George Morrison (Grand Portage Anishinaabe, 1919-2000). Color lithograph on Japan paper titled "Surrealist Landscape," 1990-1996. Printed and published by Akasha Studio, Minneapolis. Pencil signed and dated along the lower right; titled along the lower left; numbered CTP 15/22 along the lower center.Lot Essay:Regarded as the founding figure of Native American modernism and among the top American abstract expressionist painters is George Morrison. Also highly regarded as a master collage artist, he assembled large collages of found driftwood and woodcut in framed, puzzle-like forms. In the 1940s, he was formally trained at the Minneapolis College of Art and in the 1950s at the Art Students League in New York before receiving a Fulbright to study in France. Taking his place as part of the modern art movement in New York in the 1950s after World War II, he was friends with Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, regularly exhibiting with de Kooning, Philip Guston, Hans Hofmann, and Franz Kline. Morrison helped bring the New York Modern Art movement to Minnesota, where he was based and worked with pure form via Abstract Expressionism. Later in his career, in the mid-1970s, Morrison shifted to a new theme and started to really explore his heritage when he and his family built a home with an art studio on the Grand Portage Indian Reservation on Lake Superior, naming it Red Rock.Rather than portraying an overt depiction of identity, Morrison was in the process of exploring his identity so he looked to nature, stating “in this search for my own identity, I seek the power of the rock, the magic of the water, the religion of the tree, the color of the wind and the enigma of the horizon.†Translating nature into paintings was Morrison’s way to navigate learning and absorption, and in turn produce self-expression. His token theme was the horizon, taking on dynamic form as colors or shapes in the eternal motion of nature. His inspiration was provided by Lake Superior, observing and documenting the temporary sight of the revered sky meeting landscape that he beheld in the moment. His artworks are spotted today in the collections of the Heard Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Whitney Museum of American Art, US National Gallery of Art, Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the Walker Art Center. In 1997 he was honored in a ceremony at the White House when his work was included in the Twentieth Century American Sculpture at The White House: Honoring Native Americans exhibition. Late 18th CenturyLooking slightly down to her right, wearing swirling classical robes, on square shaped fixed plinth.Height 51inches (129.5 cm)Clifton Little Venice, Garden Statuary, Architectural and Decorative Furnishings, Christie's London, June 9, 1994, lot 93. A Vestal goddess of the hearth, modeled by the sculptor John Bacon R.A. (D.1799) who was granted a Royal Appointment to the King George III in 1769, is first noted in the 1770's when it was exhibited by Eleanor Coade at the Society of Artists Exhition and continued to be manufactured at the Lambeth Works untill the 1820s. The model was attributed to Bacon in the catalogue of Coade's Gallery, 1799 (see A. Kelly, Mrs Coade stone. worcs. 1990, p.130 fig. 4). The Vestal featured in a wall-niche at Beaumont Lodge, Windsor in the early 1790s, and was also supplied to Earl Fitzwilliam at Wentworth House, Yorkshire, in 1814.Much mystery surrounds the life of Eleanor Coade and her decision to venture into the business of artificial stone manufacturing. Her famous Coade Factory was based in Lambeth, London, which is now part of the area occupied by the Southbank Centre. Throughout its history spanning from 1769-1840, the factory produced a vast array of products such as architectural and garden ornaments, decorative details, statues and monuments. ‘Coade stone’ as it is known was of exceptional quality, and was the only kind of artificial stone at the time to be resilient to frost and other forms of harsh outdoor exposure. The high standards of design and quality upheld by Coade were noticed by London’s most highly regarded architects including Robert Adam, James Wyatt, John Nash and Sir John Soane, each of whom commissioned works.Coade’s most prestigious work was at Buckingham Palace which was rebuilt by Nash in 1825.The artificial stone produced by the Coade Factory was unique in that it was a ceramic material containing a large proportion of ground pre-fired stoneware with a glass stabilizer added to it, which was rolled into sheets and pressed into reusable molds. Because most works were cast in sections before firing, they could easily be altered to suit the client’s individual wishes. The base with damage and cracks and chips to rim, overall with minor scratches and dents commensurate with age, further on with dust allover which could benefit from cleaning.

