BOWERY AT MIDNIGHTFrench Grande (46.5" x 63")Fine+ Folded; Artwork by Vincent Cristellys Monogram, 1947The French Grande poster for "Bowery at Midnight" is a standout piece. It depicts the story of a psychiatrist, played by Lugosi, who moonlights as a criminal mastermind, using his soup kitchen to recruit gang members. A notable henchman in the tale is a deranged doctor who revives the corpses of Lugosi's victims. This poster, with its vivid blues and greens, encapsulates the film's oddity far better than the American version, making it a unique addition to Lugosi's Monogram film series. The poster, though folded, exhibits only minor fold marks, cross fold wear, and edge wear, which includes chipping and small tears. There is also slight sporadic separation in the upper right area and some faint, scattered crimping. Apart from these issues, the poster remains in excellent condition.Bela Lugosi was on Universal's radar when casting the film version of the play Dracula, but the studio initially wanted a more bankable actor. However, Lugosi was chosen primarily because he would work cheaply (he was reportedly paid $500 per week for seven weeks of work, less than virtually every other cast member. The film, released in 1931, made him a star virtually overnight and the undisputed King of Universal Monsters (that is until Boris Karloff debuted in Frankenstein later that year). Lugosi's charisma as Stoker's vampire was undeniable, but his halting and heavily accented English kept him from other plum roles, forcing him to ultimately accept parts in "poverty row" pictures, like Bowery at Midnight, released by Monogram Pictures. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, September 12th. THE EVIL DEADOne Sheet (27" x 41"); Silk Screen Alternate Poster Signed by Bruce Campbell and Director Sam Raimi (JSA COA)Very Fine- Folded; Artwork by Mike Ditz New Line, 1983This might be the most significant modern horror poster in existence! This special poster was printed exclusively to promote the first-ever 16mm screenings of "Evil Dead" at select theaters in 1980. This poster was created before the film was distributed nationwide in 1981. The poster is printed on a thicker paper stock using a silk screen. It features the iconic artwork by Mike Ditz and the film's original title, "Evil Dead." This is a pre-wide release poster from one of the independent or film festival screenings that Evil Dead underwent before its wide release by New Line Cinema. Notably, this poster bears the New Line logo, indicating it was likely used after the film's acquisition for distribution in early January 1983 but before its wide release in mid-April 1983. Given the few screenings during that period, this poster probably originates from one of two New York shows in May (as indicated by a Variety ad featuring the same artwork). Additionally, it's worth noting that the title is simply "Evil Dead," the name used before New Line rebranded it to "The Evil Dead" and switched to the now-iconic hand-art by M. Skilsky. The scarcity of this early, pre-wide release poster is truly remarkable! Signed by Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi (Dallas Fort Worth, TX) in 2019. From a Private Collector. This item stands as a unique piece in modern cinema. It is an exceptionally rare release poster of the horror classic, produced by Renaissance Pictures. The poster shows typical signs of wear, such as a small one-inch tear at the bottom center and a minor v-shaped crease near the lower right corner. On the back, "Evil Dead" is written in pencil.Sam Raimi's controversial and hugely successful debut: a low-budget but hugely inventive horror romp, in which five students - including Bruce Campbell's Ash Williams - accidentally unleash a malevolent supernatural force while staying at a remote cabin in the woods.
