The Rare Great War Group of Medals Awarded to Vera, Countess of Rosslyn, Who Served in the Duchess of Sutherlands Ambulance in 1914, consisting 1914 Star “COUNTESS OF ROSSLYN”, British War and Victory Medals “COUNTESS OF ROSSLYN” and the Belgian Medaille De La Reine Elisabeth, unnamed as issued. The group mounted as worn on old ribbons. Vera Mary Bayley, known as ‘Tommy’ to her friends was born on 24th February 1887 and became the third wife of James Francis Harry St.Clair Erskine, the 5th Earl of Rosslyn in October 1908. When war broke out August 1914, she immediately volunteered her services and was enlisted by her sister-in-law, the Countess of Sutherland, to help with her Private Ambulance over in Belgium. Arriving in that theatre of war in October 1914 she joined the Ambulance at Dunkirk just in time to help deal with the casualties flooding into the town from the fighting at Yser. At this time, all the hospitals in the area were filled to overflowing and the Duchess of Sutherland was asked to form an auxiliary hospital which she did at Malo les Bains. The hospital with its 100 beds, it’s official name No.9 Red Cross Hospital, continued to be known as the Millicent Sutherland Ambulance. In February 1915 the Countess of Rosslyn returned home and in March 1916 she enrolled as a V.A.D. under the Joint Committee of the British Red Cross and Order of St John as a member of Berkshire 52 Detachment. Returning to France in the same month she served in the Millicent Sutherland Ambulance, which by now had relocated to Calais, through until April 1917 when she returned to the UK. On her return home she continued with part time nursing duties serving at the Struan House Auxiliary Hospital at Reading. She terminated her V.A.D. service in May 1918. The award of the Belgian Medaille De La Reine Elisabeth is confirmed in The Times newspaper 29th June 1918, in recognition of the kind help and valuable assistance personally given to Belgian refugees and soldiers. Post war her life was no less challenging as her marriage was coming to an end due to the 5th Earls continued addiction to gambling and women. During the 1920’s she started what was to become a long-lasting affair with Bruce Lockhart, the famous diplomat and spy. With the renewal of hostilities in September 1939 the Countess once again enrolled into the VAD enlisting as a Transport Driver in No.146 (Paddington District) Detachment. She was also active in raising the Friends Ambulance Unit that was embarked with the backing of the Red Cross for service in Finland during the conflict with the Soviet Union in the winter of 1939-40. By 1942 she was in charge of the Red Cross unit packing food parcels for prisoners of war, one of whom was her eldest son, James St.Clair Erskine. For her war work she was awarded a British Empire Medal (Civil Division) in the New Year’s honours 1st January 1946 ‘Vera Mary, Countess of ROSSLYN, Head Packer, Prisoners of War Food Packing Centre, Joint War Organisation of the British Red Cross Society and Order of St John.’ (B.E.M. not present). The Countess of Rosslyn died on her 88th birthday on 24th February 1975 and is buried in the famous Rosslyn chapel.

coloured silks, on an unbleached linen ground stretched onto a frame, signed V. BOWRING-HANBURY163cm x 48cmFootnote: Note: Victor Bowring-Hanbury was a ‘society sensation’ in 1930’s London and part of a royal and aristocratic social world. He was also considered rather eccentric and known for his aptitude for embroidery and his ability to make curtain hangings for his mother’s home. In 1925 he displayed his work in an exhibition that had favourable press attention. Unfortunately, he also lived beyond his means, as the fabulous contents of his house in Belgrave Square were not always paid for and he became bankrupt in 1938. The notorious socialite of the age Henry ‘Chips’ Channon in his diary entry for 13th April 1935 comments “I feel sorry for Victor Bowring-Hanbury, who’s old and bankrupt…I wonder – have I touches of his weak, absurd character too? His love of royalty, jewels and collections…the worst sides of my character”