Free Front Signed by M F Berkeley 1788-1867 and Capt S J B Pechell Lord of the Admiralty. Free Front dated 24 March 1834 Personally Signed by Maurice Frederick Fitzhardinge Berkeley 1788 - 1867 as a Royal Navy officer. As a junior officer he commanded gunboats on the Tagus, reinforcing the Lines of Torres Vedras, in Autumn 1810 during the Peninsular War and, as a captain, he served on the coast of Syria taking part in the capture of Acre in November 1840 during the Oriental Crisis. He also served as Whig Member of Parliament for Gloucester and became First Naval Lord in the Aberdeen Ministry in June 1854 and in that role focussed on manning the fleet and in carrying out reforms and improvements in the food, clothing, and pay of seamen. Also Signed by Capt S John Brooke Pechell also Lord of the Admiralty. Letter Rear-Admiral Sir Samuel John Brooke Pechell, 3rd Baronet CB, KCH, FRS (1 September 1785 - 3 November 1849) was a prominent British Royal Navy officer of the early nineteenth century. Although he served in several celebrated naval actions of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars his most important achievements were made while serving as a Lord of the Admiralty, pioneering the science and instruction of rapid and accurate gunnery in the Royal Navy through training facilities and manuals. In addition to his work at the Admiralty, Pechell served in the House of Commons for two constituencies and was on good terms with King William IV, who supported his efforts to improve standards of gunnery and returned him to the Admiralty in 1839 after a five-year absence caused by his support for the Whig government. In 1826 he inherited the Pechell Baronetcy from his father, but died childless and the title passed to his brother George. Pechell was born in Ireland in 1785, the son of Sir Thomas Brooke Pechell and his wife Charlotte. Pechell was well connected in military circles: his father was a senior army officer, as were both his grandfathers, Sir Paul Pechell and Sir John Clavering. His uncle was John Borlase Warren, later to become a senior Royal Navy officer. His younger brother, George Pechell would also become a prominent naval officer. Aged 11, Pechell joined the Royal Navy under the guidance of his uncle, joining HMS Pomone in 1796 during the French Revolutionary Wars. The following year he moved to HMS Phoebe, commanded by Captain Robert Barlow and there remained for the next four years. Under Barlow, Pechell was involved in two significant frigate actions, when Phoebe captured the French frigate Néréide at the action of 21 December 1797 and then the Africaine at the action of 19 February 1801. For his actions in these engagements, Pechell was highly praised and promoted, following Barlow into HMS Triumph in the aftermath of the Africaine action and then moving to HMS Active during the Peace of Amiens in 1803 as a lieutenant. In January 1806, Pechell joined his uncle's flagship HMS Foudroyant and was present at the defeat of the French squadron under Admiral Charles Linois at the action of 13 March 1806. In April 1807, Pechell was given his first independent command, in charge of the brig HMS Ferret operating from Jamaica. In June 1808, he was promoted to post captain and took command of the frigate HMS Cleopatra, in which he joined the squadron being assembled at Barbados for operations against the French islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe. It was while blockading the latter that he served in his most celebrated battle, the action of 22 January 1809. The French frigate Topaze had been forced to take shelter under a gun battery off Pointe-Noire, Guadeloupe, but had been spotted by Pechell's blockade force. Despite fire from the shore, Pechell attacked immediately and brought Cleopatra close inshore to engage Topaze from close range. Pechell's dispositions were so good that Topaze was soon unable to respond, and the arrival of two other Royal Navy ships allowed him to bring his prize out of the bay successfully. The following month, Cleopatra performed a supporting role in the successful invasion of Martinique and later in the year the ship returned to European waters, Pechell briefly moving to HMS Guerriere before returning to Cleopatra in 1811, operating in the North Sea and off Gibraltar. In 1812, Pechell became captain of Warren's flagship HMS San Domingo, the flagship of the North America Station during the War of 1812. Pechell did not see any action and returned to Britain in 1814. The following year the war ended and Pechell entered semi-retirement, being made a Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1815 for his services during the Napoleonic Wars. Good condition. End of the Old Kingdom / Beginning of the First Intermediate Period, Dynasties VII-VIII, Ca. 2181 - 2160 BC.A beautiful limestone Egyptian false door consisting of a recessed central panel surrounded by two columns and one upper register of inscribed hieroglyphs. It belonged to Ima, a high official at the royal court, as shown in his titles: “King's acquaintance”, “King's nobleman of the house of the dignitaries” and “ Inspector of the spear(?)”