Seventeenth Century Scandal & Female Heiresses. The 1674 'Kidnapping' and Coerced Marriage of the Heiress Bridget Hyde (1662-1734; later Duchess of Leeds), an important contemporary transcript of legal documents, possibly an official court record, dated 1674-75, but presumably 1680, English, with some occasional legal Latin, scrivened by several distinct hands, ink manuscript on paper, marginal glosses, paginated, complete and collating: 935, [8]pp (tables), the whole illustrative of the case, i.e. the charge that Hyde's earlier marriage, aged 12, to her first-cousin John Emerton of Middle Temple in 1674 was still valid and that her coerced marriage, following her scandalous abduction by him, to Peregrine Osborne, then Viscount Dunblane (1659-1729; later 2nd Duke of Leeds), was bigamous (which the jury ruled, thus exacerbating the cause célèbre), resulting in Dunblane's father, then the Earl of Danby, being forced to buy off the Emertons to prevent further prosecution, the text with precis of witness depositions and evidence, including various aristocrats and members of the gentry, demonstrating not only Bridget's familial and social connections, - as well as Emerton's - but also her importance as a 'prize' in the contemporary marriage market, being both an heiress of land and capital (reputedly worth £100,000), in addition to its historic importance, the manuscript affords interesting insights into the conventions of a woman's roll and the extent of its influence in engagement and marriage in the later 17th c, and other pre-matrimonial customs, including the ring: ' Bridgett laying in her said Chamber called [...] to her saying Grace [Millington] come hither did you ever see my Ring showing [...] a Diaming Ring in fashion of a heart that was on her finger [...], contemporary blind-panelled vellum over boards, splat spine titled and indistinctly numbered in manuscript: Mr John Emerton's Case, folio (36.5 x 23.5cm) Provenance: By indirect descent from the Emerton family, via the Byron and later the Seymour families, at Thrumpton Hall, Nottinghamshire. This and similar cases, of what was becoming a familiar result of inheritance and the lack of a male heir, was topically satirised in Aphra Benn's drama The City-Heiress (1682).

LALIQUE: AN ART NOUVEAU GOLD RING, CIRCA 1900Designed as a tapered wide band etched with a series of dancing nymphs, signed Lalique, with maker's mark 'RL' for René Lalique, ring size QA very similar ring sold for US$12,000 at Christie's in New York, on April 12th 2005 (lot 273)The Art Nouveau movement flourished at the turn of the twentieth century, underpinning a period of creativity and artistic innovation across all fields of design. Artists, inspired by and drawing heavily on forms of the natural world, embraced new, fluid, organic and graceful lines within their work. The Art Nouveau style was broadcasted to a global audience at the 1900 Paris Exposition with René Lalique, hailed as the “Master of Art Nouveau Jewellery,” making his international debut.Japanese art, with its simplicity of form, deference to the natural world, and use of colours, lent itself well as a source of inspiration for Art Nouveau jewellers. A preference for delicate pastel hues led them to experiment with semiprecious stones like amethyst, agate, softly curved and shimmering opal, pearl and moonstone. The gentle glow of these stones embedded a sense of finely crafted dynamism and mystery in Art Nouveau jewellery that emphasised its unique aesthetic as having pioneered a language of design distinct from that of mainstream jewellery at the time. Eugène Gaillard, a designer particularly inspired by exotic art forms, specialised in the technique of “plaque de cuisson” and worked often with horn, enamel, opal and coloured stones. The Art Nouveau movement coincided with a period of significant social change and female empowerment. This shift is reflected in the jewellery of the time, which often featured a highly symbolic female form as its central motif. That symbolism was intwined with a sort of mystic femininity, with female forms depicted as a spirits of nature, goddesses, nymphs and fairies. Lalique drew inspiration from the natural world and the place of man within in it, with his ethereal designs evoking an engagement with these motifs and themes of amorous liberation; delicate orchids, iridescent dragonflies, sinuous snakes, and mysterious profiles of women intertwined with the flora and fauna appear frequently in his work. His designs reflect these themes of feminine liberation and fantasy, which can be seen especially in his designs in which the figures of nymphs and spirits are raised in relief as though their liberation is symbolically linked to their