Italy, ca. 19th century CE. This is an etching -- done using an acid called a "mordant" -- depicting two saints on the back of magnificent horses. Greek writing around their heads declares them to be Saints Theodore of Amasea (always shown in military dress when on horseback) and Theodore Stratelates, who is also known as a warrior saint. The artwork of this piece is clear and had many interesting details that will draw the eye over and over again. Size: 14.5" W x 18.5" H (36.8 cm x 47 cm). Provenance: Ex. M. Reiniger collection, Chicago, IL Condition: Very slight watermarks on the paper; in modern frame.