. This title is a unicum, in fact it is not found in other known monuments. This false door has all the canonical parts: the decorated torus, the upper lintel, the outer door jambs, the lower lintel and the inner jambs. Between the inner jambs there is a narrow niche suggesting the entrance to a door with a rolled-up mat (drum)above it. In the space between the outer jambs there is a panel with a scene in sunk-relief : the deceased seated in front of the offering table. He is also depicted in sunk-relief on the outer jambs, standing up, looking inwards, with the emblems of his rank, the staff and the sceptre, in his hands. In the inner right jamb, a standing up woman is depicted in sunkrelief, looking inwards, with a lotus flower in her right hand. Above her figure a hieroglyphic text reports her titles and name: “King's acquaintance, priestess of Hathor, Pef”, she is probably Ima’s wife. For similar see: The Metropolitan Museum of Art Accession Number: 64.100 (model). London, 1995, p.84-5, fig. 57-8.  Exhibition: Sotheby's London, The Artist and the Country House, no.57 and 58. The present lot is a striking example of English country house portraiture, commissioned as a painterly record of a generation's contribution to the family seat. The tradition of estate painting arrived in England relatively late in comparison with the continent, where Renaissance rulers and aristocrats sought to document their palaces and homes. While oil paintings on canvas of a standalone property are unrecorded in England before 1600, the tradition was taken up with great enthusiasm and the art form reached its zenith in the eighteenth-century.Born in Suffolk in 1704, Thomas Bardwell was a painter with a varied oeuvre; he travelled across England and Scotland executing country house views, portraits and conversation pieces. He began his artistic career decorating house interiors and initially owned a paint supply business. Although he lacked formal training, in the 1720s he was employed by the successful country house painter Peter Tillemans (c. 1684-1734) to paint Livermere Hall in Bardwell's native East Anglia. Tillemans' influence on Bardwell is discernible from his earliest topographical pictures. Notably, his painting of Hedenham Hall (1735) adopts Tillemans' distinctive equine staffage, shown most prominently in his view of Chatsworth (1720s). Though charmingly naïve, this early work is also notable for its sensitive observation of detail and miniature-like quality.Previously attributed to James Shrigley, The Adlington views demonstrate how Bardwell's proficiency in country house painting evolved in his mature years. First and foremost, the works memorialise the architectural achievements of Charles Legh (1697-1781), including the south wing portico, detached stable block, domed Temple of Diana and garden follies. Although early continental estate pictures certainly display a keen interest in preserving specific details, decorative concerns often came at the expense of accuracy and views were compressed to create broad pictorial maps. By the turn of the 18th century, however, artists and patrons responded to the growing study of topography and sets of elevational views proliferated to provide a comprehensive record.Bardwell's interest in perspectival accuracy therefore made him a fitting choice for the commission. Published in 1756, his study The Practice of Painting and Perspective Made Easy offers the reader a guide to the principles of perspective using illustrations of buildings, gardens and avenues. His principles are brought to fruition in the present works, through geometric precision, carefully manipulated areas of light and shadow and the incisive rendering of architectural detail.Bardwell's views also act as a celebration of the English estate, with its bucolic scenery and rural pleasures. Following Charles Legh as he strolls around the grounds, the paintings provide a pictorial tour of the landscape. The parkland is characteristic of the mid eighteenth-century designs popularised by Lancelot 'Capability' Brown, with rolling pastures and clusters of trees. Horses graze, deer and rabbits frolic, and Charles Legh is accompanied by a crowd of his cherished dogs. Indeed, the lines between portraiture, landscape, sporting and country house painting blurred in English eighteenth-century conversation pieces and works began to speak to the symbiotic relationship between the home and family. Thomas Bardwell's portraits, for instance, often include the sitter's home in the background and his estate views show figures riding or promenading through the grounds.John Steegman wrote that 'a house may be called Castle, Abbey, Priory, Park, Hall, Court, Manor, or just a House...But they are all houses, which have been born-in, lived-in