A GOOD PAIR OF 18TH CENTURY ENGLISH LEAD FIGURES attributed to JOHN CHEERE (1700-1787), of a man and woman holding a lamb in her arms and a flower, the man standing cross legged, both on square bases. 4ft 3ins high. Note: John Cheere ran a thriving business for 50 years at Hyde Park Corner and dominated the market for his high quality lead figures during the 1740's and 1750's. His parents John and Mary Cheere were of French Huguenot origin.

James H. Cookson (British, 1883-1947) Peshawar India, colourful study of a torrid day, with two figures standing on a dirt path flanked by verdant vegetation, signed and dated 1916, framed and mounted under glass, 12 x 17 cm James Cookson was born in Kendal in 1883 and demonstrated early talent as a painter, winning the National Medal for Success in Art. During the First World War he saw service with the British Army on the North-West Frontier, and made two books of paintings and drawings, recording people and places in Northern India and Afghanistan. Following the war he found employment as a cabinet maker to Simpson's of Kendal, the renowned Arts and Crafts company, and during his time there he carried out commissions for the RMS Titanic and for Blackwell; the Arts and Crafts house at Bowness-on-Windermere.