Lot 457

A George IV burr and pollard oak work table attributed to Gillows1822-1825, the waved and everted scroll carved traytop above two opposing cedar and mahogany lined end drawers, over a beaded edge moulding incorporating a sliding work basket frame, on scrolled acanthus clasped lyre-end supports, terminating in four ringed foliate spray wrapped and S-scrolled downswept legs, with recessed brass castors, 71cm wide x 48cm deep x 73cm high, (27 1/2in wide x 18 1/2in deep x 28 1/2in high)Footnotes:The offered lot is virtually identical to a design for a 'traytop' work table, dated 23 August 1822, featuring in Gillows' Estimate Sketch Books, pl. 330, which was executed on behalf of Sir T.D. Hesketh. A further rosewood example is illustrated in S.E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster & London, 1730-1840, Vol.I, p.303, pl.332, and also appears on the front cover of Volume II, Ibid. As with the present model, this comparable has a bag slide but there is no trace of a bag ever having been fitted. And although it is documented that Sir T.D. Hesketh ordered a pink silk bag for his rosewood version in 1822, it seems that the vast majority of work table purchasers at that time preferred to make or acquire their own bag, perhaps explaining why so many are now lacking. It is also interesting to note the use of an indigenous timber with reference to the above.A work table of conforming design sold Sotheby's, London, 22 April 2004, lot 99 whilst a further related one in mahogany sold Christie's, 10 September 2009, Parisian Taste in London, lot 343.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. THE POXWELL MANOR REFECTORY TABLE: AN IMPORTANT OAK AND ELM "MONASTIC" REFECTORY TABLE, 16th century, with old repairs and replacements, with a single plank rectangular top on two openwork elm trestle supports in the form of flying buttresses with down-curved legs, 78.5cm high x 104cm wide x 365cm long. The top is 9cm deepThis monumental refectory table is a remarkable survival. It represents the earliest form of English dining table and may be compared to depictions of similar tables in late medieval manuscripts.Provenance: Until the 1970's the table was at the ancient Manor of Poxwell (Pokeswell) having descended in the Trenchard family. In the Middle Ages the manor was in the possession of Cerne Abbey and, by tradition, the table was moved from the Abbey at the time of the Dissolution under Henry VIII. A new house was built for the Poole merchant, Thomas Henning, in 1613 and it passed to Elizabeth Trenchard (née Henning) in 1699. The table was acquired by the family of the present owners when the descendants of the Trenchards sold the manor house in the 1970's.Poxwell Manor served as a place of rest for King George III on a number of occasions when he visited Weymouth during the latter part of the 18th century. Later the house was visited by Thomas Hardy and it is believed it was the inspiration for Oxwell Hall in "The Trumpet Major" published in 1880.

Registration No: 430 XVKChassis No: BN1- L224662MOT: April 2022Supplied to the USA in left hand drive configurationFinished in desirable 'Ice Metallic Blue'Fitted with uprated '3000' front disk brakesDonald Healey's eponymous company built a prototype two-seater sports car for display at the 1952 London Motor Show. It was based on Austin A90 Atlantic mechanicals and sported a notably sleek body designed by Gerry Coker and built by Tickford. It was dubbed the 'Healey Hundred' (a moniker chosen to reflect the car's ability to reach the magic 100mph), and, subject to a suitably encouraging response, Healey planned to build production versions in-house at his factory in Warwick. As things transpired, not only did the Ice Blue prototype more than impress the public, but also so excited Austin's Managing Director, Leonard Lord, that he struck a deal to build the car in volume at Longbridge. The newcomer was renamed the Austin-Healey 100/4. The rest, as they say, is history. The 100/4's chassis was a departure from the company's previous backbone designs and comprised a pair of three-inch square box-section side members running the length of the car, some 17 inches apart. These were braced by parallel and cruciform cross-members to which the steel floor pressings were attached. After the first 25 cars had been constructed at Healey's own premises in Warwick, the production of the mainstream bodyshells was turned over to Jensen. Once complete, the shells were transported to Longbridge, where the Healeys were assembled alongside the A90.The early examples (code named BN1s) were equipped with the same 90bhp 2660cc engines and manual four-speed transmissions as the A90 though, in an unusual move, Austin modified the gearbox so it operated as a three-speed unit with overdrive on the top two ratios. The car had 11-inch drum brakes all round. The front suspension was independent by coil springs while the rear featured a traditional live axle supported by semi-elliptic leaf springs. Damping was by Girling lever arm units all round and the steering was by cam and lever. A 1953 BN1 tested by Motor magazine returned a top speed of 106mph and achieved the 0-60mph dash in 11.2 seconds. A total of 10,688 BN1s are believed to have been produced between January 1953 and 1955 (the vast majority of which went overseas), when the model was superseded by the BN2.This BN1 on offer is an original left-hand drive USA export market example and was the subject of must previous restoration work, reportedly carried out to an exceptional standard more than twenty years ago. The 'Big' Healey is now finished in Ice Blue (having been colour changed from the original Spruce Green) and is trimmed in complementing Navy Blue leather - The vendor states "it was a frame-off restoration that showcased a full respray (including the floor pans). You would not be able to tell the car was a different colour from factory unless you had been told previously. The car has just had a brand new soft top fitted as well as brand new side screens in case you were to get caught out in a storm. It’s also just had 5 new radial tyres and tubes. It also sports a new upgraded single 12V battery instead of the standard 2x6v batteries. All electronics work as they should including the well know troublesome self-cancelling indicator and horn switch. The seats are leather, carpets look well as do the door cards. Possibly the biggest highlight of this car is its California history — it is basically rust free from body to frame."The vendor states that the odemeter reads 12,213 and assures us that '430 XVK' "drives as well as it looks". A rare opportunity for the ever-growing army of early 'Big' Healey collectors to purchase a vehicle equally suited to a relaxing drive in the UK countryside, but with subtle upgrades and a left-hand driving position to make it a serious contender for continental and long-distance rallying. It comes complete with photographic evidence of the restoration and extensive service and MOT history, plus a current certificate valid into April 2022.For more information, please contact:Adam Sykesadam.sykes@handh.co.uk07429600332