and died-in by the family, and which are centred the family's affections and pride'. Bardwell's pictures animate the country house by reflecting the delight and fulfilment of those who inhabit it. In one view, Charles Legh stands proudly before the imposing new facade. Another shows him looking across his sweeping vista and admiring Adlington Hall from a distance. In each picture, however, the figure moves unobtrusively across the landscape; there is an awareness of his transience. While one generation travels through, the home and park remain the constant focus, a testament to one family's enduring legacy. Condition Report: White picket fence, centrally located The paintings has been wax lined. There are multiple chip losses evident and a strong pattern of craquelure present. Lot 559

A COTSWOLD SCHOOL ARTS AND CRAFTS OAK WARDROBE BY ERNEST GIMSON. A large and impressive oak Cotswold School wardrobe by Ernest Gimson for W.R.S. Bathurst at Pinbury Park Gloucestershire. The wardrobe with a bow fronted door and gently curved sides, with horizontal and vertical chip carved decoration and exposed tenon joints. Supported on heavy sleigh type legs with block fronted feet. 182cms high, 92cms wide, 55cm deep. Sydney Barnsley first came across Pinbury Park in the early 1890's, the building and location captivated the young London based architects. The run down picturesque charm of the buildings in the heart of the idyllic Cotswolds was all that the young idealistic men could have dreamed of. In 1901 when Lord Bathurst was newly married he took the property back for his own use. He allowed Gimson and the Barnsley Brothers to used Daneway House as workshops and showrooms, premises that were big enough to allow Gimson to expand his furniture making business and take on staff. It is Danebury that this Wardrobe will have been made. The cupboard perfectly evokes the ideal of Arts and Crafts furniture that William Morris proposed in 1898: So I say our furniture should be good citizens furniture, solid and well made in workmanship ... Made on the proper principles of joinery: also I think that except for movable things like chairs, it should be made of timber rather than walking sticks. On the market for the first time with a direct line of descent through the family of one of the most important Cotswold School Patrons. In use on a daily basis as useful, practical and much loved cupboard this piece of furniture typifies all that we expect to see in the best Cotswold school furniture. This is a further piece from the collection from Pinbury which came to the market in 2009. *CR Some marks and scuff marks to the door in places, and also to the sides, missing it's original shelves from inside. Sides, the panels have opened up slightly in places over time leaving small gaps along the edges.

Description: A George III North Country mahogany and chequerbanded dressing chest possibly by Thomas Chippendale The rectangular top above a hinged slide with replaced baize, enclosing four drawers; above three long graduated drawers, with reeded quarter columns to the angles; on bracket feet, 102cm wide, 53cm deep, 79cm high. This dressing chest shares similar features to a group of documented chests believed to be by Thomas Chippendale which were supplied to Dumfries House, Ayrshire - catalogued for Christie’s proposed contents sale of Dumfries House, 12-13 July 2007, lots 106, 153, 213, 242, 251, 252. Although there are extant bills from Chippendale for furniture at Dumfries house, the above mentioned group of chests do not feature, but are tentatively attributed to him on the grounds of certain constructional features which can be seen on the above which includes the laminated blocking behind the bracket feet, packing nails and a red wash to the underside. The case for the Dumfries chests being by Chippendale is supported by the linen press at the house which shares these features with the aforementioned group of chests. A Chippendale bill dated 1763 is thought to refer to the linen press and thus establishes the link to Chippendale (see Christies proposed contents sale of Dumfries House, 12-13 July 2007, lot 236). The distinctive red wash as well as the use of packing nails appear on many of the pieces at Dumfries House supplied by Chippendale and notably not on those items with a documented link to other cabinet-makers. Although Chippendale's plainer mahogany furniture is traditionally more difficult to firmly attribute, commissions including the furniture supplied to Ninian Home for Paxton, Northumberland and to Lord Pembroke for Pembroke House, London have been key to identifying a workshop style, see C.Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, Bristol, 1978, p. 271-272. The same handle  and escutcheon pattern can be found on a small serpentine dressing chest by Chippendale at Erdigg Wrexham (NT 1147326.1) and a small dressing chest by Chippendale & Rannie for Nostell Priory, West Yorkshire (NT 960201).
