[BATTLE OF BRITAIN]: CROWLEY-MILLING DENIS (1919-1996) British Air Marshal, a fighter pilot of the RAF during World War II who participated in the Battle of Britain. A significant D.S., D. Crowley-Milling P/O, two pages, folio, n.p., 30th August 1940. The partially printed document, completed entirely in Crowley-Milling's hand, is a Combat Report (RAF Form 1151, marked Secret) providing details of the pilot’s first aerial victory during the Battle of Britain, the narrative stating, in part, 'While patrolling in vic over North Weald enemy sighted......stepped up from 12,000 to 18,000 ft. attacked middle section of 110's, two broke off which were attacked by Red leader & Red 2, leaving HE 111 K open to self which I attacked astern giving 5 secs burst. E.A. made no evasive tactics.....starboard engine of E.A. started to smoke then started to dive to ground.....P/O Hart confirms seeing my HE 111 K going down in flames'. One file hole to the upper left corner, a very small, minor tear to the right edge and with some extremely minimal creasing, VG
[BATTLE OF BRITAIN]: KENT JOHN A. (1914-1985) Canadian Group Captain, a flying ace with the Royal Air Force during World War II who participated in the Battle of Britain. An exceptional T.L.S., John Kent, one page, 8vo, Hartley Witney, Hampshire, 24th June 1969, to Mr. Smith, with the blue printed badge of the RAF at the head. Kent thanks his correspondent for their letter and continues to provide an account of his most anxious moment during World War II, in part, 'It took place over the Thames Estuary on September 23rd 1940 while with 303 Polish Squadron. I had been attacked by a Bf 109 and managed to lose the enemy aircraft by going into cloud base. When I emerged I came out above & behind him. I came down and caught him by surprise racking the whole fuselage with a long burst. I then chased him out over the Channel with smoke pouring from his engine. As we neared Calais I flew alongside of him and looked the pilot in the eye, a very young German with blond hair who looked terrified. This is war I thought and if I let him go he will no doubt go on to kill more of our boys. I then turned and came back in a 60 deg with a short deflection burst into the top of his cockpit, where upon the 109 flipped over and went down into the sea. I can still see that young face today'. A letter of highly emotive content. VG
[BATTLE OF BRITAIN]: CZERWINSKI TADEUSZ: (1910-1942) Polish fighter pilot with the RAF during World War II who participated in the Battle of Britain. Portion of a manuscript D.S., Czerwinski, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p., n.d. The document originally formed part of a Combat Report, the manuscript text, in Polish, stating, in part, 'at 12 noon we attacked the front of the enemy's formation, having an altitude and speed advantage.....I fired 2 short series......I didn't see the impact of my attack, as I went immediately down to the left. Pulling the plane back up again, I saw a single Do 17 ahead......I attacked it from the rear, firing three rounds......the E/A's left engine caught on fire I went a bit left and saw the enemy's plane diving. Then our other three planes attacked the same target'. Autographs of Czerwinski are extremely rare in any form as a result of the pilot being killed in action on 22nd August 1942. VG
AIRSHIPS: Small selection of three signed photographs comprsing a postcard photograph depicting a Zeppelin airship in flames on 17th October 1913, signed to the verso by four members of the crew of the Hindenburg airship who survived the disaster that occurred at Lakehurst, New Jersey, on 6th May 1937 comprising Eugen Bentele (1909-2003; chief mechanic), Theodor Ritter (1913-2009; trainee engine mechanic), Fred Grozinger (1916-2002; cook) & Walter Muller (1908-2003; Flight officer) and also signed by John Lust, a crew member of the USS Akron, who fatefully avoided the flight of the airship that resulted in disaster on 3rd April 1933; a signed 5 x 7 photograph by Tom Applegate, a civilian ground crew member at the time of the Hindenburg disaster, the image depicting the airship in flames, signed in black ink to the lower white border; and a signed 10 x 8 photograph by Margherita Thielke, an eyewitness to the Hindenburg disaster, the image depicting the airship crashing to the ground in flames, signed in black ink to the image by Thielke, further adding a few words and the date of the disaster