Silver mounted photograph frame, Charles Green & Co, Birmingham 1923, oak easel back, 32x21.5cm.Condition report:There are numerous kinks and dents in the frame outline. To the left hand side there is a 1cm line that appears to be a split but it doesn't feel like the metal is split at all. The top border has some very dark marks which may prove difficult to polish out. Hallmarks are readable but the definition is rubbed. Some of the pins are missing securing it to the backing. The backing itself is a little loose and one of the slides holding the backboard in place is missing, so it is all a little loose. The easel still works. The glass is chipped around the edging but the chips are obscured by the silver frame.

Clare WHITE (1903-1997) Church of holy apostles, agora, Athens c 1960s Watercolour, 38 x 51cm.The historic 10th century Church of Holy Apostles on the Ancient Agora of Athens is the main attraction in this absorbing painting by St Ives watercolourist Clare White. Clare White always painted from life, en plain air, and viewed the world from her own perspective – and from where ever she was sitting at her easel. The intricate detail of a beautiful, ruined column dominates the foreground in front of Clare here, and, figures, which she always found appealing in a scene, dot the landscape to animate the scene. From the collection of art historian and curator Andrew Pollard, the proprietor of the Clare White Gallery, who studied and exhibited Clare’s work 2002-2013. Andrew knew White and has been a passionate advocate for restoring the artist to her rightful place in Cornish art history. The works were purchased directly from the artist’s god daughter.
Clare WHITE (1903-1997) A row of gondolas, Venice Watercolour, 38 x 51cm.St Ives artist Clare White loved to travel and to paint. Across Europe and beyond, she would set up her easel in a hidden spot, take out her watercolours and paint in some of Europe’s most beautiful places,. This quiet painting focuses on a row of gondolas on the canals of Venice, waiting for customers to arrive. From the collection of art historian and curator Andrew Pollard, the proprietor of the Clare White Gallery, who studied and exhibited Clare’s work 2002-2013. Clare WHITE (1903-1997) Boys, Saint-Malo, Brittany Watercolour, initialled, 38 x 50cm.Painted in the 1950s / 60s, this characterful watercolour by St Ives artist Clare White shows a group of young men exiting a gate through the walls of the medieval town of Boys, Saint-Malo in Brittany. She captures the quiet, solid age of the walls and the swagger of the young men who look back at the artist as she works at her easel in the shade. Clare always painted from life and loved to include ordinary people, going about their day, in her engaging street scenes. She spoke fluent French, as well as Italian and German, and visited France regularly, to visit friends and paint. From the collection of art historian and curator Andrew Pollard, the proprietor of the Clare White Gallery, who studied and exhibited Clare’s work 2002-2013. Clare WHITE (1903-1997) Pliva waterfalls, Jajce, Bosnia Watercolour, 50 x 37.5cm. To verso there is a pencil sketch of The Minack Theatre, Cornwall. St Ives artist Clare White always painted from life ‘en plain air’ and must have been thrilled to set down her stool and get out her sketchbook, easel and watercolurs to capture this scene in Bosnia Herzegovina. The power of the Pliva waterfalls, with the fragile figures of people admiring them from the rocks below, and the solid and lovely town of Jajce above inspired Clare to create one of very few upright (portrait) paintings. Top to bottom, she captures the scudding clouds, silent towers and the calm of the blue water before it cascades over the falls.
