, rather eccentrically, swapped the original registration number with that of his Morris 1000 Traveller). The car, first delivered on 1st September 1961, had originally been supplied by Hughes of Beaconsfield to a London businessman living in the town, who had bought it at his wife?s request. But she had then died so he sold the car with only 6,000 miles on the clock. Shortly after my father bought it he had to put in a new speedometer so the present reading of 60,558 miles is about 6,000 miles too low. I remember him driving me back to boarding school along the old A4 when I was about 17, and the car running more and more slowly until it finally stopped near Silbury Hill. Father had forgotten to top up the oil, but no important damage appeared to have been done. When I learned to drive in the late 1960s, he would very occasionally let me use it and I remember trying to impress various girlfriends with varying degrees of success. I went to my wedding in it, Labrador in the back, and it was in attendance at my parents? funerals and our children?s christenings. Between November 1980 and April 1981 I left the car with Fred Seaward of Buckland Newton Garage, Buckland Newton, Dorset. Fred thoroughly checked and repaired or renewed a number of mechanical and electrical parts, repaired or rebuilt some bodywork and doors, and welded front splash panels, sill plates, etc. He re-sprayed the car with four litres of black and five litres of silver paint. In July 1995, on the 50th anniversary of Labour?s 1945 election victory, Downing Street gave me permission to drive to Chequers, the prime minister?s country residence, and have an evening picnic in the grounds. Our party consisted of my wife?s mother ? Clement Attlee?s daughter ? my wife (Clem?s granddaughter) our two young sons and me. We drove in the Daimler. I was asked to send our and the car?s details ahead, but for Granny the trip was a surprise. When we arrived at security at the Chequers entrance gates, one of the police officers asked, ?Can you tell me why in 1964 your father changed this car?s registration number?? I couldn?t, but Chequers? security background- checking was impressive. As we were finishing our picnic, a minion appeared and asked if, we?d like to go up to the house for a drink with Mrs Major (John Major?s wife Norma). We did .She was charming, and delighted to show our two boys, among other things, the secret door in the library and Cromwell?s death mask. In July 2004 I had a (gentle) collision with a Land Rover in a lane near where we live. The damage required the removal and replacement (with second-hand parts) of the radiator grill surround and flutes, front bumper, o/s front over-rider and o/s headlamp and bowl and rim and fixings. The necessary work was completed and second-hand parts supplied by John Nash of the Daimler Enthusiasts Club, Christchurch, Dorset. (T: 01202 481251). John Nash added ?I see you didn't mention all the major welding repairs I did to front body supports on front chassis outriggers, to the inner sills & door pillars etc and rear chassis outrigger to boot floor. I remember that job as it was very bad that the doors had dropped so much that they would not shut properly. Maybe we should not mention that but most of these suffer the same it but at least its all been done.? I don?t remember all this but I have Fred Seaward?s and John Nash?s bills. 1929 Shaw Special, 10.5 hp. Registration number AW 6769. Frame number 3534083 (ABC). Engine number M32171 (Austin). In my time as an auctioneer one occasionally comes something that you are at a loss of how to catalogue, this wonderful creation is one of those times, so I think the best way is to tell a story with a little bit of poetic license. In 1929, engineer, John Shaw of Scarcroft in Leeds, began designing and building his own motorcycle using an ABC motor cycle frame and an Austin Seven motor car engine. One presumes that he either had an old ABC with a broken engine or an Austin with a damaged chassis/body. The ABC was produced by the Sopwith Aircraft Company and designed by Granville Bradshaw, who had developed a 398cc overhead valve flat twin engine during the Great War and placed it in a duplex loop frame with sprung front and rear forks. It was one of the most advanced designs of its time but did not sell well and the company folded in the mid 1920?s. The Austin, being of small size, fitted quite well within the frame and he then designed the shaft drive to power it. There is a photograph on file of the shaft drive being on the right-hand side of the machine, maybe a mark one version, as he soon decided on across the frame with flexible couplings to the rear wheel via a cardan shaft. By late 1929/early 1930 he had decided