in her hand beneath her signature. ALCOCK JOHN: (1892-1919) English pilot, a Captain with the Royal Naval Air Service and Royal Air Force who, with navigator Arthur Whitten Brown, completed the first successful non-stop transatlantic flight, June 1919. An extremely rare A.L.S., Jack (and also 'signed' Capt. J. Alcock in the address panel at the head), two pages (written to the first and third sides of the feint ruled bifolium), Kedos, Ouchak, Turkey, 11th September n.y. (1918), to Captain S. H. Gaskell ('Dear Old Buster'). Alcock writes from the Turkish Prisoner of War camp where he was being held and acknoweldges receipt of his friend's letter ('after all these long months of waiting'), further stating 'Well old bean I was delighted to hear of the successes of my machine, as regards its unfortunate end, I was very relieved to hear that it was no fault of the machine but of some "B" "F" who I should like to meet. Starbuck seems to have been nuts on her, I wish he had been able to have done a little work with it. Hick & Piper arrived here last May & told me of her first trials which bucked me up a lot. Do you happen to know what the Admiralty are doing about her? Well old dear you might let me have news of the R.A.F. re rank, pay & uniform etc. Do you happen to know if I was promoted to Flt. Com. about March or later? as I had a letter from old Ashford (e) dated March 1st congratulating me on my promotion & honour. Before I forget, let me congratulate you on your escape from being my shipmate on the last stunt, also on your Greek honour (what do you call it). I was very surprised at the few they dished out'. Alcock concludes his letter in reasonably high-spirits given his situation, although also demonstrates a hint of the loneliness he must have been experiencing, 'Your sister Violet kindly wrote me a long letter which I received a few days ago. I hope she carries on with the good work for we simply live for the mail. Well old boy, look after yourself & give seaplanes a trial, you will be better off. Love from the "Boys" to all the "Boys" & tell them to write. Send lots of snaps!'. With address panel in Alcock's hand to the final page. Autograph letters of Alcock are extremely rare owing to his tragically early death at the age of 27 following an air crash. Some very light, minimal age wear, about VGOn 30th September 1917 Alcock was piloting a Handley Page bomber on a raid against the Turkish capital Constantinople, when one engine failed. The aircraft managed to limp on for more than 100 kilometres before the other engine quit and it had to be ditched in the sea near Suvla Bay. Alcock and his two crew members swam for about an hour to reach the Ottoman army-held shore, only to be promptly captured. This ended Alcock’s participation in World War I and he spent the next fourteen months as a prisoner of war in Turkey. He was finally released on the Armistice of 11th November 1918, exactly two months to the day after the present letter was written.Alcock was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross 'For the great skill, judgment and dash displayed by him off Moudros.....in a successful attack on three enemy seaplanes, two of which were brought down in the sea', which had occurred earlier on the same fateful day of 30th September 1917.
[BATTLE OF BRITAIN]: CLOWES ARTHUR (1912-1949) British Squadron Leader, a fighter pilot and flying ace (credited with at least 10 victories) of the RAF during World War II who participated in the Battle of Britain. Portion of a D.S., A V Clowes, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p., n.d. (30th August 1940). The document was signed by Clowes whilst serving with No. 1 Squadron and originally formed part of a Combat Report, the typed text stating, in part, 'I sighted enemy.....15 leading Bombers fairly close at 11,000 ft. with twenty to thirty stragglers up to 15,000 ft and a larger number of ME 110's (50 to 60) up to 15, to 25,000 ft in no standard formation. I looped up to one ME 110 and gave him a short burst which caused the starboard engine to omit a strong streak of white smoke. I then made an astern attack on three HE 111's at 12,000 ft. The first HE 111 omitted smoke and some flames......My range in each attack was about 250 yds and bursts about two seconds each'. Autographs of Clowes are rare as a result of his death from liver cancer at the young age of 37. Some very light, extremely minor creasing, VG
