AFTER PAUL DUBOIS (FRENCH, 1829-1905), A LARGE PLASTER SECTION OF THE EQUESTRIAN STATUE OF JOAN OF ARCLATE 19TH/FIRST HALF 20TH CENTURY, AFTER A CIRCA 1896 ORIGINALFragmentary, showing the body and legs of the horse, with ornamented tack, and a section of the rider, on an integral rectangular plinth inscribed P. DUBOIS to the maquette, 220cm high, 210cm long, 90cm wideProvenance: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New YorkUntil sold at Sotheby's New York, Historic Casts from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 28 February 2006, lot 108 (misidentified as a section from the Colleoni monument)This model, with its distinctive tack to the neck and flanks, is derived from French monumental sculptor Dubois' renowned equestrian statue of Joan of Arc, of which several bronze versions exist, including in Paris, Reims and Washington, USA. The present plaster is thought to have been cast after the version at Reims. This successful and widely disseminated model by the sculptor actually started life in plaster, when it was exhibited at the Salon in 1889 (entry no. 4320). It has been suggested that the statue offered here represents part of this initial version erected during that year.Other sketches and casts of the work in the medium of plaster are known, including in the collection of the Musee Camille Claudel (in Nogent-sur-Seine, the birthplace of Dubois), as well as the Ny Carlsberg Glyptothek in Copenhagen.Condition Report: As catalogued this lot is fragmentary. Both legs of the rider and one leg of the horse are detached but present. Various chips and losses throughout. Please refer to online images for visual reference to condition. Original vintage travel poster Autumn in Paris promoting Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. Notre-Dame de Paris, referred to simply as Notre-Dame, is a medieval Catholic cathedral on the Ile de la Cite in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. The cathedral was consecrated to the Virgin Mary and considered to be one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture. Its pioneering use of the rib vault and flying buttress, its enormous and colourful rose windows, as well as the naturalism and abundance of its sculptural decoration set it apart from the earlier Romanesque style. Major components that make Notre Dame stand out include its large historic organ and its immense church bells. Very good condition, light stain. Circle of William Hoare of Bath (British 1706-1799) Portrait of John Roberts (c.1711-1772), secretary to Henry Pelham, three-quarter-length Oil on canvas 126 x 100cm (49½ x 39¼ in.) Provenance: The Earls of Chichester, Stanmer Hall The present lot was purchased as a portrait of the Duke of Newcastle. However the physiognomy suggests this attribution may be incorrect. A double portrait by Hoare of Henry Pelham and his secretary John Roberts bears a striking resemblance of the former and the sitter here. This is corroborated by the paper entitled war accounts in the sitter's hands. Furthermore, records in The National Portrait Gallery catalogue for the group of paintings of the Pelham family by Hoare of Bath it mentions one portrait of a man in a red coat, as being one of a group by Hoare at Stanmer Hall in East Sussex. Stanmer Hall In 1713, Henry Pelham of Lewes bought Stanmer Estate for £7,500. He died in 1721 and his eldest son Henry then appointed French architect Nicolas Dubois to design a new house in the fashionable Palladian style at a cost of £14,000. With the old Manor demolished, work began on the new house in 1722, using sandstone quarried in the Weald. In 1725, the Estate was inherited by Henry's younger brother, Thomas Pelham - who had lived as a Merchant in Constantinople. Work on the house was finally completed in 1727. Thomas Pelham's son, of the same name, inherited the estate in 1737and would later be elected to the House of Commons for Rye in 1749, a seat he held until 1754. He served as a as a Lord of the Admiralty from 1761 to 1762 and as Comptroller of the Household from 1765 to 1774 being admitted to the Privy Council in 1765. In 1768 Thomas succeeded his cousin the Duke of Newcastle as second Baron Pelham of Stanmer as well as the Pelham baronetcy. Pelham also served as Surveyor-General of Customs of London from 1773 to 1805 and as the last Keeper of the Great Wardrobe from 1775 to 1782. In 1801 he was created Earl of Chichester, a title which would maintain Stanmer as its seat for the next 140 years. In 1942 Stanmer was requisitioned by the War Office for the Canadian Tank Regiment, to provide billets and live firing ranges. In 1947 it was sold as a result of the extensive damage caused by its requisitioning and death of the 8th Earl whilst on active service in 1944.

J. Matthews, 19th centuryOfficer of the 14th (King's) Light Dragoons, 1830ssigned 'J.Matthews' (lower right) oil on board 31.1 x 25.4cm (12 1/4 x 10in).Footnotes:Provenancewith The Parker Gallery, London.Private collection, UK.On the orders of King William IV the Light Dragoon regiments were ordered to wear scarlet coats instead of the blue that they had worn for the previous 40 years. The 14th was given the title King's Light Dragoons after a review in July 1830 and thereafter adopted dark blue collars and cuffs with gold lace. Dubois Drahonet shows the trouser stripe as being scarlet rather than gold - See J. Spencer-Smith, Portraits for a King - the British Military Paintings of A.J. Dubois-Drahonet (London: National Army Museum, 1990). The Light Dragoons reverted to blue uniforms in 1840.We would like to thank Dr Andrew Cormack for his assistance cataloguing this lot.