physicality.Lalique’s designs envisioned jewellery as a point of focus rather than a decoration for its wearer. His pieces were often large, bold, and sculptural – informed by his foundational knowledge of traditional techniques such as “plique-a-jour” enamelling, and blended with the distinct, dynamic aesthetic he pioneered. The iconic “Femme Libellule” (dragonfly-woman) brooch was de signed by Lalique in 1882, and perfectly encapsulates his vision. The piece depicts a nude woman as its central motif, with the figure emerging out of a dragonfly, seemingly frozen in a process of metamorphosis. This brooch, evoking a sense of rarified femininity, was worn by Sarah Bernhardt, a French actress and follower of Lalique’s career, at the height of her fame. After taking over the workshop of a Parisian jeweller, Lalique worked independently for private clients such as Bernhardt, as well as opera stars and aristocrats, whose patronage ensured his lasting legacy. The timeless and global appeal of Lalique’s designs remains, with his pieces featuring in the prestigious collections of The Metropolitan Museum of New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.  Condition Report: Normal signs of wear, commensurate with ageTotal gross weight approx. 13.9g

John Morillyon Wilson served as a Midshipman in the Navy for nearly six years. He was employed on the coast of Ireland during the Rebellion in 1798, as well as in the expedition to the Helder in 1799 and Egypt in 1801, where he received a medal from the Captain Pasha for having saved the lives of a boat’s crew belonging to a Turkish man-of-war. He received three wounds whilst as a Midshipman, the last being a severe wound to the head causing total deafness, in consequence of which he was invalided, and quitted the Navy in 1803. His health being restored, Wilson joined the 40th Foot in 1804, before moving to the 63rd Foot in January 1807. Later that year he was a Captain in the 1st Foot (Royals), serving with the 3rd Battalion at Walcheren in 1809, where he was again wounded twice leading the grenadier company during the assault on Flushing. In 1810, he was brought before court martial for using language ‘subversive to discipline, and disrespectful to the character of Colonel Barnes,’ his commanding officer. Although acquitted of conduct unbecoming of a gentlemen, he was found guilty of using language that was disrespectful and sentenced to a public reprimand. He afterwards served in the Peninsula, and was in the battles of Busaco, the retreat to the lines of Torres Vedras, and at the actions of Pombal, Redinha, Condeixa, Casal Nova, Foz d’Arouce, and Sabugal, the blockade of Almeida, and battle of Fuentes D’Onor. In 1812 he joined the 2nd Battalion Royals in Canada, and was in the attack made on Sackett’s Harbour and Great Sodus, where he received a severe bayonet wound. He was also in the actions at Fort Niagara, Black Rock, Buffalo, and the battle of Chippewa. The battle of Chippewa was the first major engagement between Major-General Jacob Brown’s Left Division of the United States Army and the Right Division of Upper Canada led by Major-General Phineas Riall. Both commanders committed a brigade onto the plain of Chippewa during the afternoon of 5 July 1814. The three British units included the 1/1st Foot, 1/8th Foot and 100th Foot. The 1st Foot formed the centre of the British line, and its pre-battle reported strength was 500 all ranks under Lieutenant-Colonel John Gordon. Heavily engaged during the battle, the Royals suffered one officer and 77 other ranks killed, and 8 officers and 144 other ranks wounded. Two officers were taken prisoner and 77 soldiers were reported as missing. Captain John Morillyon Wilson was one of the two severely wounded officers that were taken prisoner. He had been wounded seven times and left for dead on the battlefield. A native armed with a knife then attacked him, but Wilson killed his attacker and was then kept alive by a native woman from a nearby village before being taken prisoner. He was exchanged in February 1815. During his career in the two professions he received 13 wounds, and it is said carried two balls lodged in his body to the grave. The Brevet rank of Major, and that of Lieutenant Colonel, was conferred on him for his conduct at Buffalo and Chippewa. He was placed on half pay in 1822, promoted Colonel in January 1837, and created a Companion of the Bath on 19 July 1838. Colonel Wilson was Gentleman Usher of the Privy Chamber for nearly 20 years to Queen Adelaide. He was appointed Adjutant of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea on 16 November 1822, and Major of the same establishment on 14 July 1855, which position he held until his death there in 1868.