on the finished article which used the c.1927 Austin Seven and gearbox, mounted at an angle, with twin radiators, (similar to a Scott). With three forward gears and reverse, it used either a hand or lever operated clutch, coupled brakes by hand or foot, electric or foot start, riding on AJS 26? wheels, the rear being detachable. During 1930 and 1931 Shaw then undertook some 8,000 miles of touring on all kinds of roads and tracks in Britain including Park Rash (Kettlewell), Keigthley Gate (Ilkley) and Middle Tongue (Cumbria) which provided information on the performance of the motor bike. By 1931 he was satisfied that his machine was running perfectly and he successfully patented the coupling mechanism with the shaft drive (patent number 393,947, submitted on the 10th December 1931 and granted on the 12th June 1933). In the mid 1930?s he toured the continent with his wife as pillion rider for two or three weeks at a time on several occasions. Interestingly George Bough introduced the Brough Superior Austin Four for the 1931 Olympia Motorcycle Show. It was listed in the 1932 Brough Superior catalogue as the 'Straight Four' but it was commonly known as the Brough Superior Austin Four, or BS4, or '3-wheeled Brough'. The machine is powered by a modified Austin 7 engine and gearbox unit, from which a driveshaft emerges on the centre-line of the motor. Rather than design a new gearbox, George Brough kept the central driveshaft, and use a pair of close-couple rear wheels driven by a central final drive box. This 3-wheeled design was legally considered a motorcycle as the wheel centres were within 24". One wonders if Brough had seen Shaw?s machine? During 1931 The Motor Cycle magazine had four articles on the Shaw Special, August 31st under the title ?The Nameless Wonder?, September 3rd, December 10th when Shaw, under the pseudonym Austin Primus, describes its particulars and the 24th December under ?An Enthusiast?s Austin-engined Machine?. At some point the engine was bored out by 40 thousanths, possibly to gain more power. John Shaw was an engineer of some repute having also designed and built an aluminium bodied car with the A55 engine and latterly even designed his own house in Scarcroft. He was recruited as works manager to the purpose built factory at Crewe to produce the Merlin aero-engines which powered the Spitfire and Avro planes during WW2. Shaw passed away in 1967 and his wife loaned the machine to the Nostell Priory Museum, where it remained until Sotheby?s sold the Harry Fenby collection that had made up the bulk of the museum in 1980. It was returned to Mrs Shaw who gave it to her nephew in law, our vendor. Unfortunately, the museum had lost its original number plates and substituted others and therefore our vendor applied to the Local Vehicle Licensing Office in Hull in 1983 for a V5 with the correct registration mark and this was provided. As they could not locate a frame number, they issued it a new one and asked for it to be stamped, and this was to be undertaken during restoration. However during the stripping the original number appeared on the headstock when the frame was restored. Unused for many years, he decided in 2010 to have it restored by Chris Woodcock of Norton. The engine was stripped and rebuilt, (when the rebore was discovered) , gearbox and clutch overhauled, a replacement Zenith carburettor was fitted as the original Amal had metal fatigue (included with the sale), frame and metalware was powder coated, radiators overhauled, nickel plated and rechromed where required, speedo, magneto and dynamo reconditioned and the seat recovered (original included). Since the restoration it has been regularly started up but not ridden and he has now decided to part with this wonderful creation, when viewed the engine fired on the first pull of the starter and sounded very quiet and smooth. Sold with the V5C, copy V5, copy of the patent, the original magazine articles, various period photographs, a CD of the restoration work and other paperwork. It is the subject of a magazine article by Classic Bike.

Attached to the end of each chain is a useful item of household equipment. In the 19th century the chatelaine was also used by women as a key-chain and as an indication of their status. The woman with the keys was "the woman of the household", having absolute control over who had access to any locked item in the house, from the pantry to the jewellery boxes. Younger women and daughters in the house often wanted the appearance of this responsibility, and would often wear decorative chatelaines with a variety of small objects in the place of keys, especially bright and glittering objects that could be used to start a conversation, as with this example.

