FIVE DUNMORE POTTERY ANIMAL FIGURES PETER GARDNER, LATE 19TH CENTURY comprising a green glazed frog singing ‘The Woods O Dunmore’; a treacle glazed pig; a comical grotesque dog; a brown glazed pug; and a green/blue glazed monkey; all impressed DUNMORE (5) pig 16cm long, frog 12cm high, monkey 6.4cm high Provenance: The Maisels Collection of British Ceramics Note: The Dunmore Pottery was situated in Airth, north of Alloa, on the estate of the Earl of Dunmore.  Peter Gardner (born 1834) was the third generation of potters at Dunmore.  He ran the pottery from 1866.  Until this time it had produced utilitarian wares but Gardner radically altered the nature of the ware made at Dunmore, producing some outstanding art pottery and through connections introduced by the Earl and Countess of Dunmore, enjoyed aristocratic and royal patronage, and exhibited work at international exhibitions.  Wares produced included vases, urns, plaques, garden pottery and animal grotesques.  The green pottery frog included in this lot is one of Peter Gardner's comical and charming designs.  The frog sings lustily a romantic song entitled ‘The Woods of Dunmore’.  The song appeared in around 1835 and features in ‘Auld Scotch Songs and Ballads', arranged by Sinclair Dunn. Falkirk Council have an example of this model in thier collection.

Richard Waitt (Scottish, 1684-1733) Portrait of Charles Elphinstone, 9th Lord Elphinstone (1682-1757)oil on canvas73 x 60.5cmProvenance:Henry Ernest Leetham,By whom bequeathed to the Merchant Adventurers' Hall, York, in 1918Charles, 9th Lord Elphinstone was born, lived and likely buried at Elphistone Tower, now a ruin on the Dunmore estate near Falkirk and Stirling. He became a soldier and served as a Captain in Brigadier Grant’s regiment in the campaigns of Marlborough in Flanders, Belgium. He was severely wounded at Aigremont in Northern France in 1708. In 1711, the regiment was ordered home and he retired several years later in 1720. The present work, depicting Charles in armour, likely dates between 1708-1720.

Its Present Condition and Prospects, as a Highly Eligible Field for Emigration., 1st edition, two folding lithographed maps. Four tinted lithographed plates. original cloth, gilt. Ferguson 4562, Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1847 Lang emigrated to Australia in 1822 and was the first Presbyterian minister who regularly officiated in New South Wales. A leading promoter of emigration to Australia, he persuaded the British Government in 1836 to finance the passage of four thousand emigrants to the colony over the next three years.

A Dunmore Pottery (Scotland) vase, late 19th century, with twin high-shouldered angular handles, in a nicely mottled blue, green and brown glaze, impressed 'DUNMORE', 14cm highCondition:Condition is generally good. A couple of tiny glaze nibbles or fleabites around the mouth of the vase.

Four British art pottery grotesque spoon warmers, late 19th century comprising a Wardle and Co (Washington Works, Hanley) toad, circa 1890-95, modelled standing on three feet, in a light ochre or yellow glaze, impressed 'WARDLE ENGLAND', 16cm high; another two toads, modelled seated with red glaze, possibly Dunmore Pottery (Scotland), 10cm and 14cm high; and a Burmantofts frog, light green, impressed marks including number 1897, 14cm high (4)Condition:Wardle - One leg broken and re-stuck. Now a little bit unsteady on the three feet. Typical crazing to the glaze throughout.