A fine Victorian parcel-gilt satinwood centre table, attributed to Holland & Sons, circa 1860, with figured circular tilt-top on a baluster stem and tripod base carved with foliage, 74cm high, 142cm diameter Provenance: The Dukes of Leeds, Hornby Castle, YorkshirePossibly acquired by Sir George Godolphin Osborne, 8th Duke of Leeds (1802-72), for the principal family seat, Hornby Castle, North YorkshireThis table can be ascribed to Holland & Sons, one of the largest and most prestigious cabinet-making firms in the 19th century, based on a number of stylistic attributes; the superb choice of timbers, the figuring of the satinwood tilt-top, the fine foliate giltwood carving and the distinctive giltwood borders. Holland & Sons were known for their diversity of style - in the mid-1860s, supplying furniture in the fashionable 'Louis XVI-style', such as the table offered here, but also making 'Elizabethan' furniture, neo-Gothic and furniture inspired by Robert Adam, Sheraton and Chippendale (S. Jervis, 'Holland & Sons, and the furnishing of the Athenaeum', Furniture History, 1970, p. 46). First established in 1815 as Taprell & Holland at 25 Great Pulteney Street, London, the firm was renamed Holland & Sons in 1843 when William Holland, a founding member, and probably related to George IV's architect-designer, Henry Holland, took over the firm. In the 1850s, William was replaced by his son, James Holland, and the firm moved to 19 Marylebone Street and Ranelagh Works, Lower Belgrave Street, and from 1852, 23 Mount Street. They exhibited at all the major international exhibitions, including London 1851, Paris 1855, London 1862 and Paris 1867; for example, at the 1862 London International Exhibition, they exhibited a fine marquetry and gilt-bronze centre table veneered with tulipwood, kingwood, New Zealand spicewood, boxwood and purple heart to a design by a 'Mr. Rosenberg' that included engravings by Old Masters, all centred by a spider's web in silver and ivory (J. Meyer, Great Exhibitions: London, Paris, New York, Philadelphia 1851-1900, Woodbridge, 2006, p. 122). The firm worked on the interiors of several of the London gentlemen's clubs, the Army & Navy, the Athenaeum, the Carlton and the Reform. They undertook Royal commissions at Buckingham Palace, Osborne House and Windsor Castle, and were a major contractor for H.M. Works until circa 1852, including the Palace of Westminster. Other significant contracts were for the Great Western Railway and the Royal Academy of Arts. The firm employed many well-known, independent designers, Sir Charles Barry, Gottfried Semper and J.K. Collins. The Holland & Sons ledgers comprising 235 volumes dating from 1824 to 1942 and covering most of their major commissions are held in the Archive of Art & Design at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.Hornby CastleThis table was possibly acquired by Sir George Godolphin Osborne, 8th Duke of Leeds (1802-72), for the principal family seat, Hornby Castle, North Yorkshire. Built in the 15th century as a fortified house, it was significantly remodeled by the architect John Carr of York, and probably James 'Athenian' Stuart, in the 1760s, for Robert Darcy, 4th Earl of Holdernesse. The mansion was altered to Classical proportions and regular, enlarged sash windows were installed combined with gothic architectural detailing. When the 4th Earl's only daughter, Amelia Darcy, married Francis Godolphin Osborne, Marquess of Carmarthan, and later 5th Duke of Leeds, a new family arrived at Hornby by inheritance, and the house became a ducal seat. Due to a series of important family relationships, Hornby Castle became a repository for a magnificent collection of Restoration furniture that embodied their glorious political past. The halcyon days of Hornby Castle were undoubtedly in this period but also in the early to mid-19th century when the 7th Duke of Leeds commissioned A.W.N. Pugin to prepare a set of drawings for the remodeling of Hornby Castle. Although never executed, Pugin submitted detailed plans on a grand scale for two floor of the castle courtyard, and perspective sketches for the rest.Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Y A Fine Reformed Gothic walnut and specimen parquetry inlaid trumpet work table, circa 1880, attributed to being designed by Charles Bevan for Gillows, with internal removable tray above the trumpet paper lined 'bag', the specimen marquetry including oak, walnut, tulipwood, and maple, 71.5cm high, 37cm wide, 37cm deepCharles Bevan was born in the late 1820's and started gaining recognition for his work as a furniture designer and manufacturer in around 1865.Three London addresses are recorded from which he operated, firstly at 66 Margaret Street between 1865-6. Here he advertised a 'New Registered Reclining chair' made by Marsh and Jones of Leeds, whose London show rooms were near his own premises. In that year with the help of Marsh and Jones he supplied the Yorkshire mill owner Sir Titus Salt with a large group of furniture including a bedroom suit, and in 1867 with the case of an Erard grand piano. These can all now been seen at Temple Newsam House inLeeds. In 1866 he moved to 46 Bemers Street, during which time, his fortunes improved, working with the Manchester firm of James Lamb whose work was shown in the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1867. The following year he went into collaboration with one of the largest and most notable of 19th century furniture manufacturers, Gillows of Lancaster and London. Finally, in 1872 his works were exhibited at the International Exhibition in London with Gillows. They, in partnership, produced a pair of ebonised cabinets, decorated with Doulton stoneware plagues which now form part of the V&A collection in London. His final move was in 1872 and coincided with a partnership with his son forming C.Bevan and Son and a move to 100 High Holborn where the firm remained for the following ten years.Stylistically his furniture tends to be very heavily ornamented and in the Gothic taste, elaborately decorated with geometric ornamental inlays, described at the time as in the 'medieval taste', something clearly evident in our work box.Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches, abrasions consistent with age and use, some scuffs and knocks around the base,The internal tray probably originally with lids, these are all lacking, the pin cushion elements with rips,Some staining/deposit to the interior velvet of the lid - this may benefit from a light cleanThe top with fading and is a lighter colour than the rest, the base retaining good colour, Some splitting and cracking near the hinges of the top, The velvet interior to the lid worn and with losses and a stain to one lower side Please refer to additional images for visual reference to conditionCondition Report Disclaimer
